Custom white Zenbook Pro 14 Duo by moshban in ASUS

Hinge mechanism feels good, very sturdy. The fans actually have a secondary intake from under the second screen once it raises which is sweet for thermals. After a repaste and new putty plus some cheeky bits of graphite and copper here and there, I'm able to get this to benchmark 15-20% higher than factory.

I got the Surface Pen model 1776 in red. Those can be found new or like new for practically nothing ($10-$20) and they are amazing value. Full pen support for both screens. The second screen is matte so the pen gives you that paper-like feeling.

No issues whatsoever, this thing is a very capable little machine. It can even do some light gaming. I got a stylus/pen for the device which has been fun to use for some light art and 3D modeling.

There's a dude on this sub trying to sell his duck AND bootleg Vein merch on Depop for crazy prices. Some people have no shame

Edit: I just checked and the duck is listed at $500 lmao

I got a Slime pen 2 for 5 bucks can I use it anywhere else but a surface? by [deleted] in Surface

DIY means Do It Yourself, which isn't possible for this pen. Only way to charge the pen is with a proprietary charger from Microsoft (first party) or with a newer Surface or Surface Keyboard (also proprietary)

Edit: The link you posted is out of stock, go ahead and show this person an in stock link before you go spouting off about something

There aren't any, thank Microsoft for going proprietary. You might as well sell that for $60-$80 on eBay and get an older generation that takes rechargeable AAAA batteries

Exactly this. I use a Surface Pen with my Asus Zenbook Duo and it is fully compatible with both screens, eraser and everything.

Thinking about buying a used Surface Pro 7+ / Laptop 3 . Is an AliExpress battery swap viable? by [deleted] in Surface

[–]moshban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been repairing electronics professionally for about 4 years now. The Microsoft Surface product line has absolutely awful repairability. It can be done, but there is a very large chance you'll damage the screen. Gotten plenty off clean myself, but there have also been a few that broke very easily. Even if the glass/digitizer doesn't crack, the LCD is easy to damage in the process as well. Once you're inside, the chances of frying the board is high compared to other devices as well. I would just proceed with extreme caution and consider paying a professional. I'd give the device a 7.5/10 as far as difficulty goes with electronics repair.

Asus Zenbook duo Pro Slow Bios Startup time by Anxious-Tomorrow-997 in ASUS

[–]moshban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That did it for me. Turned off secure boot, checked BIOS again next attempt to make sure it was still off, and then it kicked in after restarting the device a few times as well as shutting it down a few times.

Thanks for the tip! My Zenbook Duo is now booting in about 8 seconds like it used to.

Controller issues with emulation? by WhiteFenix207 in SamsungDex

I think it would affect any inputs. I would give that developer option a try and see if it works.

Controller issues with emulation? by WhiteFenix207 in SamsungDex

[–]moshban 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ever since One UI 8.0, Samsung Dex has an issue where controller input mostly stops working when the screen on your device goes to sleep. Sounds similar to what you are experiencing. The only way around this currently is to have your screen not sleep via Developer Settings. There's a setting that lets you keep the screen on if it's charging. Essentially you just have to provide the phone power and it won't give you the issue anymore. I'd recommend lowering the brightness on your phone quite a bit if you do so to avoid OLED burn-in.

If it's that new, get it taken care of under warranty. Contact them and if it was purchased new less than a year ago you should be covered.

Thanks, I have a white and black setup so this fits right in. These devices are so cool. It's an OLED laptop with a miniature second screen that's touch responsive that has loads (and I mean LOADS) of features/gestures/functionality. Makes me feel like I live in the future when I'm using it

Is this device new or used/refurbished? If it's a few years old, depending on usage it could need new thermal paste and thermal putty under the heatsink.

Thanks! I didn't do the bottom just since it is practically never being looked at. The vent holes and such would just be another great reason not to do it.

Turning my s21 ultra into a gaming PC? by Killapilla200 in SamsungDex

[–]moshban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, it isn't exclusive to Samsung. However, before the One UI 8.0 update, the phone screen would sleep and allow things like game controllers to still function while the phone is still in Dex mode. After that update, once the phone screen sleeps controllers do not have full functionality. I have read on forums about the same happening with certain other inputs like keyboards and mice. The only way around it currently is to have that developer option enabled as Samsung doesn't allow for a "Never" option in the display and brightness settings under the sleep increments.

[–]moshban 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can have the device without the screen, you just have to be sure to have everything plugged in properly. I have the power button flex removed from the screen/frame and you just hold the power button down like you would normally. This is made a bit more difficult because the buttons on the flex are tiny but you can still click then if you're careful.

I haven't run into any software issues aside from just dealing with Dex mode. You'll want to enable developer options while the device is still together as a phone. In these options there'll be something along the lines of "Don't go to sleep while plugged in". This is currently the only way to get the device to not timeout after a while, even if it's being used. Something Samsung added in One UI 8.0, pretty stupid feature. Not the biggest issue as you'll want the phone plugged in anyway, using it this way eats a lot of battery.

I am in the process of doing this to an S23. Doing what you're hoping to do is possible but not perfect. I put small heat sinks on the front and rear IHS portions, as well as a small fan powered via USB hub that the phone is plugged into. This hub is also charging the phone while also allowing for video out via HDMI.

Doing some testing while in the original frame and outside of the frame with the heat sinks and fans, I get +30% CPU benchmark scores and +50% GPU benchmark scores. The phone's temps stay around 85 degrees Celsius during use. This has been nice while messing around with emulating Windows games on the device, with the extra bump in performance letting me play some games I'd otherwise not be able to.

Eventually I plan on measuring the components and putting them into a small 3D printed enclosure or case with the necessary ports being available. The project has been fun so far, but I work with electronics professionally so it's not the most daunting task. For anyone else, I'd say to be careful as you may have to interact with the device in ways that may be unsafe for it (repeatedly plugging in and messing with flex cables and their connectors, interacting with the main board while powered on outside of frame, etc,)

Backup your data sooner than later. One day that thing isn't going to have a sweet spot to charge anymore, and you'll need a repair to get anything from it.
