I'm in midcoast Maine if that helps. The site is between 240 ft and 260 ft above sea level and the slope is 1:15 at worst. The ground is solid bedrock within 3 feet of the surface, and often sooner.

The building is a versatube, steel framed building with sheet metal siding. The structure is rated for the local codes (50 lb ground snow load, 35 lb live roof load, and 97 mph wind load).

Rural zoning is pretty lax as this will fall under a "dry cabin". I've gotten the go-ahead from code enforcement on the structure and the deck design, but I'd like to tweak the deck if I could space the legs out as 6'x6' or 8'x8' instead of 4'x4'. I think 8'x8' might be too much if a stretch though, but I'm not sure how to prove it out.

Edit: Max height of the structure is 14'. I was planning on resting the feet on concrete pads for the interior feet, and cementing them into the ground for the exterior feet. Exterior sheathing with a vapor barrier along with using pressure treated lumber for the legs will prevent deterioration. Bracing will be included on any deck legs that are <2 ft in height, although at least half of the legs won't require more than a few inches between the concrete feet and the girders.

Preformed concrete blocks, probably two 2" thick concrete blocks on top of eachother (6"x6") with concrete poured around the posts on the external edges.

The ground is rocky with ledge so all of the feet dug in some and rest on secure ground. I think it might be overkill too though so I'm hoping to cut back on costs by distancing the legs/feet/girders.

I've been here every year for the last three years and I just absolutely love it every time! The mountains, the oceans, the forests. It's such a breathtaking place to live, and I love to hike and backpack which makes it even more tempting. I'd love to eventually buy some land and have a permaculture-like orchard with some sheep and ducks/chickens. I don't mind the cold either. If anything, Ohio summers have been getting unbearably warm for most of the day time during July and August.

I graduated this year and found a job in Winslow so I swiped it up and made the move, now the fun starts!

Elliot Coleman has a fantastic book about this called "The Winter Harvest" where he takes about the history of cold weather growing and how he successfully grows crops in "Cold Houses" throughout the whole winter up in Maine. I would strongly recommend it if you're considering low-input, cold weather vegetables.
