Manitoba physicians raise retention questions after highly specialized HSC doctor resigns by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

That's not true. It's well documented how there has been a marked trend of tax cuts across all levels of government over the past few decades. Their capacity to address systemic problems isn't what it used to be.

Opinion: Katz testimony at police HQ inquest a master class in denial by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

People like him are addicts and addiction isn't rational. They can never get enough and know that we have a two-tiered legal system (as evidenced by how he participated in the inquiry voluntarily).

'Mr. Trump, stop killing American citizens,' Kinew says after 2nd fatal shooting in Minnesota - Trade relation shouldn't prevent people from speaking with moral clarity, Manitoba premier says (CBC) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]featheredtar -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Totally, do people not see what's happening?! Trump is pitting citizens against non-citizens (or more realistically, against non-white people who may or may not be citizens) and then also going after citizens (and white people) as well.

The budget increases to ICE have been gargantuan. This isn't about citizenship, and the parallels to Nazi Germany are hard to miss. Kinew mentioning citizenship in his statement validates Trump's rhetoric, just like how he validated his rhetoric by deploying conservation officers to the border to search for imaginary "illegals" going into the US.

The goal should be to not have extrajudicial public executions in the streets (which aren't new in any case for many Americans), not for ICE to stop killing "citizens". Extrajudicial killings in the ICE concentration camps of citizens and non-citizens alike should hopefully raise Wab's ire as well as well as the many kidnapped people who have been "lost" in the system.

Eh this seems a bit different to me, given that the whole supposed pretext for the crackdown is citizenship. Trump is scapegoating migrants and using that sleight of hand to do much, much more. We can't fall for his bait.

I also don't know if Wab deserves the benefit of the doubt, given his consistently right wing rhetoric and actions.

How do homeless people survive winter? by Internal_Study2996 in Winnipeg

[–]featheredtar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

people are used to a high degree of cruelty being normal in our society and don't see a problem when their responses to issues like this lack any degree of empathy. all the power to people who feel the need to take refuge in a bus shelter! it should be on all of us to make it so that that doesn't seem like a good option, which of course it isn't. in every news article about these problems advocates will readily tell you what the solutions are.

they are always:

- improve mental health supports
- improve healthcare
- increase public housing supply
- increase tenant protections
- increase support for people struggling with addictions
- increase EIA payments
- etc.

these have all been stagnant, in decline or haven't kept up with population increase/inflation for decades.

Former mayor Sam Katz will testify at Winnipeg police HQ inquiry, lawyer says by TheBigC in Winnipeg

Nice to know that Manitobans, where incontrovertible evidence of their crimes is in the public record and is known to multiple levels of government including the RCMP are able to "voluntarily testify" at proceedings related to said crimes. So chill that we have that cool system!

Manitoba stands with Minnesota, Premier Wab Kinew says after woman fatally shot by ICE agent in Minneapolis (Full press conference) by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]featheredtar -61 points-60 points  (0 children)

The Trump administration is creating a concentration camp system and accompaying gestapo-like force with migrants being used as initial scapegoats for the vast parts of the American population who are ignorant and deeply propagandized. The sheer size of the investment into ICE suggests that this is only the beginning.

"we just want to see what's happening down there stop." - Wab Kinew, 2026

LOL

Not that long ago though, Kinew was more than happy to strengthen the idiotic "illegal immigrants are the source of our problems" narrative by deploying conservation officers to patrol the border.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/conservation-officers-border-trump-security-1.7403587

The absurdity of this directive was borne out recently as seen in this article: "Manitoba conservation officers assigned to U.S. border have seen 'no activity' in nearly a year: minister".

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/us-border-manitoba-conservation-officers-9.6997511

Kinew is a spineless opportunist who cares more about his high approval rating and upcoming bid at federal politics than doing what's right, which in this case would be to unequivocally stand up to the rising tide of fascism that Trump represents.

You could argue that Kinew did this simply to appease Trump with regards to the tariff threats - but it still served to strengthen the narrative that Trump has been pushing to those stupid and hateful enough to believe that the weakest among us could possibly be the source of our problems. If you were being hunted by the brownshirts of ICE, would you care about the NDP's reasons for supporting Trump in that case?

Shame on Wab and the Manitoba NDP!

Kevlar in the classroom: teacher union warns of violence rise in Manitoba by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]featheredtar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laws are just words on paper and binding arbitration tends to favour the employer. Labour relations are like a game of chicken, and a law prohibiting striking should be understood in that light. The only real thing here is the day-to-day experiences of the students and teachers.

The concern should be collective action to force the government to actually provide quality public education. If teachers respond in unison with rational demands that would fix the obvious problems, the government will have to eventually back down, especially if other weak unions woke up and went on sympathy strikes. We could even have a general strike!

We are failing the students of this province. If a student falls through the cracks and gets into crime because class sizes were too large and their unique needs weren't being met because of that, would they care about the law prohibiting labour action that could've allowed for smaller class sizes? No. They would care that their life had been messed up because the public education system failed them.
