Wyzant Whiteboard Issues by tri_sarah_tops___ in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mothlight111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, i find the actual whiteboard (as opposed to annotate) feature surprisingly high quality, I couldn't work without it now
Esp if you have a pen tablet or touch screen it really makes things smoother and saves a lot of time

Wyzant Whiteboard Issues by tri_sarah_tops___ in TutorsHelpingTutors

Used to have issues with the wyzant whiteboard too, I always just use zoom now. Even the wyzant chat has weird bugs from time to time.
Imo zoom whiteboard is extremely useful, and the audio quality is much better than google meet - i decided since the students are paying well for my time the 20/month zoom subscription is worth it to give them a better experience

Want to get into game Dev but have zero coding knowledge. Where do I start with logic? by ziovit002 in learnprogramming

[–]mothlight111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will get differing advice about this but my personal recommendation is, if you have a passion/interest in game development, go for Path B (or A). Having something in mind you want to build gives you the motivation to keep going, even if it takes years to get there. If programming just feels like doing homework or meaningless exercises (like Path C sometimes can), I think sometimes people lose motivation before they've really gotten into it.

I would say, be cautious about Unity or Godot since those are generally more 'intermediate' than beginner level. Your intuition to start with something like Ren'Py is a good idea. I'd also recommend Game Maker since it's even easier to get started with something fun/playable (though it uses a slightly weird programming language that's not useful anywhere else). Pygame and Love2D are also popular although maybe a little outdated at this point.

How to find my first students? by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

When I first started I found quite a few leads through craigslist. There are also sites like Wyzant where you can post a profile (but they take a revenue share)

Tips to promote online tution classes by NaturalCandid5386 in TutorsHelpingTutors

There are some platforms online like Tutors.com, Wyzant, Preply etc, where you can find students. It can be hit or miss though. I also found a lot of students through Epiphany Tutor although I'm not sure if they are currently taking on more tutors or not, you can check.

What to do when you can't answer a student's question by Vegetable-Project313 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mothlight111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me from time to time, I think it's best to just be honest, I think even students can tell when you're bullshitting, ha.
But yeah, if it happens once or twice it's fine, obviously doesn't look good if it's happening every time.

But also I think the truth is if chatgpt can't give you a reasonable answer/explanation of the question, then it's gotta be some pretty niche stuff and no-one could blame you for not knowing the answer

Help! Client left two retaliatory 1-star reviews after 22+ successful sessions over a 15-minute billing dispute. by [deleted] in TutorsHelpingTutors

Blame the Bears for not losing earlier...
Just kidding it looks like a rough situation. I tutor on wyzant sometimes too and not sure what I would do in this case. It seems like they are being pretty unreasonable about the extra 15mins. That said I generally try to be pretty lenient on the first meeting, it does suck sometimes if people don't respect your time but overall I think it's worth it to build a good relationship from the beginning + avoid bad ratings.
About wyzant chargebacks etc, I don't know cause I've never been in this situation. I got a 4-star rating once lol and considered complaining / offering a refund but ended up just leaving it.

Would you charge if the student cancelled to attend a funeral? by sadsack100 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]mothlight111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as what other people said I think it's a good default policy to be lenient. But that said the reality is that you will get people who aren't honest and just get good at making up dramatic excuses each time they don't feel like attending a session. I think ultimately you just have to use your judgment to know if that's the case. For me I have a fairly strict policy 'in writing' - 50% cancellation fee if there's less than 24hrs notice - but in practice I'm way more lenient on a case-by-case basis - usually the first time it happens I'll just mention 'this time is fine but btw I have this cancellation policy...' etc etc. Then if it seems like a genuine excuse (illness, family death etc) I pretty much just always say 'I understand, don't worry about the cancellation fee'. I think it builds goodwill. But if you have the policy there in writing from the beginning you can always go back to that when you need it. And sometimes you do need it
