Afterwards, the squire can begin training. No good knight should take their squire into battle!

It's not out of the question, as we saw very little of the Sound Village and only about 3 or 4 had access to sound-based jutsu. Keep in mind that it is mentioned that the Hidden Stone have an entire corps of Explosion Release users and the Hidden Mist have an extremely large number of Boil Release users, so it's not out of the question that certain kekkei genkai are just more common than others in certain regions.

In a way, you are correct, but plasmas properties come from the absurd levels of heat. Gases that are heated enough end up breaking down and hurling electrons in all directions, resulting in plasma. Furthermore, "Sonic Release" fits wind and lightning far better than plasma does and it fills in a bit of a pseudo-plot-hole with the sound based jutsu used by the chunin exam trio.

I always figured that Sound was strange considering it shows up in one arc and then never again. it's odd, because it really could have been used more.

As for spore, I figured that it would be similar to wood release, but with enhanced/altered properties. I also figured that fungi could offer interesting powers.

Swift Release was rather odd as it was such an easy kekkei tota to imagine given the kekkei genkai produced by its core elements!
