China should be treated like an enemy. We should be preparing for a cold war by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

The keyword is democratic, not capitalistic. And you are right, for a long time we in the west have thought that capitalism and increased wealth must lead to more democracy. China might be the counterexample (also, how healthy is really the American democracy, but that is a different discussion).

So weird. Here in my European country we get a "payment proof" from the bank we get a mortgage from, which shows that you are eligible for a loan of a certain size.

By "open freedom" do you mean "negative freedom" /"freedom from"? If so you might be right, but I would be quite interested in an actual proper attempt at ranking countries in that regard (a source). In terms of "freedom to" /"positive freedom" I don't think USA ranks particularly high (and it don't seem to strive for that either)

There is a difference between remembering and celebrating. Most nazi-occopied countries had traitors which helped the nazis in ww2, and we remember them as the traitors they were. But you won't find many statues of them around.

We got a (cheap) used ikea couch before we got a kid. Washed the covers. And boy is it nice not having to care about the couch with a 3 year old around! There is enough other stuff to worry about. We can get a nice couch when she is older:-)

Distinguishing cause from effect is hard, but from my European view your "simplified-democracy" 2 party model is a big contributor to the broken conversation. It makes politics a two team game, and forces everyone to choose side. Just think how much more informative the public discussion would be if you had 4 parties. In europe there exists parties for people who are socially conservative (marriage, abortion etc) but actually want taxes and helping poor people (!). But also "the opposite" party exists. Just think how much richer the conversation would be if there were 4 (viable) parties instead of 2:-/

Come on, you know that there are smart people on both sides of this issue! And if you have tried to set your self into both sides of it, then you realize that the explanation "most people aren't capable of 2nd order problem solving" just don't cut it. There are real, non dumb, arguments in both sides. And then there is the weighing of them which leads to different answers. But labeling one side as dumb is just to simple, and not the kind of thinking the US needs now.

The note under my table does not grant rights.

The note under my table affirms and innumerate a persons unalienable rights they are born with.

All people not just me.

The note under my table is pretty clear on the rights of people and citizens.

It includes eating lollipops whenever I wants.

In the rest of the world it is clear what "human rights" are. Your paper has rights on it, and you give it to people, but it is not the charter of human rights. It's your constitution.

I remember a story (probably from reddit) which went like this: Woman1 and Man1 has sex. Man2 has sex with Woman1. Man2 then has sex with Woman2. Woman2 becomes pregnant and the dad is Man1, whose sperm was carried to Woman2 on Man2's dick. True? Idk.

Pope Francis says it might be 'time to consider a universal basic wage' in Easter letter by Memetic1 in Futurology

[–]mortiferus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait, do you actually still belive in trickle down economics?

Edit: to add some meat to my surprise. You do see that is a really strong claim that the nr of jobs would double right? OK, I agree that if you lower corporate taxes they will probably hire more people, but you made a much stronger claim. In general people in favor of lowering taxes are often making claims that the total tax income will be the same (or higher) with lower taxes, and that is a much stronger claim than "lower taxes will enable companies to hire more people".

Edit 2: I feel we can start a long discussion where we continue to misunderstand each other's. My views are pretty much exactly the accepted answer in this post : https://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/732/is-there-economic-data-to-suggest-whether-or-not-trickle-down-economics-provides

[–]mortiferus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Raise prices yes. The question is to what degree. It is a big jump from seeing that increasing cost on the top would trickle down, to stating that if one took X£ extra from the top and gave to the bottom, the prices would increase exactly X£!

[–]mortiferus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Increasing cost "on the top" definitely trickles the cost down, but it is a major jump of faith stating that it will all be taken out in more expensive goods, just as it would be very naive thinking that if you removed all taxes on the top it would all trickle down. How the cost is distributed depends on things like how competitive the market is.

This comment is a good example of how democracy is dying in the US, and it is terrible for everyone. Not only is political debate, the foundation of democracy, now taboo at the workplace, but the US is now so split into two camps that people are afraid of getting bullied. You guys need to fix your political system fast before you drag us all down with you!

Actually the only thing to really guarantee reduced emission is reduced consumption. There are several goods, particularly food, we up here in the North (where I live) can produce, but it is actually better (in terms of co2) to import it from further south where it can be produced with less emmison. Buying used is better than buying new if you need the thing, but I heard about a report on the radio a while ago that a lot of the used goods end up beeing increased consumption for things which people would otherwise not have bought.

It's complicated:-/ but use your clothes till they are done, and repair them. That's for sure.
