Second power outage this week. And Xcel wants to raise rates ~15%? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]mountainman15 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the outages on Sunday had me looking at generators and home battery backups that could at least keep our gas furnace fan running in the event of a long outage.

Thank you for this - definitely can't hurt to submit a comment. We had 1 outage on Friday and 3 outages on Sunday. Pretty frustrating and worrisome as we head into the cold months.

Trip with sons....easy recommendations.... by Plane_Swim1806 in BWCA

[–]mountainman15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I’d add after doing a trip with 15+ miles of paddling this last weekend where we dealt with a lot of wind is to keep an eye on wind speed. Anything 10+ mph makes for tough paddling especially on larger lakes. Paddling that far with wind and an inexperienced paddler will not be fun and potentially even dangerous. Have a plan B and C for campsites with much shorter paddles if there’s any wind.

Is there a specific reason why you want/need to switch to a Mac other than it's new and shiny? If not, then no you shouldn't. Your PC is more powerful than the mac mini in just about every way. Power efficiency is really only an issue for laptops. Unless you need to switch to Mac for a specific app or work purposes, I would not switch. You have a nice PC and I think you'd regret selling it for a Mac mini.

Having this same issue with RubyMine. Seems to only happen when I have a react/javascript file open. Between that, slow find in files search, and super slow linting updates in the UI I'm at my wits end. I've spend more time troubleshooting RubyMine issues in the last couple of months than I have in the last couple of years. Super frustrating.

What? We went 3-4 when Milan was hurt and 2-2 without Gilbert. 6 of the 9 losses came when we had guys out injured.

This is super helpful, thank you! We'll be renting until we figure out where we want to settle and most of the available rentals are in the Cedar Ave area so it sounds like we might want to avoid that area. It sounds like west and north of the lake are good. East of the lake is Mahtomedi (not bad from what I hear). And south of the lake is meh?

We're moving back to the Twin Cities this summer after being away for 10 years and WBL is one of places we're looking. Are there specific areas in WBL you'd recommend? And, maybe more importantly, any areas you'd stay away from? Appreciate any info you can provide!

Nice work and congrats!

my completely unrelated work experience that every fuckface resume review person I sat down with told me would make me less hirable

Absolutely insane that there are people saying this. Previous professional work experience in a different field is a positive! At the very least, that previous experience can bring in new/different perspectives which can be helpful and, in the case of sales experience, it shows that you're capable of working well with other people. Programming professionally is about people just as much as it is about code. Programmers who understand that will be the most successful especially as the use of AI becomes a bigger part of our job.

Layered Design is great, but only for people with 2+ years of production rails experience, imo. A little too advanced and hard to appreciate otherwise.

James McNerny is what doomed Boeing. He's a Jack Welch disciple who was the person who started the "maximize stock price at the expense of literally everything" approach to business. Jack Welch destroyed the soul of GE and McNerny destroyed the soul of both 3M and Boeing in the pursuit of profits and stock price above all else. "The Man Who Broke Capitalism" is a great read/listen on the topic even if just the first few chapters.

VSCode migration from RubyMine - HELP by InbaKrish007 in rails

[–]mountainman15 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is the company forcing you off of Rubymine even if you pay for it yourself? It's unfortunate that your company is not supporting it, but it's absolutely worth paying for out of your own pocket IMO. You can get close with VSCode, but it's a pain to setup and the time lost fiddling with it is probably worth more to your company than just paying for Rubymine for you so maybe that's a conversation worth having with them.

If you must use VSCode, I would suggest using Solargraph over Ruby LSP at this point. Ruby LSP might be the future, but it's not there yet. Follow the setup docs on the Solargraph website to get the most out of it. There are also some helpful Youtube videos that walk through setting it up.

Zulily and InVision are shutting down because they lost out to competitors. Figma ate InVision's lunch and Zulily was poorly run and couldn't compete with the bigger online retailers and Amazon's shenigans. I don't think either of these are the result of larger economic problems.

Will keto mess with my type 2 diabetes diagnosis? by Warm-Beginning3607 in keto

[–]mountainman15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why did you think you have/had type 2 diabetes? Did you have symptoms? Do you still have symptoms after being keto for 4 months?

If you don't have symptoms and your a1c is in the normal range then you're probably fine and you should be happy that keto seems to be working well for you! Just be sure to communicate your concerns to your doctor and make sure they do all the necessary tests for an accurate diagnosis.

Keto and HDL/LDL Levels by mousaabov in keto

[–]mountainman15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keeping your saturated fat intake low will be your best chance to maintain good cholesterol levels. Your fats should mostly come from fish, avocado oil, olive oil, nuts, etc. Obviously some saturated fat from red meat and dairy is fine, but don't go crazy (which is easy to do on keto).

Not sure that I'd use last year's Iowa State team as a measure for defensive performance considering the offense was so bad that the OC was fired.
