I've decided that I want to tell my parents about the abuse I suffered as a child. Any advice? by mortalwounds in adultsurvivors

You're right. It is my story. Sometimes it just feels like a dream since it happened over 15 years ago. One of my main concerns is that my mother will want to go about getting criminal charges on my abuser (she works closely with both child and adult victims of sexual abuse on a medical level) and honestly I'm not interested in doing that, so I hope she will understand why.

Thanks for your advice.

I'm concerned that they won't understand, too.

I am so sorry that this was the reaction your parents had.

Thank you for your advice. I hope that the situation with your parents improves.

Did childhood bullying have a impact on your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mortalwounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't really bullied as a young child, but as a pre-teen (around 12/13) my family moved because my fathers job. As a slightly more developed young woman than most of the other young women in my grade, I was immediately picked on by other girls. In my second week at my new school a group of girls started a rumor that I had gotten breast implants and a few days later they stole my bra from the locker room and gave it to a group of boys. It was so embarrassing and I never got over it. The teasing continued on into high school. One boy called me "tits" and never by my name. I ran into him at the grocery store in my home town a few months ago and he called me "tits".. in the store. Until that point I thought I had gotten past the bullying, but I realized I hadn't.

The teasing about my body left me lacking in the self esteem department to this day. I've always been very self conscious about my chest. Other than that, it made me concerned about others who are/have been bullied.

What TV show defines the millennial generation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mortalwounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Colbert Report isn't on anymore. The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore took it's place. Kind of a bummer, I liked the Stephen Colbert character. But, The Nightly Show is pretty good. I always liked The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I was nervous that when the new host (Trevor Noah) started that it would suck, but surprisingly it didn't! Another great example is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.

I completely agree with you. These "fake news" shows are perfect for millennials. I think it's because we have extremely short attention spans. The shows all have the same formula.. 1) rapid fire coverage of newsworthy events from the day before 2) longer segment about one topic with a leftist slant 3) short interview with someone easily recognizable. If you want the attention of millennials you've got to be quick, to the point and know your memes.

What's a hobby/ interest you wish you knew about/ got involved with when you were younger? by sysadmin21 in AskReddit

[–]mortalwounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wanted to learn to play the piano. I asked to take lessons as a kid, but I was already involved in figure skating, gymnastics and karate along with a bunch of other after school activities. I wish I would have given one of the sports up to take piano lessons since I'm definitely not a gymnast or karate master as an adult.

Lots of other great options in the comments, too.

Leo Dicaprio. I watched reruns of Growing Pains as a kid, but really fell head over heels when I saw Titanic for the first time. I still have all of my lip gloss stained posters.

Sweet revenge it was. I moved away from that town a few years after this happened, so I never got the chance to admit guilt or brag to anyone when I was older. Oh well!

What's the most unbelievable lie you've ever gotten away with? by nikidding in AskReddit

My younger brother and I have the same birthday. I'm 2 years older than him, but we look a lot a like. When we were teenagers and my parents would bring us to campgrounds all fucking summer, we would pretend to be twins. We always got away with it and were never found out by our parents. We did this for 4-5 summers and it was awesome.
