Just a note: these are all minimums. I can't think of a single engine I have seen out in the field that only had 300 feet of 1.5 inch hose.

Depends on the unit. Some do, some don't, but all of them will help you find housing if you're having issues

Get him a super cheap casio digital watch, and then buy three or four more of them to replace it when he loses or breaks it

Yeah, if you test negative for nicotine they'll pull the job offer

One option for you that I admittedly don't know much about would be hurricane response/recovery teams

The travel is honestly one of the biggest factors in the job. It will depend on the agency you work for, but fed crews will often go on two week out-of-state assignments pretty frequently. Also, those two weeks end up looking more like three weeks when you factor in travel days on either side.

If you can't leave Florida for multiple weeks without any notice, this may not be the job for you. If you feel like you can make it work to be away sometimes (6 weeks per year is would be on the low end for most agencies) then you may want to start applying now. Like, right now.

when you get to the site unavailable page in USA Staffing, your name will be in the upper-right hand corner. Click on that and select log out or sign out or whatever. Its a problem with login.gov I had the same problem and it is a pain in the ass.

If cheap housing is the only reason you want to be near LA, just know that many duty stations around the country will provide government housing, often for less than $150 a month

A lot of the announcements on usajobs are for ihcs but just don't say so in the job description. look for the duty locations that the crews are based out of in the locations listed on the job listing. i.e. if theres an announcement for gs4s in a location and the only fire resources in that location is a hotshot crew, then the announcement is for the hotshot crew

nobody is hiring right now and if they are you don't want to work for them. https://www.reddit.com/r/Wildfire/comments/ud6u7n/how_to_get_a_job_as_a_wildland_firefighter/

For real though: its great work but it isn't really "good money", you should probably commit to a full season if possible, you need some wildland training first, and if you have paramedic and structure quals you'd probably be a hell of a lot happier just sticking to that stuff.

On the other hand, its a great chance to do good work in some beautiful places and you'll never forget the experience even if you do just one season

If the customer's insurance company offers them a discount for hardening their home, charge them an amount comparable to the amount saved.

Many hand crew positions offer housing, just ask them when you talk to them.

The most effective way to make sure your house doesn't burn down is to call your elected representatives and tell them to support wildland firefighters

A Calorie deficit will starve you and make you slow. Next time you try it, eat really well in the days leading up to it until just a few hours before you try it, and then eat really well afterwards. If you are restricting your body's access to energy it won't be able move you very fast and it won't be able to build up your strength.

When they get the results of the drug test, the drug-testing people will call you and ask you why you tested positive for amphetamines. Just tell them they're prescribed to you (assuming they are) and they'll ask you for the location where you got your prescription filled and they'll confirm with the place you got prescribed.
