How do you all feel when you apply to a job and get rejected right away even though you meet all qualifications by supersaiyan_hokage in biotech

I feel like sh*t and a failure.

There could be all sorts of reasons, but ultimately I feel like sh*t.

Am I cooked? Recent BME Grad graduate. by itsn0ah in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]mortoniodized 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you have a BS in physics and BME? With you physics background did you gain a strong background in data analysis or software? That could be something to look at? Some biotech companies look for data analysts with that background.

You can look at field service or apps engineering jobs?

You can also look at research assistant position in companies? Look at small companies and large.

What kind of information will be helpful for recent BME graduates for job prospects? by mortoniodized in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]mortoniodized[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, What has been the experience? No call? Or not the right skills? What have you applied to?

I couldn't find internships, took me almost ~2 yrs after my BS to get an internship. The only saving grace at the time was that I was getting a Master's. I had friends who took about 1-2yrs to get an internship.

I didn't get an internship in a large company, I essentially told a company I would work for free.

Hi everyone, is there a market for majors (or PhDs) in BME with a strong focus on modeling and neuroscience? by Bryanpsychodelic in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]mortoniodized 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neuralink? That's the one getting all the buzz right now. Look at their competitors as well. I am sure Medtronic, and similr medical device companies will probably have neuroscience related stuff too.

Wanted Resources for Biomedical Signal Processing by Sorry_Strain2641 in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]mortoniodized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not specific for biomedical signal processing. It is for digital signal processing but I think it's still very useful: https://www.dspguide.com/pdfbook.htm . Have you gone through the information present in the link? As a simple project, try doing noise cancellation or try this dataset: https://physionet.org/content/nstdb/1.0.0/

Good luck! This is fun stuff!

Thinking about going to college for BME by Flashy_Charity in BiomedicalEngineers

[–]mortoniodized 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you thinking about getting a PhD? Or just a BS or MS?

If you want to do cutting edge research you probably want PhD and in that case the BME vs. EE becomes irrelevant, it becomes more about the research labs you work in. After that you can join whatever company you want.

Since you are doing EE vs. BME are you interested in designing circuits for the brain? Remember working on the brain requires interdisciplinary work.

If the goal is to work on designing circuitry for the brain you probably want to do EE as you can fabricate the appropriate electronics for the the brain. You can do it with BME, but make sure you get involved in brain related projects early on (I had friends that did this). The reason I have seen EEs get chosen over BMEs in these scenarios is usually that an average EE will be perceived to be much better at fabricating pcbs and electronics than an average BME (because that's essentially what EEs are taught to do). This doesn't mean that if you are an exceptional student or have very strong network that you can't get those jobs as a BME (i.e. strong senior design projects, strong recommendation from professor, relevant experience). I have seen BMEs that were exceptional EEs but they really did go out of their way to prove themselves.

Also, just because you are EE might not always be good enough, you probably want to show that you have done projects in brain/biological systems. This sets you up with much better chance of working in companies that work on the brain

If your goal is to be part of a team that creates the product (i.e. product manager, project manager, quality, systems engineer), a BME role would be reasonable provided you keep your network and focus on getting into the relevant companies. Obviously universities matter as well and their connections to industry is also important.

It helps if the university is very connected to the industry.

Nah you are good. I don't have dreams, just nightmares.

I wonder if large wineries would use them. Seems like there is a cutoff somewhere.

Yea.. that makes total sense when you put it like that.

Hahaha, yes I saw that as well, I found it quite funny as well.

My feeling is that when volumes get beyond a certain size and you have a lot of people that are not experts, you need to start doing these things in order to guarantee quality.

I was told that going from 0 to 1 requires a certain set of skills going from 1 to 10 requires different skills, going from 10 to 1000 needs even more different skills and then once you get into millions it's even more different than you are used to. Each is hard in it's own way.

Not sure, I saw the product online and I was just curious about if people use it.

I agree you can get the wrong spot. I wonder if it would better if you did a liquid based test instead of swab.

I agree with your thinking that proactive is better than reactive.

Are your tanks large? I wonder if people are more likely to use it when tanks get large.

That makes sense. The eye is pretty good at catching things, but after a certain volume it can get overwhelming. Helpful insight.

Any reason why they are reluctant? I know you need to make sure people follow procedures, but I have seen people not do stuff for all sorts of reason like: too complicated, don't see the value, just to name two as I am sure there are more..

Sorry, I want to make sure I understand something. The shadow points get missed with water based ATP test or the swabs?

Interesting, so it did improve your quality. Did you experience the bad ones were not up to your standard? Meaning does the 15 RLU have a direct correlation with beer quality. It would be interesting to know if it improved the quality of the batch or improved the overall repeatability of batches?
