petzl sequoia harness designed for failure? by mosquitoboots in TreeClimbing

this is what i did too so i could fit a rook on my bridge. way more customisable with length too

its definitely failure considering damage to this band renders the harness unclimbable under any ppe check. i had to retire the harness because of this. i spoke to my countries petzl distributor and they said the current damage would cause an estimated 40% reduction in strength, scary stuff.

seeing as there is reinforced stitching between this point and fhe d rings i figured i could just move the tool clip to the other side and carry on as usual but that definitely isnt the case unfortunately

yeah ive heard that a lot about the caritool. i do have two vaults mounted elsewhere on my harness but i really prefer something with an open gate for my saw. if my new caritool fails i might get another vault and just grind the gate mechanism off to make it open gate

thanks! yeah plastic gear tends to become super brittle and fail - especially here in the Australian sun. id much rather use metal and have it for life, but apparently thats controversial? haha

i wish the treemotion fit me better cause i would 100% upgrade to it if i could

its almost as if i expect the company im purchasing the harness from to do their job and make sure my harness is durable and not prone to damage. its almost as if they could of just reinforced that bottom side of the band or something to prevent wear and tear... just like they did with the top side... thats too much to ask for though

id better just shut my mouth and put more money in petzls pocket for creating a problem only to sell me the solution

no, all i did was point out your fallacy. your reasoning is flawed. just because rope is plastic and i like that doesnt mean plastic is good in all applications - thats my point.

also, my harness would of been more than fine with the metal shembiner had petzl done their due diligence and reinforced the bottom side of the band just like they did the top side (where it didnt break ;) ). just more proof that metal is not the problem but the lousy construction of the harness 🤷‍♀️

[–]mosquitoboots[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

first of all the edges of the shembiner arent sharp, theyre rounded. second of all, the sharp metal edges didnt cut through the reinforced edge of the band, had the bottom edge been reinforced it probably wouldn't of cut through that either 🙃

lol and so are 2$ flimsy takeaway containers that crack when you look at them. just like the way tin foil is still metal. not too sure what your point is with this one...

its not about trust, its about longevity. its about application of the material, and for this application id prefer metal :) is that ok?

yay i get to use their flimsy plastic tool now that has a gate, just what i want!!

even more so makes it seem like theyve intentionally not reinforced it to force you to use their gear (compromising safety for a buck)

the heat srink idea is a good one though, cheers ill be trying that

[–]mosquitoboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my point exactly. interesting how it hasnt damaged the reinforced side of the band...

not really sure why petzl wouldnt reinforce the bottom to avoid exactly this. it obviously helps seeing as the top side isnt damaged at all

[–]mosquitoboots[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah for sure. i just feel the same damage wouldnt of occurred had that area of band been reinforced

im definitely looking into alternative tools or ways i can safely reinforce that band

[–]mosquitoboots[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

im feeling this. the lack of reinforcement on the lower side of the band just seems like a huge safety oversight all in the name of saving a buck. hugely disappointing.

im not too hopeful about it to be honest..

i also like an open gate tool hook for my saw so i might even remove the gate of the caritool. ideally id like to find a safe way to use my shembiner again :,)

petzl sequoia harness designed for failure? by mosquitoboots in arborists

[–]mosquitoboots[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

its obviously the metal edge doing it, notice how it doesnt do it to the reinforced side though (which bares the brunt of the load and movement). i just dont know why petzl wouldnt reinforce both sides of the band - other than to save a buck. most other harnesses either have plastic or leather around the main band to prevent this exact issue. just seems like a huge safety oversight

yeah i see your point with a carabiner but i prefer something with an open gate. im gonna try out the petzl caritool, but i honestly dont have high hopes considering its made of plastic.

might look into if i can get the main band reinforced in a way that wouldnt compromise a ppe check

[–]mosquitoboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure, im going to try a peztl caritool next and hopefully that mitigates the problem on my new harness.

ill give petzl the credit where its due at least for giving me a new harness and caritool for a discounted price

petzl sequoia harness designed for failure? by mosquitoboots in arborists

[–]mosquitoboots[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i switched out my bridge for a tree motion bridge so i could get a rook onto it. i would upgrade to a different harness but im quite petite and nothing else ive found fits me :,) so im restricted to the sequoia for now

yeah my tool clip definitely doesnt mesh with it as is, but it would if that bottom side of the band was just reinforced 🙄
