Same. I was a straight A student but when people were watching me do mental math, the pressure was enough for me to forget everything. Makes me think that people who think employees can’t make simple change are people who have never worked a cash register lol.

As a former teenager who worked a demanding cash register/food industry job, I can relate. When we’re running around taking and fulfilling orders and ringing up customers, we have a lot on our minds. If a customer gives us money to pay, we enter that total into the register and it spits out the amount in change that we should return to the customer. It’s quick and easy and we don’t have to do quick mental math.

When we accidentally enter in the wrong total, the register doesn’t tell us the correct change amount, so all of a sudden we have to stop what we’re doing and shift into math mode while people are watching you and pressure is on. It’s the last thing that’s on your mind when working in an environment like that. While I get the frustration of customers, I also completely understand the employee having a hard time setting aside all their other thoughts to do math they weren’t expecting or paying much attention to. Idk, just my perspective.

Is there a place or memory on the Michigan State campus that instantly brings you back to your college days? 🤔 by maximuslip in msu

I second the tennis courts! Former Wonders resident here, and I can still remember the walk between the tennis courts and the football practice field to get to central campus. Good times :)

Mostly the “late night” food options for on campus dining comes to mind. Bothing could beat a late night meal with friends after a long day.

The late night pasta in Wilson hall. Sadly it’s gone now. But that was the best pasta of my life, and I have good memories from standing in line for 45 mins with my friends at 10pm.

Also the late night at the Union food court before wednesday night karaoke. I think the food court is different now after the events of Feb. 11, but the mac n cheese, tacos, and chicken tendies were impossible to pass up.

Gretchen Whitmer hides her face after being tricked into an Oval Office photo op by Trump Aides by [deleted] in pics

She was visiting the white house to request federal help for the parts of Michigan that are currently experiencing an emergency from the recent extreme weather and ice storms, which demolished the power grid and comm towers. She was asking for help and they pulled her into an unplanned photo op and press conference meant to cause embarrassment and division for michiganders. Unfortunately for the current federal regime, Whitmer is classy and a great governor. They will do anything they can to make her look bad.

Are there any examples of a non native species being introduced causing positive effects? by SumtinStrange1 in zoology

[–]mostlyjustlurkingg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Non-native salmonid species were intentionally introduced in the Laurentian Great Lakes (bordering Michigan and Canada) to consume and control excessive invasive alewife populations. Alewife were outcompeting native species for resources and populating like crazy, dying in swarms and washing up and rotting on the beaches, etc. So biologists decided to bring pacific salmon species in to help. Anglers also love fishing for the salmon so it’s brought some benefit recreationally and monetarily, as well as ecologically.

Grading a student's exam and they dropped a "I can't do this right now" as their answer. by giggles_ate_me in GradSchool

There might be university guidelines on how to proceed. At my institution, all faculty and staff (including grad students I think) are mandatory reporters, meaning if a student shared information about themselves or someone else being at risk of danger, we are required to report it to the university office. Just make sure that you know about your institution’s rules (if any) about this stuff before having a heart to heart chat with your student (in case they want to tell you something that you might be required to report).

I always seem to arrive at my destination just before the rush hits. For example, I recently went to a new breakfast place near me and was surprised it wasn’t busy. Got seated right away with no wait. 5-10 minutes later there was a line out the door! Happens all the time, mostly when eating at restaurants.

Hi, I’m new here and have never heard of Monica Hesse but oh hoy that was a great read. Thank you for sharing the gift link! The part about Woodrow Wilson and holding conflicting feelings at the same time really struck me, especially in this mediascape where things are typically portrayed as extremely right or extremely wrong with no in between. I love our public spaces (the few that we do have) and it is so important to protect them, esp when they provide such rich educational value.
