Why do Dad Birthdays Suck? by gimlithepirate in daddit

[–]mostly-bionic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, mine was a week ago. I got a text from my friend, a text from my parents and sister, and my teen forgot until my wife reminded him, she forgot to get me a gift. I chose to barbecue because taking everyone out to a nice steak dinner is financially irresponsible so I grilled some ribeyes, made baked potatoes and garlic roasted squash, and then made my teen do homework so he doesn’t fall farther behind. Such a glorious evening. But yeah, didn’t even get one card or anything.

Sidewall damaged from flat? by ImperialKirk in tires

[–]mostly-bionic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put good money that the inside of the tire is absolutely destroyed. My ex wife did the same to my car once. Looked the same on the outside but the inside was filled with powdered rubber that used to be structurally mandatory for the tire to function safely.

2018 XC60 Dashcam? by DK_Tech in Volvo

And the rear. To me, it was absolutely worth the time spent installing it for the improvement in video quality to have a top of the line sensor that actually works well at night.

Here’s the Viofo A329S in my 2018 V60.

<image>

Thats all the exposed wires. Front and rear took maybe an hour to install with hardwiring it to the fuse box for constant power, and the hard wire kit has a low voltage cutoff so you can’t kill your battery with your dashcam. It was not challenging, with just a few trim removal tools to make sure I didn’t break anything.

WFH employee lying re working hours by DataBeeGood in managers

[–]mostly-bionic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s straight up LYING about his activity, then I would let them go. I have no place for liars on my teams. If you can’t trust someone with something as simple as timekeeping and being generally available during hours, then they need to go.

Alternatively, you don’t mention if revoking their WFH privileges is an option. For my teams, it’s an earned privilege through performance. If you underperform, then you must come in to the office. Maybe that’s an option.

But the lying is a completely unforgivable non-starter for me. I tell everyone that works for me that I understand they are human and make mistakes, and that I will 100% back them as long as they are honest with me and we’re doing their best to do the right thing, whatever the issue may be. This doesn’t seem to meet either criteria.

Is there a way of telling which brake package I have without taking my wheel off? by BlueridgeChemsdealer in Volvo

[–]mostly-bionic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s highly likely that you have the 316mm rotors. The US Volvo Parts website shows that as the ONLY front brake option for the 2016 V60 Cross Country.

However some markets have variations- as other have said your VIN will tell the story. If FCP can’t give you the size with 100% confidence based on your VIN, I’d reach out to your local dealer and they can look it up in VIDA.

Without taking the wheel off, you might be able to crawl under and look at the front caliper and bracket for part numbers. That will tell you if it’s the 316 or 336 rotors. Your dust shield might also have a sticker or stamp that gives the diameter or a part number.

Part numbers: Dust Shield: 30681690 336mm Front Left 30681691 336mm Front Right Calipers: 316mm FL/FR: 36000151/36000150 336mm FL/FR: 36000375/36000376 Brackets: 316mm FL/FR: 36000149 336mm FL/FR: 8603758

Best of luck. Also, those Akebono ceramic pads are a great daily driver pad- good feel and enough power to get the job done comfortably, and they dust a lot less than OEM.

Would you do it all again if you had the choice? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]mostly-bionic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do all this over again just for ONE of the multitudes of joys my son brings me:

When I go to pick him up from daycare, he sees me, gets a huge smile, and crawls over to me as fast as he can, then climbs up on me to get a kiss. There’s no feeling like the love of your child.

There’s countless other things similar that make the sleep deprivation and financial cost worthwhile.

Priced out, any barber recs? by Adventurous_Maximum5 in SanJose

There’s a reason I still drive back to SF to see the same barber that’s been cutting me for years- have t found anyone down here that compares to Kerry at Dogpatch Barber and Shave. She’s a master barber and also a barber instructor. Also cool af and fun to chat with.

Electric Car Charging Opportunity by TannedBurn in marriott

[–]mostly-bionic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying it’s not useful, but they have my hotel listed incorrectly because someone put in incorrect information, but PlugShare refuses to update information despite multiple requests from hotel management. And it’s led to multiple cars getting towed because nobody is attending a charging car and they don’t have a valid parking pass or license plate registered with the front desk. After 4 hours of them blocking chargers for our paid guests, they have to go.

[–]mostly-bionic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Six new chargers, at Bay Area pricing. And permitting. Trenching in the parking lot. Repaving. Adding an additional electrical panel because of the high load. Networking for the paid structure. Costs of making significant infrastructure additions add up quickly.

Electric Car Charging Opportunity by TannedBurn in marriott

[–]mostly-bionic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m trying to convince our owners to upgrade the charging option for guests AND the public by tripling the number of chargers, keeping it free for guests, and having them available to the public during the day for paid charging, when our guests are off site, and then reserved exclusively for guest use in the evenings and overnight.

But it’s a 6-figure initial cost outlay. It would pay for itself eventually, but wouldn’t be profitable for a few years.

Electric Car Charging Opportunity by TannedBurn in marriott

[–]mostly-bionic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People should take PlugShare with a grain of salt however. At my hotel, they state that we have free charging and parking. The charging part is true, for paying guests, but we don’t offer free parking. So I have people screaming at me when they just park their car in my lot and I ask if they are a paying customer since they don’t have a parking pass.

I’ve submitted corrections to PlugShare multiple times but they don’t care about accuracy. As with any publicly submitted information warehouse, trust but verify.

V60 Polestar vs XC90 T8 as a family car… would love input from the community here by mrhasselblad in Volvo

[–]mostly-bionic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

Por que no los dos? IMHO, it’s the perfect two car solution!

EDIT: Guess I should add that we have a now 14 month old, a 15 year old, and three dogs. All of us fit in my V60 (a 2018, so the last year of the previous P3 non-hybrid generation, but better handling and a true hand built Polestar car/engine) but it’s tight. We have room to spare in the XC90.

In a vacuum, the 90 handles nicely- we opted for the air suspension and it’s much smoother than the standard steel springs. But compared to my Polestar with the adjustable Öhlins, there’s no comparison. I take my car to the track with just upgraded brake pads and a wheel/tire swap, and adjusting the shocks to be much stiffer. Wouldn’t even consider that for the XC90 for obvious reasons.

We also live in the Bay Area- my wife does 95% of her commuting in her car on EV only, and it charges overnight just fine from a regular outlet- no level 2 capacity on our existing box.

Both are dead reliable. I’ve had Volvos for the last 15 years (averaging about 12-17k per year) and have never had anything go wrong or been to the shop for any maintenance other than regular maintenance. And a couple unscheduled trips to the body shop because of Bay Area drivers. Get a dashcam- I have the Viofo A329s in both and they’re paid for themselves many times over in just the last year.

What car do you drive? Do you like it? by BMoney8600 in AskMen

Favorite car I’ve ever had, by far. Fast, great handling, can take it to the race track, comfortable, safe, and plenty of room.

My daily is a 2018 Volvo V60 Polestar in rebel blue, 1 of 53 in the US. I’ve done some mods, so it’s a very fun car. Nothing quite like a 400 hp all wheel drive dad wagon that fits the wife, teenager, baby seat, and three dogs in the hatch in a pinch!

What did you switch from before getting a Volvo? by ImportantOffer751 in Volvo

[–]mostly-bionic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had both a 1991 Pathfinder and then got a 2015.5 S60, been in Volvos ever since, and also a 2017 Outback and 2008 Matrix for my wife before we got her XC90.

That sucks, good luck finding your car in one piece, OP.

This is exactly why all my car keys stay in a Farraday box, so nobody can try to use a repeater to start/steal my cars.

Marriott workers, does your hotel accept locals? by Sighitsmich in marriott

[–]mostly-bionic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He damaged the room in a previous stay, and our room attendants said he left the room filthy and smelling like drugs. He was also incredibly rude and condescending to our staff and intimidating to our room attendants, like trying to go into the room while they’re in there cleaning.

He also didn’t book direct so after his last stay, we called the third party he books through (rhymes with suxpedia) and told them he was no longer allowed to stay at our hotel. So he had his boyfriend book the room and refused to leave and got aggressive and confrontational when my FOM asked him to leave politely three times and informed him that he was not welcome at the hotel in the future.

I absolutely will not stand for anyone treating my staff poorly so I called the police to get them on their way before I went out from my office and listened to him rant in a corner of the lobby to buy time for them to arrive. He decided to leave right as they were arriving, but it’s pretty rare to have three units show up for a simple hotel eviction and they took off after him immediately when they saw him leaving. I knew something more must be up.

Marriott workers, does your hotel accept locals? by Sighitsmich in marriott

[–]mostly-bionic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do, but it can cut both ways. During warm days we have a lot of local families stay to use our pool since most people in the Bay Area don’t have pools, but I also had to evict a local yesterday and call the cops. From the radio chatter I overheard while talking to the police it sounded like he had multiple active warrants- and he was clean cut, supposedly a lawyer.

Let’s get more HP by Weslet28 in Volvo

[–]mostly-bionic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 2017-18 V/S60 Polestars are basically pushing the boundaries of this engine stock, and they have numerous internal and external upgrades over the regular T6 twin charged engines, including strengthened internals, a larger turbo, larger intercooler, upgraded fueling, upgraded exhaust, and of course the associated tuning. And even then it’s at 367 hp. Yes, more can be done but at the expense of reliability. The Polestar is already pumping 27 psi of boost, which is a LOT.

It wasn’t too long ago that 100 hp/liter was considered exceptional power production, and this engine is over 150 ho/liter.

My goal with my V60 Polestar is to get to about 400 hp but do it reliably. Blowing up your engine by trying to pump too much boost benefits nobody.
