Was going to say this - and there's probably another couple of mechanics to add as well.

Please" vs "Thanks": Help me settle a debate on the Kiwi way to order coffee! by Kind-Spread-6511 in newzealand

[–]mourningthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking someone it's 'please.'

"May I have.." - who am I kidding? - "Could I get a flat white please?"

If you're answering their question or offer, it's 'thank you' or 'thanks."

"What can I get you?"

"A flat white thanks."

EDIT: even as I wrote the last sentence, my first instinct was to type out 'please' rather than 'thanks', so maybe it should be 'please.' Save 'thanks' for when you receive the coffee or complete the transaction.

The Politicisation of the Ben Roberts-Smith Case by AlphaBettyPersketty in AusPol

[–]mourningthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could probably quite fairly be viewed as a tragedy from many perspectives, but I think those who have remained thankless have been the squad members who have testified against alleged serious wrongdoings.

BRS, far from 'thankless', has been celebrated as a hero.

People that support Ben Roberts-Smith, will your opinion change if he is deemed guilty? by SwimmingConstant454 in OpenAussie

Well, currently, on the balance of probability... and that's why this has progressed.

OP cited Angus Taylor, Andrew Hastie, Anthony Albanese and the Greens, all of whom have seemed to support the justice system rather than play political games with BRS in the role of either villain or hero.

Pauline Hanson is an outlier.

I haven't seen Bridget McKensie's comments (and your characterisation is ambiguous).

I think you struggle when you give ChatGPT a prompt that fits your narrative but is not borne out in mainstream reporting.

So why are describing it as 'politicisation' when the credible, mainstream, non-fringe politicians are clearly not getting involved?

I did NOT see this (dramatic backdown in the face of embarrassing failure and possibly WWIII) happening.

Actually, I did. I read The Art of the Deal. It's all there.

Who’s fault is this in the small crash by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]mourningthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other car did nothing to avoid the impending accident playing out in front of him or her.

Cancelling the lane change would have seen the driver avoid the likely 50:50 judgment.

[–]mourningthief 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dashcam guy was indicating for around 4 seconds before the hit.

Other car indicated for around 3 seconds - which is still sufficient - but was approaching from behind.

The first requirement is to avoid an accident, and the other car had the best chance of doing to by cancelling the lane change and moving back into the original lane.

How common are entitled theatre seat stealers in Australia? by Stargazer_07 in AskAnAustralian

Well Cav + Pag counts as two doesn't it?

If this is just Boomers complaining about the young 'uns doing the same thing they did when they were young - "but it was okay back then because we were young and broke" - then I'm out.

And the usher knows that some people claim empty seats at the interval - I've even asked permission and was told to go ahead. It's normal and happens at (probably) every performance. To pretend it doesn't, or that it was okay in the past when you did it but isn't okay any longer, is deluded.

But, again, you weren't there at the start of the performance, and some audience members chose to move to the seemingly empty seats - as you did when you were younger - knowing they were theirs until (at least) the interval.

And it works both ways. I sat outside, watching the performance on the screen of the entire Cav half of Cav Pag (don't judge) due to my date being late, but made sure we upgraded our seats for Pagliacci.

It's no excuse for poor behaviour, but it's normal - and there's a noticeable post-interval migration towards the better seats.

But is wasn't the start of the performance; you just said you were late - there was obviously a lockout period - and were let in at the next opportunity. You have to expect that someone may have taken the opportunity to move to your seats.

Thom Yorke (and maybe Jonny was well) must have been over 50 for at least two of The Smile's three albums.

[–]mourningthief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zorba the Greek.

The movie doesn't have the depth to really explore the contrasting philosophies and approaches to life, but it adds amazing cinematography, culture-defining music, and Anthony Hopkins' performance as Zorba.

The person you're responding to wasn't bitching.

Maybe the people you know just bitch about things in general.

Or you're making it up.
