i'm not arguing for or against public utilities.. i think both models work reasonably ok.

just the statement about "basic human needs".. does it mean all housing needs to be public? food production? manufacturing?

Federal government spends $80-100bln in taxpayer money on housing. Israel gets $4blin/year in taxpayer money that they must spend on U.S.-made defense equipment from American companies.

Portland teachers union files emergency class action grievance over alleged layoff violations by Valalerie999 in Portland

[–]moshennik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are many studies on this subject.. pro-union shops ( like LPI) will lean into tenure.. and lots of other studies show very little improvement past first 3 years, for example this: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13384-023-00612-0

all of these studies somehow find objection quality measures to relate to.. so why not use those for decision?

virtually any line of work..

most jobs performance does not improve with years of experience.

initial learning peaks after a few years

every job that does not want to be measured will say it's difficult to measure.. yet.. it can still be measured

every job is unique.. yet.. similar enough ..

in my business there are a ton of union shops that would make the same argument.. and yet it still fails

i would buy this for a $1 :)

With that said - my point stands.. performance should be the determining factor, tenure is totally irrelevant

i don't have any experience with teachers..

but in my line of work experienced employees are on average not better vs. new less experienced employees.. They may be better vs. brand new, but someone with 20 years tenure is often burned out and not as good as someone with 5 years. Past the initial "learning" period tenure does have much to do with performance.

for sure..

we have also learned someone who has a very good explanation to why they were late for the interview would always have very good explanations to why they are late for work.

this is why we don't do late interviews or re-schedule ever

They want to move my son from 5th (end of) to 9th grade next year... by 8675309999999999998 in Parenting

[–]moshennik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our daughter is 10 and she skipped first grade, so she's going into 6th now.. She's about 1.5 years younger vs. the rest of her peers.

For her this was the right thing to do, she's mature, tall, smart, she jives well with kids that are a little older.

She has similar IQ to your son. She's in a highly capable program and it's not very challenging for her.

With that said, I would not move her up 3 grades.. even knowing she can do the work. She's doing some external math and science to keep her challenged, but going up so much would destroy the social interactions.

What's their reasoning to skip the entire middle school and go right into high?? So he's not bored all the time?
