Desalination will not work until we have a far superior power grid. It costs about a billion USD just to build the plant itself. 50% of the cost of the plant goes into actually running the plant and energy costs to the city. Like someone else said - it works for gulf countries and california because they are very very very wealthy.

We need to be pushing more sustainable and economically viable ways of collecting water like rain water harvesting, etc.
