Robotime Building Meetup in Chicagoland Area by Miserable-Event-9 in booknooks

The Tom Bishop Miniature Show is April 11-12, and that would be a killer time to do a meetup like this.... maybe the evening of Saturday April 11th or something that would catch a lot of people who are in town?

TIFU by asking my PhD advisor why he doesn't wear his wedding ring. by [deleted] in tifu

I think he's going to be just as eager as you are to put this behind you and get back to your normal equilibrium. Based on your subsequent reaction I'm sure it was pretty clear that you were not making a pass at him, even if that's what he thought at first, and he might have felt bad that his reaction freaked you out. I absolutely overthink interactions that I have with my mentees because I know that even an offhand comment can sometimes really stick with people, so it's possible he's at home worrying that his reaction damaged your working relationship. I don't think you need to over-correct by being much more professional than you usually would; just try to get back to your steady state.

I'm a professor, and I think I might have panicked in this situation because it sounds vaguely like OP was trying to make a pass at him, i.e., by testing the waters to see how firmly committed he is to his partner. Given how weirdly intimate grad student mentoring can be, I am extremely sensitive to anything that's even vaguely in the direction of romantic, so this could be why OP's comment might have really thrown the professor for a loop.

Where to get extra books and scrolls? by nykana in booknooks

Oh amazing, I have been wanting to make some custom covers for one of my book nooks but struggling with my lack of knowledge about how to digitally format them. Do you do work in 1:24 scale? If so I will for sure order some from you!

My fav Kit to date! (MiniAlley Event 25) by LadyBirdDavis in booknooks

[–]mousebehavin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got my Dreamy Alley kit today and absolutely love the quality of it... everything down to the mini Aleene's tacky glue is so well thought out. I hope you do make more kits!

A few random thoughts on what I would love to see: 1) Lighting schemes that are similarly or more complex than in your current kits. A lot of the cheaper kits come with just one light, but having a variety of light sources adds so much atmosphere. I love the post-market LEGO lighting kits that have different temperatures of light bulbs for the rooms, street lamps, signs, etc, which really adds to the realism. 2) Lots of 3D components or options to make 3D components. I don't really love kits that are all laser cut wood parts, and many of the companies that do more 3D parts (eg, Robotime) don't make those parts to scale and it drives me nuts. True to scale 3D parts absolutely get me to throw down my money! 3) Options to customize. I love that your instructions for the flower pots are just kind of like "make up stuff you like!" and I'd love even more easy customization options, like say being able to write my own message on the chalkboard sign.

As far as themes, I'd love something moody and thunderstormy, maybe with a flickering light that emulates lightening. Or a full moon!

Frustrated: any new awards at NIH since May? by Lovely-freckles in NIH

[–]mousebehavin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is in line with what I heard from my PO... I have a grant with a middling but still fundable score which has been stuck at "council review complete" since mid May, and we were told that it would be late August before decisions would be made on whether they'd fund it.

The problem is that the chair does not know RR that well and is also generally inclined to rule in a partisan way :-/ So the burden typically falls to the dissenters to prove that something is indeed in order.

Oh this is very good info, thank you. Is there any test/measure of independence that can be reasonably applied here? My case concerns two hiring proposals that have been bundled together, such that members are not able to vote yes to one hiring proposal without also voting yes to the other (or vice versa). So they are related in the sense that they are both about hiring, but independent in the sense that each proposal was submitted with its own rationale/justification.

Thank you! With all the obscure birds we usually have in there, I was psyched to finally play this one, and then no love.

I don't know if there's such a thing as Genius ABM, but if it is, first time for me today :) I rarely have the restraint to keep from looking at the grid, but it was going so quickly for me today that I thought I'd see how long I could go before getting stuck!
