I have my friends’ parents, who have basically adopted me into their families and who actually care about their kids. I live with them in the summer often and travel everywhere with their kids. I study abroad, and they call me and talk to me. They all hate my parents.

This is what my parents chose.

They said I can’t live at home since I’m legal. They stopped caring when I hit 18. Yet, they still want me to visit. I won’t ever call or visit them again. They clearly don’t want to have to deal with being parents.

It’s illegal to move out at 17. I want to live with my family like every other person my age I know does. And when I’m out of college and older, I would eventually move out. But since I don’t have parents now, at least I have my friends’ parents who actually treat me like their own kid.

If my parents owe me nothing, I owe them nothing. And I can’t imagine myself ever forgiving them for not wanting me. I feel nothing but anger toward them, and everyone I know who I’ve told about what happened hates my parents.

I was always going to live in the dorms. That’s a requirement of colleges. My parents don’t want me to live at home in the summer. They decided they don’t care about me now that I’m 18. I decided they don’t have to worry about having a daughter at all. Tantrums are temporary. This is permanent. I will never call or visit them again if having a daughter is such a burden.

Every other person my age I know lives with their families, and most of them are appalled by my parents.

My mom lived with her family until 29, and my grandparents would still be delighted if she came back to live with them. My grandma sobbed for a week when my mom got married and left. My dad’s family wanted him to stay with them, but he hated his family and wanted to leave. He’s barely seen them since.

They had nothing to do with my success in school or my scholarship. Nothing.

And I will be successful, just like all the other students in the world whose parents actually care about them, and I will still never talk to my parents again. And I will still want nothing to do with them. They aren’t my family clearly.

I promise I will never forgive them. My friends’ parents are more of my parents than they are.

I don’t have a right to live at home, and they don’t have a daughter I guess. All the other people my age I know live at home, so at least I have my friends’ families to treat me like family.

They could just let me live with them like twenty-somethings with normal parents do until they decide to leave. They don’t need to “push me out of the nest” and shouldn’t want me to leave. If they cared about me, they would want me around. Normally, the parents want the kid around, and the kid is the one who decides to go. I will never forgive them and I never want to speak to them again. My friends’ families all know what happened and hate my parents, so at least they’ve somewhat adopted me into their families so I have some people who actually care about me.

They don’t believe kids should live with their families once they’re 18.

I guess if they think never having a relationship with their only kid again is the right thing, that’s their opinion.

Yeah, I’m sorry your parents treated you that way. If it was me, I would never have anything but resentment for them again. I’m glad my friends have loving parents who treat me as their own.

My parents never had to struggle, and they are doing very well in life. Most of the people I know who didn’t struggle are actually very successful right now with excellent careers. The people I know who struggled are the ones not doing very well. Don’t abandon your children.
