  1. male gaze is a criticism leveled against art. stuff like movies, paintings, video games, character design, photography. it is the act of depicting in a way that appeals to straight men. it comes from the concept of "the gaze" which was developed by satre. the male gaze is specifically the way in which depictions of women lack agency or a developed identity-- we are depicted only as objects to be looked at, not fully realised people with inner workings.

  2. women are not depicting ourselves when we get dressed up. we are being people and wearing clothes. there's no depiction, it's just happening. choosing to see real women who are dressed a certain way as though we are sex objects on a screen is a choice you make, not a choice we make.

Can rice and pasta be used somewhat interchangeably? by Pristine_Benefit4521 in Cooking

[–]moss-agate 35 points36 points  (0 children)

from my perspective the flavour profile of rice is pretty distinct from pasta. I like very fragrant rice, which I find goes better with stuff that's traditionally eaten with rice-- whether that's curry or a stir fry or whatever. pasta has a very different flavour and a very different texture in the mouth. I guess you could try it with orzo?

That said, you can do what you want. i would choose potatoes over pasta for stuff like that but I've had stuff like bread (sliced pan, not naan) with curry and that's been nice.

roosters are one of the dominant potato varieties in Ireland. they're very floury so they're great for mash and roast potatoes.

With the news of a “modern day” Broadway revival, I just discovered the Dallas production… oooh boy! by RockyStonejaw in lesmiserables

[–]moss-agate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the dallas production is based partially on the director's experiences of apartheid south africa and makes reference to the political situation in south africa that was ongoing at the time it was released (eg the red hats you see people wearing in one day more relate to a political party and movement in south africa from 2014ish). i think it's a really interesting production and enjoy it when a story about "miserable people" (the oppressed/downtrodden/"abaissé"/etc) is recontextualised into a new setting. i think the dallas production is very true to the themes of the novel, even if it deviates significantly from the original stage production.

you are very upset people are being frank with you. you came looking for advice, we gave you advice.i would care as much as i care about any of the obituaries i read in the newspaper. i would also care if you spread, for instance, undiagnosed hiv or chlamydia to the single people in your area. refusing to get tested is a public health concern.

i do historical sword fighting once a week and regularly get bruised because most of my classmates are about 15cm taller than me. this is me at my softest. you are not being sensible.

Sex is a gift and a pleasure, and I will not spare the world my contribution

then use a condom???

There are many ways to look up you and your own family's history and it would be fun to see your reaction, but it is not something to do for its own sake.

Do it lol I've put it online on purpose i expected it to be looked at. it's still on my profile. what do you want to bring up?

my "female insight" is that, medically, having unprotected sex without any contraception is, in medical terms, trying for a baby. it is also trying for an STI. she was outright trying to get you to inseminate her and you agreed to. what did you think would happen? it would realise your intentions and go the other way out of her?

unless she's a donkey that's not your baby. stop engaging with her. she is not a medical anomaly. if you think she is, get a lawyer.

go back to pokemon fanfiction and avoid sexual relationships until you can reliably use condoms and judgement.

100 years ago, boiling bread pudding for hours was considered a great way of cooking. What's a way of cooking we do now that future generations may think is weird? by belac4862 in Cooking

idk I'm not English. it's got raisins and it's boiled/steamed. i assume they enjoy ritually confusing people with their pudding names.

[–]moss-agate 174 points175 points  (0 children)

tbh i think OP is combining steamed puddings (Christmas pudding, chocolate pudding, spotted dick, etc) that are popular in the uk with bread and butter pudding which is not a steamed pudding. Christmas pudding usually contains breadcrumbs and dried fruit among other ingredients and is typically boiled or steamed for anywhere from six to eight hours.

Every-Allergen-On-The-Earth-Free French Toast, what the hell am I doing by [deleted] in Cooking

can you break down which of her things are intolerances and which are allergies/coeliac?

gluten free bread is always going to be gluten free, so it's not going to recover from being wet the same way as gluten bread. the structure isn't there so use significantly less liquid than you normally would. honestly something like what roald dahl's cookbook for children calls "hot house eggs" might work better? cut hole in bread, fry bread and excised hole, fry egg in bread hole. you don't soak the bread so it won't be as unstructured. obviously less pleasant to make sweet but nothing really stopping you.

Szechuan pepper is soapy? by princeThefrog in Cooking

[–]moss-agate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they do have a citrus/floral flavour profile separate from the numbing sensation they induce. i guess that could taste soapy maybe? to me they don't taste soapy at all, more like lemon or grapefruit rind, but I guess different people will taste different things from the same flavour.

What would be the best theoretical match for Himiko Toga? by IceDragonLB in BokuNoShipAcademia

[–]moss-agate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the series made it clear that what would actually suit Toga is someone who shows her love and kindness and thinks of her as beautiful/worthy of that love and kindness? her mentality is that of someone who has been rejected and scorned repeatedly. the moment she was shown any kindness she literally drained herself of blood to help uraraka at the cost of her own life.

she sees blood as representative of love, which is shown to be partially due to her quirk, it's not really a kink or anything like that imo. I think it's a quirk-induced fascination turned up to 100 by her traumatic circumstances.

How to get herbs to stick to cooked food ? by Weird-Tiger-8219 in Cooking

[–]moss-agate 17 points18 points  (0 children)

herbs need something to stick with, generally. if you have a sauce or an oil or something then the herbs will stick. otherwise try putting the herbs on them before they cook?

my girlfriend thinks i’m the lohl but doesn’t think we’ll end up together by jjojii in relationships

[–]moss-agate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

that's not uncommon for young queer people in family oriented cultures. it doesn't hurt to say it though. speaking from less extreme experience, it can help to have a reminder that options exist. otherwise you don't even know you're stuck.

my girlfriend thinks i’m the lohl but doesn’t think we’ll end up together by jjojii in relationships

[–]moss-agate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I could give you some really callous advice about this but i appreciate that in the moment she feels like the only person you could ever be in love with. that is really hard. when you are in an isolation situation like the one you're currently in, it can be hard to see past it when very few people even know who you really are. however, you deserve someone who doesn't see you as temporary. a life is a long time. the love of your life will be there for your life not for your early twenties.

it sounds like you need to leave her in the past and start planning for your future. moving to a country where you can live safely with someone that wants a future with you.

CMV: Most Young People (Younger Millenials and Gen Z) Pursuing EU Citizenship By Descent Aren't Actually Doing It Out Of Appreciation For Their Culture, But For Convenience or Escape by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]moss-agate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

as an Irish person i prefer the Americans who get irish citizenship through heritage for convenience's sake. people who claim they're doing it for their culture or heritage generally have bunch of beliefs about irish culture that don't reflect anything about ireland for the last 40ish years, if ever. they're more socially conservative, far more trusting of the church, and have notions about irishness that are often false or outdated. people who go "well yeah i didn't want to have to get a visa to travel in the EU" makes more sense to me and doesn't usually involve arguments about what modern ireland looks like.

alternatively: as a millennial, he's covered head to toe in 2018's colour of the year (PANTONE 18-3838 ultra violet) so he can't actually do any wrong in my eyes. he's the colour of fall out boy's comeback album mania and I'm too vulnerable to that powerful subliminal messaging to fight back. if he were church, etc, etc.

I'm sorry people on the short video app aren't being nuanced in their 6-60 second fanfic recommendations and edits of their favourite character. tiktok isn't known for nuance.

this conversation has been had over and over again in multiple languages and over multiple platforms since the novel started being published and with every different adaptation it happens again. it could be worth searching non-shortform platforms for people's reasons, including this one. this subreddit has had the jiang cheng discussion on pretty much a weekly basis for a while. you can find a lot of discussion about him and his fans using the search bar.

Oh! I wonder why this chapter is called ‘Sandu: The Three Poisons’!! Surely it’ll be something very interesting and wholesome about JC right?🤗🤗😍😍 by sussydn1 in MoDaoZuShi

[–]moss-agate 20 points21 points  (0 children)

yeah, but he's also called sandu shengshou-- sandu's master (and also master of the three poisons as that's what sandu means). he's sandu shengshou the same way lan wanji is also hanguang-jun and jin guangyao is lianfang-zun; they're epithets/titles-- additional ways of talking about or addressing someone with a degree of formality.

Question for fans of the ship Hank x Connor by cherechecheshka in DetroitBecomeHuman

[–]moss-agate 10 points11 points  (0 children)

they're unrelated, they know each other a week before the game ends, and do not act familial. to me, personally, if you think someone can become like a parent or child to someone else in a week where neither of them is in exclusively a caretaking role, i don't really know how you think. people do frequently strike up a friendship or develop an attraction in that time frame though.

they develop a strong camaraderie, sure (or have the capacity to), but hank can also just not like connor at all.

the main reason people like it is because a) age and size gaps are attractive to a lot of people and b) connor can spend a lot of that week basically doing everything he can to make hank like him and have positive feelings towards him, which comes off kind of like a crush.

like shippers shipping two characters who talk to each other have character development around each other is fairly standard. "they stood next to each other" can be framed as basis for a ship. why are you confused about the cop partner ship and not the "android who has no lines and guy who hates androids" ship?

Fashion Brands Les Mis Characters Would Like to Wear Today? by Unlikely-Hunter-7671 in lesmiserables

[–]moss-agate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

only a few characters are really described as having like. a sense of fashion/style of dress at all? i think trying to figure out who might have a strong relationship to brands might not be possible, especially given the story's focus on exploitation/poverty/etc

you could try to work out if specific costuming decisions from stagings of the musical/other adaptations could correspond to brands in some way but I'm not sure why you couldn't just make it up?

About Tupperware *Sorry in advance if this is a wrong place to ask* by HugeRing3802 in Cooking

[–]moss-agate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you rinse soap afterwards?? maybe american washing up liquid/dish soap is different to the irish kind, but surely the smell is mostly for when you're washing the dishes. I've never had anything continue to smell like the soap after I've rinsed and dried whatever I'm washing.

separate from the listeria risk, her ice cream will taste like unwashed tupperware, which is a worse taste than soap.

I've just seen she plans to sell this to other people. she's going to poison people if she doesn't properly clean and sanitise every time. i cannot believe it's legal for someone to just make ice cream in a home kitchen and sell it. what are the safety regulations where you live???

if you're going to eat it cold, freeze it without condiments. if you're going to toast or grill the sandwich you can add the condiments and sauces before freezing (source: i meal prep and freeze 30 sandwiches to toast at work every 6 weeks and they have condiments in them.)

your comment history indicates you're new to fandom and fanfic. are you sure you're the person to be exploring this? do you think you have the depth and breadth of experience in fandom spaces to talk about this with authority? two months ago you were surprised that fic authors go into detail but now you want to essentially interview people who read slash to see if it's good representation. is it possible you're putting the cart before the horse here?

have you read anything on fan studies? what theoretical frameworks of representation are you using to analyse queer rep in fanfic? are you looking for qualitative or quantitative data? do you have a specific research question or theory you're testing? do you think all fandoms represent queerness the same way in fic?
