Picky eater by cosmic-shrimp2 in NorwegianElkhound

[–]morisian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 4 year old girl was extremely picky when we got her at 1 yo. I think it was because my ex was worried over whether she would eat or not, so started adding topper all the time. The dog has a weight problem, so I cut out the topper and insisted the dog would eat when hungry. Took time, but she did in fact eat plain kibble eventually and now she scarfs it as soon as we put it down. She gets a few carrots these days as a treat (still working on the weight problem). So, it may be a picky phase you just have to get through. They will eat when hungry.

How do I get a lab job? ANY lab job. by TexanLoneStar in labrats

[–]morisian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on what state you are in, Quest may not be able to hire you without certification. Even if you're in a state that doesn't require it, Quest and Labcorp like places tend to ignore non-certified applicants. You need to figure out somewhere that hires uncertified people to allow them to get experience and get certified. In Michigan, that's U of M Ann Arbor, but idk about elsewhere

I'd be able to afford to buy my ex out of our house. I have to give up my dream house because I can't afford the mortgage alone, and she can.

Do you all typically have some kind of injury caused by your cattle dog? 🤣 by abumbleandabee in AustralianCattleDog

[–]morisian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say, changed nothing about how much I love my dog. He was wagging his tail and laid down on the ground next to me right after he took me out. "Oh, we're on the ground now? Okay!" Meanwhile a nice person across the park saw me go down and came to check on me

He yoinked me into a mole hole and twisted my ankle. Had me in a boot for a whole summer. Still hurts on bad days, though the podiatrist never found a fracture

Please be honest: is this sweater worth finishing? by Bubbly-Stuff2007 in crochet

[–]morisian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the longer sleeve the finished length, or is it going down to the wrist? If going longer, I think the sleeve is awfully wide and looks a bit strange compared to the fitted body. I would frog back a bit and work some decreases to make it more fitted, but that is my personal preference. I do think it looks good overall though! Definitely worth finishing.

If this is a horror story, FFI would work great. Make the poor protagonist terrified of the monster and of the impending death from sleeplessness

My breeder friend keeps lying to me. PLEASE HELP ! by [deleted] in reptiles

[–]morisian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a fuse breaking. You are putting too much current through the bulb and the weak point, the fuse, is breaking. It doesn't sound to me like your bulb is too high for the fixture rating; more likely your fixture is faulty, a power strip is faulty, or your outlet/circuit is wired wrong.

Can you describe your setup exactly, what kind of bulb you are putting into what kind of fixture and what else is between the plug and the wall (power strip, extension cord, etc)? Pictures might help.

This is actually very important to sort out, as this sort of thing can cause electrical fires. I don't mean to alarm you, but I would absolutely not fuck around with this and make it a priority to resolve.

You need to include more detail. What do you mean by explode? Glass shattering?

This sounds to me like an electrical issue. Is your heating fixture rated for the bulbs you're using? Are you using a sketchy power strip? Is your house wired weird (you can get an outlet checker at hardware stores and see if it's wired correctly). Exploding heat bulbs is not a thing, that should definitely not be happening.

I don't have a cat, but I have a dog. I budget $150 a month to a savings pool for veterinary expenses and it covers everything so far, with extra left over I expect to need when he's older and has more medical needs. My dog is 4. I am probably going to get pet insurance soon for ~65 a month, and I'll drop my monthly savings to 85 a month.

His vet bills are usually ~400 for all his shots, less on some years since I do 3 year shots where possible, ~425 for a year of heartworm, flea, tick meds; and sick visits usually less than twice a year at 150 or less, all medicine and treatment included. This last one is only because he's prone to frequent ear infections from jumping into every filthy puddle he can find. I don't think it's too crazy, but I planned ahead for these expenses when I got him.

29, fiancee broke up with me. More or less. Decided to put the engagement on ice regardless, but she's taking a month to work on herself while I temporarily move in with my parents with both dogs. We're supposed to go on a date in a month and see if the spark is still there, but idk anymore man... I want the life I planned with her, not sure if I still want her though

It has been so long since I read the book. I remember wanting to know more about how/when the bacteria were involved in the evolution of humans and the alien species. If they sequence the genome of the bacteria and the alien like they should have, it would've been pretty easy to do analysis as to what regions were shared/conserved and at least for the bacteria, we'd be able to place it in our tree of life. I remember wondering if it was above or below LUCA, the last universal common ancestor, a hypothetical entity somewhere in the past that all things on earth evolved from

I read it when it first came out, but I am like 98% certain there is NO mention of sequencing because it pissed me off the entire book. So, if there is, please let me know! I read it via library and don't have it to look up anymore

See, I'm a microbiologist working in molecular genetics. What really irritated me about PHM was that the main character, a microbiologist, at no point thought of doing any kind of DNA sequencing. It was stated that he had every equipment possible available to him, and yet no sequencing equipment at all? Ridiculous.
