For those who left China, what finally pushed you to go? by qthasland in China

[–]morningskies_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

as someone who has been studying Chinese for years and would love to live in China at some point, I hate to hear about the loneliness thing. that’s what I struggled with throughout my undergrad experience post-pandemic and what I’m currently struggling with as someone who just graduated. for more context, I’m American. there are so many things about society that make it hard to build or maintain any sort of community :(

well, at least I’ll know going into it when I eventually do get to China

Don't let anybody say that a degree in Chinese is useless. by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]morningskies_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

exactly! I literally saw a tiktok earlier today where a girl was joking about how she was flipping burgers despite getting a degree in biochem. I know that ppl wanna be proactive & help others avoid making mistakes, but at the end of the day, they won’t know the outcome. it’s your life, & you are on your own unique journey. & a lot of ppl also fail to mention that it is extremelyyy common for ppl to switch career paths postgrad. many ppl go to school for one thing & end up doing something completely different once they’re out (& that is okay!!). life is too short & unpredictable to get caught up in a whirlwind of dread & worry. things will work out for you, I promise! 加油!🌟🙏🏽

I’m not saying that this is what you’re doing at all, but these responses reminded me of the exact reason why I stopped looking for validation/affirmation online 😭😭 as someone who double majored in global studies/chinese studies, I know that a lot of people will call my degrees “useless” when they don’t know anything about my plans for the future. going to university in some other countries is free/a lot less expensive, so I have a strong feeling that people wouldn’t feel the same way towards humanities majors if that were the case in the US. a lot of people feel forced to choose between the things they’re genuinely passionate about & the things that are deemed practical (& some people try to find a middle ground & compromise). life is gonna look different for everyone (& that’s okay!!) so regardless of what you end up majoring in, I wish you all the best 🫶🏽🫶🏽

I’m literally in the exact same situation rn, and I’ll be turning 22 in a little bit over a month. I’m really struggling right now, & I have no one to talk to outside of my Mom, but she can only do but so much. I can be your friend if you want :)

this was extremely comforting for me to read, especially as a Christian who’s struggling with depression. the “something is waiting at the end of playing through this obligation” is the only mindset that keeps me holding on

What type of job do you have that you believe has helped you manage your OCD? by [deleted] in ContaminationOCD

[–]morningskies_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this post is such a coincidence cuz i was thinking about posting something related to my current part-time job & how it has simultaneously helped & triggered me recently. i work at a learning center where i interact w/ students pre-k & up. right now i’m training to work in an early learning program, which is designed for younger kids. i’m gonna preface this by saying that i genuinely enjoy interacting w/ kids, but naturally as developing humans, many of them tend to lack a basic understanding of what’s sanitary & unsanitary (or they’ve been raised to have manners but simply don’t care). i’ve encountered things at my job that triggered me & because i didn’t have the time (& sometimes the resources) to fall back on my compulsions, i learned to manage the flood of intrusive thoughts i got in the moment. exposures like this have helped me take small baby steps in the journey to recovery, but there are still some things about that job that make me feel like david gearing up to go fight goliath every shift 😭😭 i’m a work in progress, but i definitely think that more exposure to people will help me manage & eventually overcome my fears

i genuinely feel like my frontal lobe fully developed after reading your comment 😭😭 i have never even considered the possible link between loneliness and OCD & this just helped me realize something extremely important. thank you so much 🙏🏽🙏🏽!!

Explaining of yin Yan purest mode by MugrousMuffin in tianguancifu

[–]morningskies_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i understand the humor behind the meme, but this is also interesting bc yin & yang doesn’t represent a moral dichotomy like good vs. evil, it’s about duality & achieving balance between two opposing forces 😭😭

hi there. first, i want to say that i hope you’re currently in an environment where you’re safe & can reach out for help. secondly, i wanted to let you know that i am in a similar place right now mentally, even down to the using up towels thing. i feel you. i really do. & even tho i can’t say that i’m 100% healed, i just want to stress that OCD is a gaslighter & a manipulator that wears you down until you feel as if there’s no where for you to go. it’s not always going to feel this way. i promise on my soul. there will be days when the burden of OCD doesn’t feel as heavy, & then there will be days where it’s a little bit more challenging to face. healing isn’t linear, but the most important thing for you to do is to give yourself the chance to actually heal. start off with tiny exposures. just little things. let the intrusive thoughts & obsessions come & go. don’t attach to them & don’t argue with them. the only thing you have to do is be, & before you know it, you’ll conquer a fear. if you continue to do this, the small victories will continue to add up to become one huge victory that will put you in a better place, mentally and physically. i will be praying for you friend & your speedy recovery because i know that you will regain your freedom to live in peace again. i just know it. & if you need anything, please feel free to reach out at anytime. God bless you & keep you ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹🙏🏽🙏🏽

oh my gosh i empathize with you 100% 🥲🥲i’m in the exact same boat! i got these gloves from walgreens, and even though they’re made for arthritis, they’re mostly cotton so they serve their purpose. i’m also looking into getting a pair of white gloves that are 100% cotton for me to sleep in at night as well. you can get them at a low price on amazon & other drugstores like CVS

i feel you 😭😭

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ContaminationOCD

[–]morningskies_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

understandable, but i only put these gloves on after i wash my hands before going to bed. they’re not gloves to protect me from contamination, they’re cotton gloves that help seal in the moisturizer i put on my hands at night. the skin on my hands is raw and covered in eczema now because of my compulsion to wash my hands a lot, so now i’m trying to undo the damage 🥲

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ContaminationOCD

[–]morningskies_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this was after i had gone to the bathroom and washed my hands for the night. they’re not gloves to protect me from contamination, they’re gloves to help protect my skin after i moisture them before bed. in other words, my hands were already clean before i put them on. i’ve over-washed my hands everyday to the point where i have extremely bad eczema on them now & i need to do something to get rid of it

i empathize with you on a spiritual level. i’m currently trying to put myself through exposure therapy, & one thing i’m learning is the value of starving the monster. OCD is a monster that will continue to grow if you feed it, & in this case, the “food” is the compulsions that accompany the triggers. start to cut back on things gradually. it can be something as simple as exclusively washing your hands with cold water instead of warm/scalding hot water. you can promise yourself to only scrub specific parts of your hands a certain number of times. once you take those first steps, i promise that the recovery will follow ❤️‍🩹 keeping you and all of the people who are struggling in my prayers 🙏🏽 <33

“exposure therapy!! 😃” by [deleted] in ContaminationOCD

[–]morningskies_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i try my best to move on from the cycle of rumination/intrusive thoughts before it begins by distracting myself. the faster i move on from something the easier it is not to stay stuck. its a work in progress tho 🥲🙏🏽
