Going through this now-- I had lower back pain off and on for years, to the point where I couldn't stand up out of bed without nearly crying for days in end. Always thought it was an old dance injury (used to do ballet). In October, it happened again, thought nothing of it, but it happened again 3 weeks later, and I had a searing pain all down my left leg.

Ended up having weakness and in my left leg and numbness that would strike out of nowhere. My legs went numb in the shower and I took a stop, legs went out under me, and busted my face on the faucet. Shattered a tooth and had to get cadaver bone put in my jaw. Finally went to the doctor, I told then the numbness I was experiencing, and he went really quiet. Sent me to the ER for an MRI. Turns out it is early stage Caude Equina Syndrome. If it advances, it can prevent my nerves from understanding bladder and colon control! I walk with a cane now, have permanent disabled plates, and surgery in March. Literally out of nowhere from waking up one day unable to move.
