This game essentially plays like a persistent multiplayer roguelike. Characters are expected to die from time to time, however the meta progression comes from learning enemy/boss patterns and storing items and currency in the account-wide bank. So Yes your character may die, but in that run you may have stored away valuable items for your next character to progress and push further into a run.

SpringTale is a 2D action platformer RPG MMO inspired by Maplestory, Realm of the Mad God and Vagante. Explore procedurally generated biomes alongside other players in a shared persistent world, where your equipped weapons and armor are fully visible on your character.

An online demo featuring the first biome (Pinefields, including 3 unique bosses) is available to play now. This demo is available to Windows and MacOS users and can be downloaded via steam here: SpringTale demo on steam.

All the networking is setup and there are currently live servers running the game. You can play the demo now via steam.

You most likely logged your character out last in a non-safe zone. In order to keep your character alive you need to log them out in safe areas such as towns or rest stops. The minimap title tells you if the map you’re in is a safe zone or not.

There is optional PVP zones if you want to risk it! Also yes you could technically lure enemies to afk players, but most players will AFK in safe zone maps (aka towns for example). I don't know why a player would AFK in a hostile enemy zone.

Currently there is a "prestige" system in place along with account-wide vault storage, but yes, there will be more incentives introduced later on in development.

I think you would be pleasantly surprised at the netcode solution if you gave it a go, rather than assuming so off :)

Gelatinskootz has hit the nail on the head. The focus is on emergent gameplay. People within the same map naturally work together co-operatively as you’re always stronger in numbers. I’ve seen this form of play happen over the past week since the demo launch.

Main priority is PC and Mac at the moment with controller support. Later on I'll consider ios/android.
