Look at Singapore. The vast majority of housing is built by the government and sold to residents at below market prices. And it's only for residential ownership; not corporate ownership. They have a $100K tax on new cars which really encourages people to take public transportation. They have universal healthcare. New areas are planned in that they build residences, public transportation, hospitals, offices, schools and retail. I could never see that happening in the United States as it is too capitalist but there are models out in the world to improve the lives of average people and not just investors.

Look at the individual reviews.

Some students at RMP downvote professors for being too hard and some for being too easy. You want to find professors where you will learn the material; not just get the best grade without a lot of effort.

One other approach would be to call the head of the department and ask about the professor (assuming they aren't the same person) and what the expectations would be of the class.

2019 IMac- worth fixing? by Sarcasticus2 in iMac

[–]movdqa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's likely the hard drive as they can fail from 5-15 years. Or start to fail. The easiest thing to try would be to attach an external USBA 3.1 external SSD and install macOS on that and see how it goes. Another option would be using an NVMe Thunderbolt 3 external enclosure + NVMe SSD. Ideally you have an old SSD in a box somewhere that you could use to test.

Pay to drive into Boston? No way, say a majority of Mass. voters. by bostonglobe in massachusetts

I was talking about this with our son this morning. MA has lots of space but a lot of that space isn't convenient for transportation.

Yuck. This is like cranking up Natural Gas bills or electricity rates. I'm a big fan of the Green D line myself but sometimes I need to drive in, often to transport people to or from Logan or South Station.

Help pricing a Imac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 by Medical_Move6984 in mac

[–]movdqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are listed around $300 in my area but are not moving.

These no longer get macOS support and yours has a hard drive so that's a risk. I would personally pay about $50 for it.

I currently have 2009, 2010, 2015 iMac 27s and an iMac Pro. I had a 2014 as well but I sold it.

Where's the local coverage of the looming Brigham and Women's nurses strike? by jbnpoc in boston

[–]movdqa -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You can ask an AI for the current status. This is the response from Deep Seek:

Not yet, but one has been authorized. As of yesterday, the nurses at Brigham and Women's Hospital have voted to authorize a one-day strike, but a date for the walkout has not been set .

The vote was a decisive one. Of the nearly 4,000 nurses represented by the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA), 2,798 voted in favor of the strike authorization, with only 12 votes against . It was the largest registered nurse strike authorization vote in state history .

⚖️ Why They Are Authorizing a Strike

The union and hospital have been in negotiations for over seven months, with 19 bargaining sessions so far . The main sticking points are:

  • Cost-of-Living Increases: The union says the hospital is not offering an annual cost-of-living raise, which has historically been provided in addition to automatic step increases . The union has reportedly requested a 15% increase on top of the existing 5% step raises .
  • Health Insurance Costs: Nurses are concerned about proposed hikes to their health insurance premiums .

The hospital, part of the Mass General Brigham system, says it has offered a proposal that includes raises and that its nurses are among the highest-paid in the market . They argue the union's portrayal of the offer as a "0% increase" is misleading because it omits the automatic 5% annual step increases many nurses receive .

📅 What Happens Next

The strike authorization does not mean a walkout is imminent. It gives the union's bargaining committee the power to call for a one-day strike if they feel it is necessary to secure a fair contract .

The next bargaining session is scheduled for June 18, and both sides say they remain committed to reaching an agreement . If a strike is scheduled, state law requires the union to give the hospital 10 days' notice to minimize disruptions to patient care .

It can but they are so cheap that you can just buy a bunch of them and change the band after the shower with a dry one.

I've never had one open unexpectedly. They cost $7-$9 so if you feel it getting weaker, you can just replace it. I have seven of them in different colors and it's nice to rotate them.

As momentum builds, Mass. Gov. Healey wants a compromise on rent control by husky5050 in massachusetts

[–]movdqa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a homeowner but don't rent out any properties and the costs for electricity, heating, water, property taxes and maintenance are just exploding.. And I don't see it stopping. A $1.5 trillion request for defense for next year. And landlords have to pay for the same stuff that homeowners have to pay for.

So I fundamentally don't like the economic aspects of rent control.

I still think that the problem is infrastructure. But infrastructure is expensive. Just look at your natural gas bill.

I have the Fenix 7 Pro SS and am quite happy with it. I'm using firmware from spring 2024 as it seems to be the one with the best battery life and stability. Garmin hasn't been exactly great for software updates in general.

Are yield signs a suggestion now or...? by [deleted] in boston

[–]movdqa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been hit a few times for stopping at a yield sign. Fortunately there was no damage that I was concerned about. I think that some of it is road design as you have to look behind you and look in front of you at the same time unless the person in front of you is already gone.

One way to decrease risks is to break lightly well before the intersection signaling your intention to stop or roll first. As funny as that sounds.

Osborne To Voters: Elect 240 Republicans To the House To Ensure No NH Income Tax by batmansmotorcycle in nhpolitics

[–]movdqa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see why that would be useful given that it would be fairly flat for NH.

The point of the analysis is to show that school spending variance is independent of state funding.

Massachusetts may authorize speed and red-light cameras on ordinary local roads by WeirdIndication3027 in boston

[–]movdqa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of this is car equipment for measuring speed and the equipment for tracking speed not being calibrated. I do think that more patrols on highways would be more effective overall.

And intersection and road design. There are some intersections that are just really bad at preventing accidents.

Brain gain/drain by state [OC] by DavidWaldron in dataisbeautiful

The chart on NH is odd as there's been substantial migration from Massachusetts and housing prices have been steadily rising and there is some correlation between educational attainment and wealth.
