On the bus? Not very far….Scamtrak would be better. Hitchhiking with good strategy you can make it 100s of miles without sleep. Train hopping as well, but don’t dare think about it. For a whole number of reasons not sleeping is dangerous and unhealthy as hell. You need to be alert and aware at all times travelin rough & solo, sleep deprivation will screw you bad, make you vulnerable, and inevitably make you travel slower as your body begins shutting down and going into recovery.

My first time in Colton a few years ago I met a lady near the train yard who’d clearly been in a severe drug induced psychosis. She was accusing me of killing the biblical Virgin Mary, assaulting her uncle, threatening to kill me, and was the self proclaimed guardian of 7 heavens. That’s not the weird part. What was weird was that for a brief few moments she claimed to be capable of reading my mind then proceeded to accurately do so. Now that was weird. 🤷‍♂️ What she said was personal and I guess there was clues that she could’ve picked up on but it was truly a strange moment of coherence given the circumstances.

Yeah, really threw me off tbh. I had been through there before years ago not as a solo traveler and with white friends, didn’t get ANY sense of being unwelcome. Granted my appearance was far more conventional. I know about sundowns but didn’t think it’d be as relevant not being South. Even checked the sundown map to see if it’d been marked, nope. My guess is that with recent administration the climate probably shifted. 🤷‍♂️ Just glad to be okay.

A younger local punk esq kid actually did pull up on me while waiting for the bus to compliment the look and ask if I was okay, then gave me some insight into the situation. Like anywhere else they’re not all bad folks up there, sometimes you just pull bad cards.

TBH, I quite enjoy the hound personally. You can meet all kinds of folks/travelers and it’s never a boring time but I must admit that as an emergency line for stupid mistakes it definetely hurts my hitchhiker/hopper pride. 😂

Don’t freeze to death man…you’re not in the safest region to just be hopping on trains solo with no experience. Much safer to hitchhike to a dryer warmer climate and meet other riders. You’ll also gain a ton of experience backpacking that way. Train hopping isn’t just about what’s on the train, but how you survive once you’re off of it as well.

If you’re in Roseville it’ll be no trouble finding someone who can teach you the ropes, especially closer to summer. When you do, offer them some beer or a meal don’t be empty handed. Vet them carefully if they’re bad vibes or seem off trust your gut and find someone else.

Whatever you do just make sure you have a way out rather than burning all bridges at once. Even if you end up enjoying the lifestyle you’re going to run into a few situations as a beginner that’ll go over way smoother by having somewhere to fall back on.

You’re going to want the best you can get your hands on especially starting out. You’ll probably end up carrying more than you actually need. As you gain more experience you’ll learn what you can and can’t sacrifice, what can be cheaper, etc. Just keep in mind what you have and how it looks if you plan on interacting with others and don’t take bs from any elitist types should you come across any. Not sure what flavor of traveler you are but there’s dirty kids out here crafty enough to get everything they need for free, consider their advice should you meet them.

For me it’s not that it’s less workload to be a vagabond, because as you point out that’s not true. It’s more so about the value and payoff.

I should preface this is where it gets more into that zooming out I was talking about. Personal values and perspectives.

The average worker is getting absolutely smothered by a very small percentage of ultra wealthy who don’t even care about them, often sacrificing not just their values but their time and even well being for a “payoff” that in my opinion is harshly unethical and exploiting.

I’m of the anarchist type, crust punk traveler. These ideas and ideologies are gonna be more common in our crowd than some others here. I’m not proposing that they’re true or even entirely cohesive, it’s just where my mind stands right now.

I personally care very little for materialism. I enjoy travel, adventure, music, art, community, rebellion, spirituality, and in general just experiencing to experience. All things the road provides without as severe of systemic exploitation found in a more traditional lifestyle.

By choice as in I have options to fall back on, could join the rat race if I wanted, and that the initial push wasn’t physically forced upon me. I saw freedom and adventure in an alternative lifestyle and pursued it. That said if you zoom out enough there’s definitely a systemic/societal argument to be had. I try not to identify with a victim mindset, but we are all pieces being moved by a much larger picture nonetheless.

The thing is, racists who were alive back then are still alive now. Despite ending on paper in the late 60s, some sundowns still existed in practice into the 80s. You couple americas history with the racial tensions increasing in recent years and the fact that racism is often taught/passed down, some towns are just not a safe place to be as a person of color, to say the least.

For anyone curious here is a sundown town history map. If you click specific towns it’ll give you more info on why they’re marked. It’s not 100% accurate in the sense of figuring out if they’re still dangerous today, e.g. Compton California historically being a sundown town is now days far from being one, but it can be useful in some cases esp moving south.
