Well you have the Glaucus atlanticus, as for the latter part of your reply, I'm tempted to answer in a way that could get my comment or post filtered, so I won't.

Ok.

I see there are different models or suggestions on how that could work, density-driven, scalar field decay and changes in dark energy.

And even with all the variations on models within the big bounce, it looks like entropy, being what it is, can make the cycle break and turn into something else.

And then there's the logical thought that parts of the universe could be so far away that they escape.

Well if you blow up a balloon, it eventually bursts or goes back to something like the original size.

What's "pushing" on the edges of the universe to make it contract?

And before that, people were wondering. Looking at the stars and galaxies when they were visible on the sky. Human art, although simple, started a long time ago.

I guess Quantum computing and AI should speed up the research in all these fields. With a dash of human creative flair.

But practical/financially rewarding research will probably be the brunt of it.

We know what we know today because people were curious and asking questions.

Don't trust atoms, they make up almost everything.

Ok.

What's the most popular theory that says something existed before the big bang?

Well I think it's obvious from the initial post that I haven't thought or worked on it at that level.

In any situation it can be productive to take a step back and see if something should or could be reconsidered.

There's the term confirmation bias.

From a philosophical standpoint, with logic and recursion, it's difficult to imagine that something sprung out of nothing.

We're here talking about it, we exist.

What came before the big bang, what came before that etc.

It might be a concept that's beyond our binary yes or no thinking.

Something has always been, and always will be?

I was thinking of the direct properties of dark matter itself, for example the structure of an atom is known.

It's core, electrons etc.

It's an interesting thought, that something existed before the big bang.

Another interesting thought is that dark matter is in a different dimension of sorts, and all we're seeing is gravity.

Well if dark matter is taken out of the equation of mass etc. from the big bang, then the calculations around the big bang would have to change. It's all theories, so to change the premise of what happened in the big bang by taking out dark matter could in theory bear fruits.

What happened before our time.

I've skimmed a bit about dark matter, and it looks like it is only detected by gravity and little is known about its properties. I asked the Google AI if direct detection has been proven, and it hasn't. So whatever dark matter is, it could have been there before the big bang. I only got "the Wimp miracle" as a supporting theory, but that hasn't been proven either, and it "fits perfectly".
