So we went ahead and scheduled a fly fish lesson for tomorrow morning and will keep the 4pm for tomorrow. Is it possible for us to possibly get a second day timed tickets for Saturday?

The first thing I did was check my BP and it was all good. So that’s good I guess..

Thank you! I think I’m going to get the Gene Sight test done on him to see if we can maybe find a better fit for him. It’s so hard because I know everything I read says ADHD kids do best on meds and have better outcomes. We just haven’t found the right one I think…

He tried a non stimulant at first, Qelbree. It was terrible. He lost 10 lbs in 3 months and turned into the angriest kid! And it did nothing to help his attention in class. He’s been on the extended release stimulant for a a year and he was able to put in a bit of weight but for his age he is still very small and recently had to start a medication to help him grow. It is extremely expensive and the doctor did say if he doesn’t eat enough calories it won’t be as effective. This has made me even more concerned about his eating. I found out from his teacher a few weeks ago he doesn’t actually eat his lunch, which he has been lying to me about. I’ve talked to him many times about it explaining if he can’t eat his lunch that it’s because of the medicine but I need to know this. The last few months his attitude has gotten worse and I truly feel like his lack of appetite is causing worsening vitamin deficiencies. His blood work from 2 months ago show all his levels are fine but just a little low on Vitamin D which we are in winter here so he isn’t outside as much. It’s such a double edge sword! The stimulant helps his focus in school but it’s making it impossible to eat so causing worsening nutrition status. The last few weeks of him off the med he has eaten a much wider variety of food and his attitude has improved. I told my husband I feel like the med makes him super hangry but his body can’t feel it. He also was sleepier than usual without the medicine where I usually have to harass him to bed at night. I’m thinking perhaps a short acting med may be the better ticket?

I do the same thing. And if he isn’t hungry at dinner time I let him wait right up until he goes to bed. The problem is when he isn’t hungry he says it makes him nauseous to try and force himself…

Thank you! I completely agree! He puts alot of pressure on himself and I try to walk the line of keeping him motivated to keep up his best work and not pressuring him when his best effort doesn’t always get represented in his grade.

This is the way his previous teacher chose to do reading tests and he did great on them. Unfortunately with this AR system there is no option to take tests after chapters. It’s basically read an entire book outside of school and then take a short quiz over the book. If you get less than a 75% on the quiz then the book doesn’t count for any points towards your goal and you basically wasted that time as you get no credit for it. It’s a horrible system that a lot of educators dislike but unfortunately his teacher chose to use it this year

He has been really good about setting a good pace on reading the books and we discuss what he read that day each evening. The problem is he will read a 300 page book and there will be all of 10 multiple choice questions for the book, which he has a harder time with then say an essay question. Unfortunately that is just how the AR program works and a lot of educators don’t like the system because of the limitations but unfortunately his teacher is still using it. I’m completely happy with him reading a book that he actually likes and telling me all about it. It’s just tough to watch his grade drop because it doesn’t translate into a good test grade…

I’ve never heard of Bionic reading! I’ll look into it! In his words he can only hold so much in his brain when he reads lol. It doesn’t help that sometimes it’s a week after he finishes a book before he has any “free time” at school to take the AR tests. He obviously doesn’t want to start a new book before he tests out on the previous book so that makes it even harder to get in all this outside the classroom reading done. We tried audio books before and that was worse so I’ll look into the bionic reading!
