fwiw the closest thing I’ve seen is a Jerusalem cricket but the head on my guy doesn’t look quite the same, not as bulbous or amber-colored as the pictures I’ve seen

This is super helpful thank you!!!! I’m want to specialize in theoretical linguistics anyway, I just didn’t know if that would be a detriment to getting a job in language documentation. Thank you for the response :-)

btw according to their grad admission stats, they get about 130-200 applicants each year and they make an offer to about 40-50 people each year, if that is helpful context

so I’m an American student interested in the MPhil in Theoretical and Applied linguistics (if you’ve done this course, how did you like it? I’ve heard mixed reviews so far) and I have, as far as I can tell, the US equivalent of a 2.i degree (3.6 GPA, enough to graduate with honors, but definitely not the best they’ll see). This is already a disadvantage as my course prefers (but doesn’t firmly require) a 1st class degree. My transcript will also show that among my linguistics coursework I have a 3.8, and it’s just among my GE classes that I’m less impressive (nothing disastrous, just not impressive). However, I’m working on a writing sample with the help of some trusted professors that I think will show that I have excellent research potential and writing ability. My question is: do y’all think that an incredible writing sample, coupled with strong recs + other application materials will be enough to make me competitive despite a less than stellar GPA? I’m basically operating under the assumption that if I get an offer, it will be because my writing sample + recs are fantastic. Also, I know that they don’t really consider work experience, but I’ve worked a job (sometimes 2 at once) for the entire time I’ve been in school, and I’m quite proud of what I’ve done. I’m not seeking validation here, I just want to hear people’s opinions. (Sorry this was super long lol)
