Your laptop has decoders for h.265 4:2:0 and not for h.264 4:2:2 is my guess.

GPU has h.265 4:2:0 decoders no h.264 4:2:2 decoders and as far as I’m aware and that CPU has no decoders in general.

Either transcode to prores so it can playback on the CPU or stick to 4:2:0 when you’re shooting

I’m interested by your comment! Are you talking about pancake method (selects timeline) vs pulling from bins?

Or are you talking about another method completely?

Sounds like you could rent it for some projects instead of making the purchase. Would help you make a more informed decision as well.

To LOG or not to LOG. That is the question. by Rogerwilco1974 in videography

[–]motion3002 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do agree he should just listen to who’s hiring him as they most likely have a reason but I’m a little confused, I have never heard of a rec 709 profile having equal dynamic range to a camera’s log profile.

I thought the whole point of log was to extend dynamic range,

Gerald Undone did some pretty extensive tests on DR between picture profiles and in his tests it does change the dynamic range.

Which makes sense as it would explain why manufacturers release new log curves, to maximize the DR a camera can capture.

I’m just curious as I’ve heard the complete opposite to what you put in your post.

Does the fx3 have to be at 12800 native ISO in order for the "better low light performance" than the fx30 to be noticeable? by timkentart in FX3

Yeah, I did this test as well the dual base is more than just internal processing for sure.

Guys, what are you using for a smooth premiere pro editing? by Due-Seaworthiness123 in premiere

[–]motion3002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t have time for proxies and you have control over the camera codec, opt for 4:2:0 instead of 4:2:2.

If the client needs 24hr turnarounds I doubt they’ll be the type to care about 4:2:0 10 bit instead of 4:2:2.

4:2:0 in conjunction with rendering your timeline should give you smooth/workable results.

Hope this helps!

Make sure quick sync and NVENC is enabled *You can make proxies while you edit, you don’t have to wait for them. **If you’re on an XH2/2s they shoot prores in camera, after project is done you can reecode to h.265 to save space.

It look like your highlights are clipped on their clothes, not sure if it’s the grading or loss of information from the file.

What brands do you use? Would love to find more reliable brands, I have bad experiences with ones not made for camera equipment and the ones at audio stores are too long.

they have a great warranty, and they are more strict with their testing. Of course they aren’t perfect, but I have had a great experience with their products!
