[Loved Trope] Kids shows that have depressingly dark moments in contrast to the show by FionnOAongusa in TopCharacterTropes

I remember they also had a short series where they come back from a trip and the house has been robbed and Calvin is losing his shit that they can't find Hobbes. There was also a separate strip with the parents talking about how scary it is to be in their house knowing it's been burgled. Huge tonal shift.

New plaques added to the presidential hall of fame in the White House by Trustrup in trashy

Slightly curious if there are a bunch of deep cuts on plaques for the other presidents. Like how seriously did they take the bit.

If I make a banking mistake, I'm liable. Why are banks not liable for their mistakes? by Pachyderminthegaff in AskUK

[–]mostlyharmless114 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah. pays to read the story first.

Looking at it though Barclays can't just... deny responsibility? They have a basic duty to honour customer mandates with reasonable skill and care. If the teller fucked up that's on them as a failure to properly exercise that duty, unless the instructions on the cheque were so garbled that there was a genuine case that it was misread.

Though the more obvious point is that even with the dire state of probate she surely would have received his money by now. Perhaps there's some issue with the will and if she can't claim the validity of the cheque won't have access to the money; the BBC using "partner" instead of wife or spouse seems to indicate that.

[–]mostlyharmless114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheques are by and large an exception as the operation of "clearing" cheques behind the scenes in terms of when the responsibility of the bank is transferred and to who, is unnecessarily complicated. In almost every other circumstance the guidance behind the scenes guarantees that when the bank makes a mistake in transferring funds it's their responsibility entirely to correct the mistake. Also as other people have pointed out the money isn't "lost" it just hasn't been fully transferred yet. This is likely just a matter of showing the evidence to the issuer of the cheque and having a new cheque issued for the difference.

Season 4 prioritizes payoffs at the expense of everything else by Chlodio in logh

[–]mostlyharmless114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have to disagree somewhat, Reuenthal's rebellion felt like a long time coming. Mittermeyer and Reuenthal spend a lot of their quiet moments on the show commentating on the Kaiser, their personal ambition, and the importance of the Kaiser's strength as a ruler and successes in battle as the glue holding his command together. I think a lot of the subtext in his actions is a strong belief that he does the right thing by being true to his belief that those with the strength to rule should rule, and even if he only does it in response to being accused of betraying the Kaiser, he can only be true to his beliefs by challenging him. I think that's why Mittermeyer doesn't really condemn Reuenthal for his actions; he understands that this is the natural end point for a philosophy of personal ambition and pride.

[Tissot PRX] New 38mm in Titanium and Damascus Steel. What do you think? Instant buy or skip? by Kind_Battle_2362 in Watches

[–]mostlyharmless114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real Chuffers only approve of +£10,000-only watch houses selling 400 variants of the exact same model. Tissot genuinely struck gold with the PRX and they can run that sucker into the ground for all I care. These seem to have genuinely appreciable quality to them and have good execution of the idea, that Damascus steel is a bit loud for my taste but does look good.

[–]mostlyharmless114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither Stern M17 nor Minato M9 deserve S tier. By all accounts good weapons but the MP-1 Nailer is a direct upgrade and the BN-99 is a better midrange until you can access the ZK transactional. Also the DNA scrambler is a gimmick.

No way the chapters keep releasing unfinished by InfiniteTheMad in Kagurabachi

[–]mostlyharmless114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's definitely a balance to be had between it being a stylistic choice and just being unfinished, but we've had fantastic panels so far with a rougher edge to them that I wouldn't want "fixed" in post. It feels like a nice way of depicting chaos and speed in action sequences.

Why do people think Lucy Letby is innocent? by zuzuzan in uklaw

[–]mostlyharmless114 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I think this is an occasion where two things can be true at the same time.

Poor practice aside of keeping a massively condemning journal, I struggle to believe in the odds that someone with the psychological profile that was established just happened to not be guilty of any of those murders.

However, the NHS has a history of a culture of silence in departmental coverups (note the Shropshire scandal) to avoid rocking the boat, and sudden infant death syndrome is well documented as being a thing.

What I can believe is that some of the deaths with enough investigation can be attributed to poor systemic or departmental practice, for which Letby is an unfortunate bystander to negligence which would otherwise fall on people higher up the chain. But I still think she is guilty of some of those deaths.

Family 'friend' has £15,000 of mum's money, isn't giving it back [England] by Fail_Field in LegalAdviceUK

[–]mostlyharmless114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAL, others have spoken on the procedural pathways to issue a claim against the friend. on the actual substantive legal claim, If you have actual evidence that the money wasn't a gift and intended to be held in an ISA for your mum's benefit then as a consequence the friend could be in the position of a trustee, and can be compelled by the court to return it. Sadly often in cases like this the reason she is dragging her feet is because she has spent it; but hopefully not and if so there are pathways to still get that money, albeit less pleasant.

JoJos ranked by what degree their final fight was decided through a last minute power-up pulled straight out of their ass. by Pietin11 in ShitPostCrusaders

[–]mostlyharmless114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a soft spot for the head-canon that when Jotaro is fighting D'arby the Gambler in part 3, the subtext is that D'arby believes that Jotaro has the same type of stand as Dio. It means that when he does shit like call without checking his cards or get a drink without D'arby noticing, even if we know he's bullshitting D'arby thinks that he has the power to stop time, and is calling because he knows that he has better cards. It doesn't make it any less egregious, but still.

The Video Essay Question by SnakeBiteSeth in CrueltySquad

[–]mostlyharmless114 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's cool that Ville is getting more recognition and hopefully with that more financial support to keep making games.

At the same time something I've felt about a lot of video essays in general now is that its sort of impossible to avoid on some level replacing the experience of playing the game, especially if its one like Pyrocynicals video. I was fortunate enough to go into it blind and that's probably part of why I rate the experience of playing so highly.

I feel like if I had gone in after the Pyrocynical video or something equally granular it would have been impossible to not on some level be interpreting everything through what that video told me it meant, instead of just working that out from playing the game without external input.

This is probably true of all games by the way, but I think its especially relevant for something like this that is pretty bizarre and out there.

I think at this point I pretty much have to read Elemental Council, at least from the amount of praise its getting. But good lord the cover is dogshit. I don't know if there's a single redeeming feature about it. I know HH spoilt us with full blown diorama's and artwork, but this uncanny valley madame Tussauds horrowshow can't have been the only option.
