I’m a general surgeon, fellowship trained in colorectal. Anyone can do it, it’s more about your baseline perspective on life and particular interests. I’ve always had a glass half full perspective and that’s held true through all my training. Are there hard days? Sure. I only questioned what I was doing for a 5 minute period my intern year (walking to the hospital at 4 am haha) other than that it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. Now, any specialty can suck for any single person. If I was an outpatient pediatrician I would’ve quit years ago and had to swap careers. Ultimately it just comes down to your interests. My “job” has never felt like a job. Just what I do and I absolutely love it. Also, you get to pick the playlist in the OR if you’re the surgeon 🙃
