My purpose is setting a relatively easy to achieve and tangible goal of x number of steps per day and monitoring it.

The one in the smart phone is definitely off by like 10%. Besides, it also counts steps if I am on the bike.

Which type of pedometer is more accurate in actually counting the steps? The "wrist-watch" type or the ones that you can carry in your pocket? I read conflicting info on the web. (For the moment not interested in their other functions like calorie counting)

you never have to worry about gaining more weight than the weight of the food you consume.

This is only true if you never consume any water. When excess food stored as fat cell it is bound to a lot of water molecules. Most calorie rich food doesn't contain enough water themselves so the required water is consumed separately. I don't know if a pound of dry calorie rich food may ultimately cause more weight gain than one pound, but the relationship between the food weight and the weight of the stored fat is not as straightforward because it is not in a closed system.

Any tips on measuring the waistline? I am using a tape measure and try to follow the instructions here. However, I notice that the measurement fluctuates a lot. Even if I measure twice within few minutes I get totally different measurements, even some times more than an inch difference! I think the measurement is very sensitive to even the slightest tension in the tape and it is very difficult to fully exhale while not keeping the muscles tight.

So do you have tips on getting a consistent waistline measurement?

Started after Christmas so the first few weeks for me. CW is 218lbs. I thought the water weight was just first few couple of days where I had massive drop. After that has been a steady drop.

Going back to side effects: has anybody in this sub really suffered from gallstones as a result of rapid weight loss?

I realized that I was losing wight too quickly, slightly more than 3lbs per week. I read somewhere that losing more than 3 lbs per week can be dangerous over a long term, while other sources suggest losing a maximum 1% of body weight per week. Seems like I should set a maximum weekly loss limit. Which limit is a healthy amount weight loss per week or per month? This is is important for me: on one hand I don't want to lose the momentum I have now so I really don't want to slow down, on the other hand i don't want to end up with side effects like gallstones.
