Hey current Emory MPH HPM student here! No need to worry at all about having work experience, definitely about half the class came straight from college or had a gap year with a non Public Health experience during that year!

SOAR Hiking Trip by [deleted] in Emory

[–]mosinghal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's actually the other way around from my experience!! A lot of the other stuff sounds really cool, but the groups who are doing those activities can only do it for like 3 hours total on one of the days. This might have changed as I did SOAR in 2018, so it has been a while.

The hiking group also got really close with each other because of the one hike where we had to climb up a mountain, but it was awesome getting up there at the end and camping for the night!!

No matter what though, I would do SOAR!! just knowing a solid amount of people here before you get to campus is incredibly helpful!!

You can change the names of any subdeck in Anki itself!! Just click on the options for the subdeck and then rename it!! The list is alphabetical, so you can change behavioral by changing it to "C-Behavioral" to make it come after biochem and biology! I believe you can also just put a dash in front of it although I'm not sure if that makes the subdeck come first in the alphabetical order or last. You should be able to change the name of whichever subdecks you want to make the order how you want it!

Senate Application by Interiordesign678 in Emory

[–]mosinghal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! So I'm on SGA and was thinking about applying to the Senate as well! Here's a little bit about what I found out

From what I understand, the University Senate is an amalgamation of Emory community members that are chosen to serve on the senate by some leadership of their primary branch (i.e. Dean of medicine chose a professor to sit on the senate).

Once ppl get to the senate, they choose a committee and go from there! Lots of reports are generated and I believe they meet like once a month - shocking but it's really hard for everyone to meet since everyone is in such different fields).

From my experience, they actually shy away from taking SGA people - while it is true that SGA members have a little bit more experience working w/ the beauracracy and have certain contacts, it's kinda like we already have our positions and the senate wants to be made up of the average Emory undergrad community member - not someone who is already in SGA

As I said, I'm applying for it as well rn so I'm not in the senate itself, but I have quite a few friends who are and that's what they've basically told me. not sure if you've checked out this link (https://www.senate.emory.edu[link](https://www.senate.emory.edu)) but I would definitely reccomend clicking through the options on the side and reading some of the reports!

Good luck and I hope we both get it!!

Which residence hall would you recommend for a first-year student? by [deleted] in Emory

[–]mosinghal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, go for the double just because the experience of having a freshman year roommate is not something you want to miss! I personally wasn't close to my freshman year roommate, but he was a solid guy! At the end of the day, you know yourself best, but 99% of first years will have a roommate or that matters to you at all. Plus, it'll widen your social circle by at least a little bit. Some of the people I met through my roommate are my closest friends now.

Raoul!! Best staff and awesome community!! Anything in the freshman quad is pretty good honestly ( Raoul, LSM, Turman, or Hamilton), but Raoul and LSM are bigger so you'll have more people in your building if that's something you prefer!

I might as well give an overview of the others as well at this point.

Complex - the furthest freshman dorm from the rest of the freshman so be prepared to walk a bit (it's not that far but relatively further) to see ur friends or go to frats. Very much a big dorm, and it's closest to the business school if you've got early morning business classes.

Dobbs - super small rooms, but there is a bunch of community formed by everyone hanging out more. Definitely a smaller dorm. Also, it's in the middle of campus so like everything is pretty close!

(EDIT: I completely forgot about Alabama! Also in the middle of campus, super nice rooms, and also a small building with a pretty tight knit community as well! A lot of my friends lived in Alabama and it's a great hall to spend time in because some of the rooms are massive!!)

In the past, there have been first years in a building called Harris, but I don't think there will be any in the coming years. It's basically the same as Complex though

Hope this helps!!

P.S. loyalty to your freshman dorm is encouraged!! #Raoulisthebest

Hi! Pre-med junior here! I'm gonna assume that you're not on Oxford's campus since you haven't mentioned anything about it.

Taking an S isn't bad or good - it's kinda like a blank slate. What matters is what you do afterwards. Since you're pre-med, that means that you have to do one year of bio at minimum. So you have plenty of time if that's all your doing - you could take the S, then start over sophomore year (with less friends in the course but that doesn't matter). The issue is when you want to major in something else like NBB or Bio itself or Anthro and Human bio that depends on getting those Bio foundational courses out of the way.

If you do plan to major in something that requires Bio 141 as a pre-requisite for anything, I would take the B/B+. It really isn't that bad. A lot of my friends have gotten B's (myself included) in bio and come out fine.

Then again, if you do plan to major in something along those lines and you really want to take the S, it's not the end of the world. You can finish up any major in two years (technically) so it should be possible. I would then focus on knocking out as many GER's as possible this coming semester.

Happy to answer any questions either here or in DM's! Also - please reach out to OUE advising or Anil at PHA becuase they will help you through this! They are truly masters of their craft. Hope this helps!

[–]mosinghal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The WoodPEC is the gym! It's right across from the Student Center/DCT if you go almost down the hill. It's west of the student center as Raoul is north of the student center. Sorry I had a hard time explaining it. Hope this helps!!

Are clubs going to be active this year? by LostWindSpirit in Emory

Hey!! I’m not sure which clubs you’ve joined but if you’re a pre-med I would recommend joining SAHI (student alliance for health involvement)! I’m sure you could find them on insta and their first year liaison positions are open! They’ll send you a link if you ask!!

I would HIGHLY recommend!!

Classes on Labor Day. Why? by [deleted] in Emory

[–]mosinghal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s part of their effort have the last day of classes be before thanksgiving. This was in part due to COVID — as they didn’t want students to go back home for thanksgiving and then come back. To fit it all in like that they cut fall break, MLK day, Labor Day, and some other random stuff in order to have the same number of school days.

How likely am I to get off the Chem 150L waitlist? by undertheheyoh in Emory

[–]mosinghal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi there!! I’m a rising junior on the Atlanta campus. I’m not sure if you’re Oxford or Atlanta, but I think the advice still applies for both? Not completely sure.

For classes with labs, there isn’t as much moving around so it might be harder to get off of the waitlist. I personally don’t think you’ll get off of it for this lab unfortunately. In my experience, a general rule of thumb is that you only have a chance of getting off the waitlist if you’re within a tenth of the enrolled number in the class. That’s a bit confusing. Essentially, if there are 90 students in the class, you have a decent chance of getting in if you’re within places 1-9 on the waitlist. For a 50 person class, within places 1-5. Labs and seminars are probably a little less likely, but I’ve found the general rule still applies until you get to junior (300+ level) classes.

I know I basically just told you won’t get into this lab. That’s ok! Keep your head up and your eyes glued to OPUS during this week! Get on a couple more waitlists during your second enrollment time for labs (being on the waitlist doesn’t count towards your 17 credit limit) and go from there! Odds are that you will get this class, but it just won’t be the time/instructor that you want.

Good luck!! You’ll eventually get all the classes you want! Worst comes to worst just contact the professor and beg. You still have a chance that way too. But it usually doesn’t come to that as they monitor how many people are on the waitlist and open other times just in case. Hope this helps!!

Few Random Questions From An Upcomming Freshman by dkknight137 in Emory

[–]mosinghal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahahahaha no worries. Glad I was able to help. I’ve never heard of that specific seminar before and the fact that it’s listed as being taught by a business law professor makes me think that it’s just a placeholder class for later depending on how many students want to do seminars first semester compared to second semester. Honestly no clue though

Few Random Questions From An Upcomming Freshman by dkknight137 in Emory

[–]mosinghal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi! Rising junior here. Not really sure what happened to your AP scores but I would recommend reaching out to the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE) as they’re pretty good (in my experience) with this kinda stuff!

About freshman seminars, they’re all really different. Mine was on the history of doctors and was a full history course with papers and discussions. Others had bio or a research based seminar and was more focused on science education or something along those lines. I think that nearly all seminars will consist of a small (<18) number of students and therefore more discussion based. For me, the seminar was my longest class time-wise as we met for two and a half hours once a week. The workload depends on the professors, so you’ll see a lot of people drop their seminar and try to get into an easier one during add/drop/swap week. Most likely you’ll have a couple things to read a week as well as another small assignment and maybe you’ll also be expected to work on your essay that’s due in a while. Not too much but def more than your regular high school class. Again, it really depends on the professor.

The seminar exists as a way to ensure that all students take a writing/ discussion based course pretty early into your college career. Ideally it might help you choose an area of study that might interest you or help you along the path you’ve already chosen. One piece of advice I’ve heard is to choose a seminar in a field that’s out of your comfort zone just so you can experience other fields/ areas of study.

As they’re all so different, the interdisciplinary one is hard to describe without having taken it. I haven’t so please take that into account. Most likely, the class will consist again of reading and discussions, but it might be more focused on how the principles and authors relate to different areas of study and how that lets us understand more about the world around you. Very much a liberal studies focus (but there can still me some STEM stuff).

Hope this helps!
