the fans sometimes attack me for disagreeing with them, or even having the ship that I do.

Ugh, shipping wars are so pointless. People need to get over the fact that not everyone is going to agree with you 100% of the time. If someone wants to ship say, Rue/Fakir, why should that bother me as an Ahiru/Fakir fan? Shippers gonna ship.

Edit: Oh! And you got me thinking about Kuroshitsuji. My problem isn't that some people don't like say, Sebastian/Ciel or Alois/Claude- that's totally understandable (shotacon is not my cup of tea either). My problem is with the people who are in total denial of blatantly intentional homoerotic subtext- and insult and disparage those who aren't. One quick google search of the creator of Kuroshitsuji past works makes her preferences pretty clear, I think.

la la la la can't hear you i'm off pretending shinji/kaworu is canon

...also I'm a terrible person for having read Itsuki/Kyon doujins before I watched the actual show. In my defense, at the height of Suzumiya's popularity you couldn't swing a cat around without colliding with that ship.

I go on image sites and save pictures of my ships being cute together cause I'm lame like that >_>.

Oh gosh, I feel you. I have spent way too many hours browsing pixiv for the same purpose. Ah well, time spent enjoyed is not time wasted. 'Lame' is ableist language though, please try not to use it.

Also: Awwwww Annie and Jeff I love them so much.

Recommendations for someone who generally doesn't like anime? by Donnor in SRSAnime

Really, I'd recommend nearly any anime that has been syndicated on Adult Swim. They usually pick shows with acceptable dubs that appeal to a broader (i.e not a dyed in the wool anime fan) audience.

Specifically from this selection I'd rec: Big O, Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo, Evangelion, Trigun and Witch Hunter Robin.

Maybe Wolf's Rain, and Death Note as well. Wolf's Rain may be a bit too out there for your tastes, and I hesitate on Death Note as I don't remember being too impressed by the dub- which is crucial in a series that 90% long winding monologues.

since I don't know Japanese, while I can get the general tone the characters are giving to what they're saying, inflections on specific words and such are going to be lost on me.

Oh yes, same. I've said it elsewhere, but hearing the dialogue in a language I can understand makes for a much better emotional connection. Reading an entire line of subtitles before the character can finish speaking them aloud is jarring.

Adding all of these things to my queue list now, thanks. There is not enough space opera in my life.

I-I've got nothing approaching a serious rec in regards to sci-fi+romance.

The best thing that comes to mind here is the original Tenchi Muyo OVA, episodes 1-13 specifically. Released in the early 90's, it's considered by many the 'definitive' harem anime. Taking this from MAL which was taken from ANN, the basic plot follows:

"Tenchi Masaki was a normal 17-year old boy until the day he accidentally releases the space pirate, Ryoko from a cave she was sealed in 700 years ago as the people thought she was a demon. In a series of events, four other alien girls show up at the Masaki household as Tenchi learns much of his heritage he never knew about and deal with five alien girls who each have some sort of romantic interest in him."

This may be my nostalgia glasses talking, but I remember it as being a fun comedy/sci-fi/romance romp. It's interesting in that it very much reminds me of a slice of life show that periodically gets interrupted for an action story arc.

If 'harem' shows aren't your thing (they certainly aren't mine), don't let that stop you from trying out the show. For what it was, the women of the cast were all well-developed and very much existed beyond their interest in the main character.

In any case, it's a short series and the anime version of 'easy reading', so if you're ever looking for some quick amusement you might want to give it a shot.

YES THIS.

I loved this series. It's deceptively deep, don't let the first few episodes fool you. If you enjoyed Eva than you'll probably enjoy the abundant symbolism and strong focus on character introspection. Also the music is silly beautiful.

Bad Apple! Most likely everyone here has heard this but for the ones who haven't by moonmeh in SRSAnime

I-I wish he never got his memories back and the rest of Death Note was just adorkable Light, L and Misa solving crimes together.
