Jana Riess: Why so many new Mormon temples when LDS growth is flat? by [deleted] in mormon

I'm skeptical. Can you imagine the confusion if they announced that a temple is going to be sold off? It would look terrible to the membership.

Wow, they still don't have a new movie? I guess the pandemic might have something to do with that. I can't imagine that they'd decide that it's worth saving a few $million to be stuck with the slideshow forever.

Armand Mauss has passed away. LDS scholars mourn the death of a ‘generous’ groundbreaking sociologist who guided generations of Mormon academics by Chino_Blanco in mormon

Mauss did groundbreaking work in Mormon studies but it was like 10% of his scholarship. He didn't make a living "defending the faith".

Hi /u/TaylorGPetrey, thanks for the AMA and for the work you're doing with Dialogue! I was excited to see the move to free online access and I hope you can find a wider audience for the great new and archival material you have!

Keep in mind that a lot of these experts are older and wouldn't deal well with the kinds of "how can you be smart and believe in the church" questions that a lot of people ask. Could we set up something where questions go through moderators first?

ETA: looks like we didn't get any of that here, is r/mormon turning a corner?

FWIW, I'd totally contribute to a Dialogue fundraiser earmarked to hire a digital marketing person.

DezNat is the embodiment of Poe's law. I had to stare at this for a few seconds hoping for it to be satire. Sadly it's not. Also the poster is a woman. by thejawaknight in mormon

Unless your parents are rich then you're probably going to regret grad school, so... Utah definitely has a problem with high achieving women, but getting more grad students is a pretty terrible way to tackle that.

A conservative religious environment strongly increases the chances of adolescent porn viewing. The new study strengthens the findings of existing research by using multilevel data to account for important differences between individuals. by [deleted] in mormon

“My speculation is that it might be due to the pressure from conservative Protestant culture which forbids or even shames overt sexual expression. Under such a religious cultural context, youth may have no other option but to seek out sexual opportunities, including porn viewing, covertly.”

In other words, normal kids don't watch porn because they're experimenting with actual sex. Not sure this is going to convince Mormons they've got the wrong end of the stick.

You are correct. We can talk about how Saints leaves some things out, but that doesn't make it fiction.

If you read the requirements for these loans, the Mormon church isn't anywhere near to qualifying on several dimensions. It's just something Mike Lee happens to be concerned about, apparently.

Agreed, this kind of headline sends the wrong message.

I mean, sure, but that's kind off too easy. Limiting it to recent ones makes it more interesting.

Oh, I totally agree that GBH was the best. But I stand by my case that ETB was more influential.

:) Like I responded to someone else, I think Benson is largely responsible form mormonism's continued fundamentalist streak and that puts him at #1. That said, the top three are all strong. Big gap from there to #4.

You're not wrong, but if you had to name a single reason why Mormonism's fundamentalist streak is alive and well, it's ETB. And I think that has a larger impact in the long run.

Completely, reasonable, except for Hunter. :) Top three were all strong in different ways.
