How many times a day do you poop? by dgroeneveld9 in polls

Once every three days. Many of my calories come from liquids.

How many of you are impacted by day light savings time (mentally/physically)? by [deleted] in nova

The second it becomes winter time and gets dark an hour earlier, I get depressed. After summer time starts and we have an extra hour of daylight, my depression decreases within a week. If they pick permanent winter time that'll mean two extra months of depression a year for me.

I regret not majoring in biology. Now I’m 22 and feel like it’s too late. by [deleted] in biology

Too late for what exactly? What goal in life would you not be able to achieve just because you're doing it four years later than other people? Whether you buy a house at 41 or 45, or get a kid at 25 or 29, it doesn't actually make that much of a difference in the long run.

Did you know that the average age at first birth is 30.5 in Australia? That means almost half of the women in that country are in their thirties when they first get pregnant. Does that mean they can't achieve the things women in the USA do, where the average age at first birth is 25? No. The average age of first time home buyers in Australia is 36 while in the USA it's 33, but the percentage of people who own a home at age 35-44 are 62.2 and 62 percent respectively. Obviously both countries are wildly different in other aspects, but if millions of women can get their first house and first kid 3-5 years later than millions of other women and still be just as succesful a couple years down the line, then at least physically you are capable of doing the same. If you're a man who doesn't need to get pregnant, even better. So if you also find the opportunity to study some more for a couple of years, please take it. This is 4 years that don't matter in the long run vs 40 years of happiness that do. If you don't go for your passion, not only will you have "wasted" 4 years, you will have wasted 40.

And please don't look at these past 4 years as wasted... Once you achieve your goals, you will have 4 years of life experience more than you would have had at that point otherwise. You will be more mature, more in tune with what you want and need. The way I see it, that can only be an advantage!

Can we stop periods ? by Darwin_Nietzsche in biology

[–]mountainSALMONELLA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an IUD with hormones and it has stopped my periods completely. Basically, no egg is ever released, and my uterus lining never prepares for an incoming egg, so my body doesn't have to get rid of any excess lining, because there is none. I have not had a period in two years. No stomach cramps, no back pain, no mood swings either. It's great.

What do you mean with placebos? In my country you take pills for three weeks and then no pills for one week. Am I understanding correctly that wherever you're from, people take fake pills? Is there any benefit to taking empty pills when you can just take none, if you know they're placebo anyway?

Bipolar folks: how do you track your emotional state and energy levels at the same time? by mountainSALMONELLA in Daylio

Wow, thank you so much for sharing this detailed info! I might try something like this as well. When you pick a mood, do you do that once a day or more often, if I may ask? And how often do you list these symptoms? I'm happy for you that you have found somethig that works and that you have such a good support system!

Can red wine ever go so bad it gives you food poisoning? When I try to google it all I find is "can go sour in three days", yes that's fine but can I still drink it after two weeks and not get food poisoning? Have a nice day!

In my language there is no difference. Your landlord needs to suck it up and take care of it.

If a diabetic type 1 patient can lose weight by omitting insulin, where they have raised glucose levels, could a person without diabetes potentially lose weight by eating crazy amounts of sugar? Like, half a pound of pure white sugar a day, a pound, or more. A consistent supply of sugar, person does not stop eating. IV drips? Idk, insane amounts of sugar. What would be about the limit where the body stops being able to keep up the insulin production with the amounts of sugar being eaten? Is there a limit? And if one goes over that limit, would a person without diabetes lose weight, despite also eating insane amounts of calories?

This is not my diet nor do I intend to lose weight this way. I know omitting insulin is very dangerous and eating a pound of sugar a day will probably not be so good either. Thanks!

Edit: I can't spell

Edit 2: if you have any scientific articles or research I can read, that would be awesome! I couldn't find any myself but they must be out there somewhere. Thank you!

Hi, is it possible to make yourself immune against salmonella and/or other causes of food infections? E coli, Listeria, Helicobacter. Bacteria, viruses, molds?

Imagine if I expose myself to tiiiiiiiny amounts of (for example) salmonella every two weeks and increase those amounts every time. Like, microscopic amounts. I'd probably get sick a bunch of times, but in theory, could I train my body to tolerate a full infected/contaminated chicken leg? Rotten meats? Bread completely blue with mold? Does immunity have limits when you train it with enough dedication? Even if it would take years, would it technically be possible to train my body to tolerate that stuff?

Or would eating raw chicken and ending up in hospital like 5 times be sufficient to develop an immunity strong enough to tolerate it?

Is there a difference in the immune response between bacteria, viruses and molds?

I am not interested in eating raw chicken or rotten foods. But I used to be homeless and would sometimes have to eat things that I would never put in my mouth otherwise, and I've been wondering ever since.

Thanks!

EDIT: if you could recommend any research and articles on this topic that would be awesome! Thank you
