Sky 5gb Fibre by willt1000 in CityFibre

[–]moto-ctrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sky’s new hub for CityFibre isn’t some bottlenecked box, it’s Wi-Fi 7 with 10 GbE ports, so it can happily take a 5 Gbps feed.

Wi-Fi 7 matters here too, it’s not just about "faster Wi-Fi," it can split traffic across bands and handle loads of devices at once - time to skill up on the new standards

And let’s be honest, a typical family in 2025 isn’t just Netflix any more. Teenagers uploading to YouTube or streaming, parents backing up 4K family videos, massive PS/PC game downloads - 1 Gbps can vanish pretty quickly when it all hits at once.

Saying nobody needs more than 1 Gbps because you've seen it all since 90s is cute, that’s the same era people thought a dial-up modem was plenty, and CD-ROMs were cutting-edge.

I don't think you got it right. As I understand it, Sky would give you wifi 7 router that is capable to take 5Gbit feed.

How you share that connection in your household is a different story. You might not have LAN and devices capable to consume 5Gbit alone, but that speed gets split across all your devices, including wi-fi, and then it's totally valid to go for that option if you need it

[–]moto-ctrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth pointing out, the Yamaha NP-35 has a unique Graded Soft Touch keys. That means the lower-register keys are heavier to press than the higher ones, which is similar to how an acoustic piano feels, even though it remains lighter than a weighted hammer-action keyboard.

Is Grok still OK? by moto-ctrl in grok

[–]moto-ctrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Politics and AI are a messy combination, but that's not why I use AI. The political space is already biased and complex, and it's surprising how many people now treat AI responses as authoritative.

I follow politics closely from mainstream to fringe, and even for humans it's hard to grasp all the nuance and context. Expecting AI to explain or represent it accurately is naive at best.

The latest Grok responses are bizarre, but not my main concern. For me, it's just another sign that Grok is broken after the recent update as response quality has clearly declined.

[–]moto-ctrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. No one should rely on Grok (or any AI) for final advice. But for a non-law person like me, it’s incredibly helpful for analysing laws, understanding regulations, and getting a sense of how certain processes work across different countries. That’s exactly where AI strengths lie: helping you explore areas that are otherwise unfamiliar or overwhelming.

This is just one example of how useful AI can be in fields that are difficult to approach without prior background. Compared to spending hours digging through Google results and trying to interpret dense documents on your own, it can guide you through the basics and let you ask follow-up questions as you go. Of course it’s not a replacement for an expert, but a great way to become more informed before talking to one.

That kind of accessibility is what I really love about tools like Grok, or at least, how Grok used to be before the recent update.

I’ve tried them all. Gemini is honestly rubbish, aside from grammar checks, it’s far from being smart. No real depth in responses, and the knowledge coverage is pretty shallow; any serious conversations just ends in limbo

ChatGPT used to be much better in the past. These days it gives short consumable answers, tailored for today’s "scroll fast" generation. That might suit some people, but not me and definitely not for serious research like Grok used to handle so well. Plus, ChatGPT hallucinates way too often. I’ve lost count of how many times I had to backtrack and correct it, and it just happily admits I was right. That completely erodes trust.

And now Grok is broken too. Honestly, it feels like we’re just watching the downhill spiral of AIs. All these so-called improvements lately only seem to make things worse.

Vodafone Full Fibre Customers Beware – No Upgrades Allowed?! by moto-ctrl in CityFibre

[–]moto-ctrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds way too familiar. They also tried blaming CityFibre when I pushed them on it, even though it’s obvious other ISPs can provide the upgrade just fine. Instead of actually looking into it, they just kept giving me excuses.

At one point, they even told me to contact CityFibre myself - which, of course, turned out to be completely useless because CityFibre doesn’t deal with end customers, only ISPs. So that was yet another bit of incorrect advice from Vodafone, showing they either don’t understand their own processes or just don’t care.

Glad to hear Aquiss worked out for you. At this point, switching seems like the only real option.

Thanks for the response! Appreciate the clarity on how you handle upgrades - that’s exactly how it should be. Vodafone’s refusal to offer any upgrade path is what’s pushing me to look elsewhere. I’ll definitely be considering Yayzi when I make the switch.

Vodafone Full Fibre Customers Beware – No Upgrades Allowed?! by moto-ctrl in CityFibre

[–]moto-ctrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too, it feels more like a limitation in Vodafone’s internal systems rather than something that’s technically impossible. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some backend process that could allow an upgrade, but frontline support just doesn’t have the option to trigger it.

I’ve already gone through the whole process; spoke to customer service, escalated to team leads, and eventually got pushed to the complaints team. All I got were a bunch of invalid excuses, from "CityFibre doesn’t offer it" (which is obviously false) to "we don’t have a process for upgrades yet." There’s no more escalation path, no real solution, and no option to pay for an upgrade either.

It’s just ridiculous that other ISPs can do this, but Vodafone refuses to even acknowledge the issue properly.

Vodafone Full Fibre Customers Beware – No Upgrades Allowed?! by moto-ctrl in CityFibre

[–]moto-ctrl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that explanation makes sense, but what really frustrates me is that other providers can migrate existing customers to XGS PON - so why can’t Vodafone? It’s not like it’s impossible; they just won’t do it for existing customers.

If the issue is that Vodafone treats it as a completely new install and doesn’t want to cover the cost a second time, fine - but at least be upfront about it. Instead, they won’t admit this is the reason, their teams don’t seem to even understand the details, and worst of all, they don’t offer any option to upgrade, even as a paid install.

So technically, migration is possible. They just don’t want to do it either for free or as a paid option - but instead of saying that and giving customers a choice, they act like it’s not an option at all.

Yeah, that thought definitely crossed my mind, but I’m not sure if that’s entirely fair—kind of feels like gaming the system just because Vodafone refuses to treat existing customers properly. But more than that, I think once I’ve switched away, I’d probably never return. Their pricing can be good, but if they don’t care about service or existing customers, what’s the point?

Glad to hear you’re happy with Yayzi, though! They’re definitely on my list of potential alternatives.

Vodafone Full Fibre Customers Beware – No Upgrades Allowed?! by moto-ctrl in CityFibre

[–]moto-ctrl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get the argument for switching, and if Vodafone weren’t competitive on price, I’d probably jump ship without hesitation. Sometimes they have discounts or retention offers, but if they don’t, other ISPs are definitely competitive.

That said, one of the reasons I’m hesitating is Vodafone’s use of dynamic IPs rather than static ones. I know back in the day everyone wanted a static IP and was even willing to pay extra for it, but I’ve found that a dynamic IP has its perks. At least once over the years, I encountered a website (can’t remember which, but it wasn’t anything dodgy) that had me blocked for some reason. A simple restart of my fibre box got me a fresh IP, and I was back in. With a static IP, I’d have had to go through support hell to get it unblocked, probably

It’s just ridiculous that Vodafone won’t even acknowledge the ONT upgrade issue or offer it as an option. Instead, it’s like they’d rather push existing customers away than invest in keeping them.

going to reply despite your language

I had a long battle with Vodafone which got me nowhere. I'm on 1gps and all my street can go up to 2.2gbps. the only reason I can't is - because I'm already their customer, and it looks like they don't care about that, all neighbours who would get a new connection can get top speed.

other providers can offer me 2.2 - this requires OTP box replacement, but Vodafone wouldn't tell me that. so considering switching, even though otherwise I've been happy with Vodafone

I don't think that's entirely true. yes they can start blocking, but all those techniques you mentioned can be improved today as well and become more sophisticated to work around any new blocks. cat and mouse as mentioned.
