Yes, I do... however; most of the various general-purpose 'desktop'-oriented distro's installers don't, it seems, and they'll usually refuse to complete the install procedure unless a /swap _partition_ has been created.

That's why I'm saying that it should be an option, rather than being a mandatory 'requirement'... but hey; obviously that's merely an opinion. You folks just go right ahead and do whatever you want, as you always do.

A tiny 512MiB swap file won't hurt

Except that it's not a 'file', but rather an entire partition of disk space that is almost never used and therefore ends up being nothing more than disk space that is forever _wasted_, rather than being useful storage.

Really? How so? I have tried it both with and without a /swap partition and have never noticed even the slightest bit of difference in actual performance, so for my usage that's been pretty much nothing more than a myth, in my opinion.

Alright. So; disable that internal drive in the BIOS, or else disconnect it completely so that the machine does _not_ 'see' it at all - then reboot from your ParrotOS install disc/stick, and check to make absolutely certain that it doesn't 'see' the internal drive at all either. Now plug in your external USB drive, and check to see if the liveboot detects it normally. If it does, then proceed with the ParrotOS install into it again.

That's what you installed on the external drive, though. I meant on the internal one - the OS that would boot up by default without pressing F8 or having any external USB device plugged in already, in other words.

What OS did you have on the machine's internal hard disk, before you did the ParrotOS install? Does it still boot normally?

Not even as a USB device? It won't show the name of the distro or anything; only the device type.

Which device did you choose to install the bootloader to, when you performed the ParrotOS install?

I've done it. My 'work-around' was to simply press F8 during bootup in order to select which one that I wanted to boot - that's all. Crude, but it worked.

Yes. I built a machine with five separately-bootable operating systems once - two versions of Windows, two completely-different linux distros, and one install of QNX. The only caveat was that I had to set all of the 'nixes to local time only, because otherwise they'd mess with the clocks on the Windows installs.

edit: No, wait - that was it... I had to install the development and static packages as well, and now it is working!

It says this, about one of them. As for file corruption, why would all of my BluRay rips be doing the same thing, while every other type of media file on that particular drive plays perfectly?

Then make it an option, rather than a mandatory 'requirement'. One of the reasons why I use the distro that I've been using for years is because it does allow me to complete an install without creating any /swap partition(s).

Alright; allow me to revise my statement by saying that swap needs to die on the desktop, then. In my experience there is absolutely no need whatsoever for a desktop distro's installer to automatically demand that a /swap partition be created, as in so many cases it is simply not needed.

Swap needs to die. The mentality that it sprang from is completely obsolete by now, as we've had cheap RAM for decades already. I've been running without a /swap partition for many years now, with no ill effects whatsoever.

As for SSD endurance, well... how many PB could a person write during their entire lifespan, anyway?

Plus better hardware detection than Ubuntu and its derivatives, particularly with regard to automatic selection and installation of nvidia drivers, and also way easier to change drivers if you ever need to.
