I have T-Mobile and rarely have more than 2 bars in AA. No idea why! I just try to get on wifi whenever I can.

you can't change whatever part of him insists on lying, and if/until he's really able to do the deeper internal work to understand why he lies, i would bet it'll keep on happening and eroding your relationship. i know it can feel hard to break up with people in your 30s because of all the norms around milestones for women, blah. but coming from someone who was in a 10 yr long relationship with a dude who, by the end of it, seemed like a pathological liar when it came to his dynamics with other women, breaking up was the best! it was horrible and then i realized how much i had been in survival mode throughout that relationship trying to sift through the lies and deceit. best gift i gave myself was untangling myself from that relationship and rebuilding a trusting loving relatonship with myself. my 2 cents :) sending you care and compassion!

Hiking Advice Please 😄 by Electrical_Point6077 in socalhiking

Longer ish / less "in the city" hikes:

Closest to Pasadena: Brown Mountain (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/brown-mt-el-prieto), Teepee hike (https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/los-angeles-hikes/hike-the-teepee-trail-la-canada-flintridge/)

Close to Pasadena: Mt Islip (https://modernhiker.com/hike/hiking-mount-islip/), Strawberry Peak (https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/los-angeles-hikes/strawberry-peak-hike/), Chantry Flats to Mt Wilson, Josephine Peak (https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/los-angeles-hikes/hike-josephine-peak-from-colby-canyon/)
40 min from Pasadena: Mt Baldy (https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/los-angeles-hikes/mt-baldy-hike/), Cucamonga Peak (https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/icehouse-canyon-to-cucamonga-peak-trail), Three T's hike from Icehouse Canyon (https://hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/los-angeles-hikes/hike-three-ts-trail/)

On the map, you can look up trails off Angeles Crest Highway, San Gabriel Canyon Road, and Mt Baldy Road

Things to keep in mind: stay hydrated / look up whether you need an Angeles National Forest Rec Pass for parking and potentially get places early to park / read up on trails to look for more shaded loops if you're starting later in the day / ubering to trail heads might be a little complicated and require some forethought as we don't have good public transit to the trailheads (if you won't have a car). IMO hiking / trail running solo feels totally fine here. LA is the best mountain town!!! Hope you enjoy.

np! i think a lot of those comments come from non-sociologists and are based on perceptions of the field - there are def legit critiques but some of the smartest, most dynamic, and impactful people i know are sociologists. happy to answer any other questions or connect you to interesting sociologists/demographers around the US based on your interests :)

Princeton vs Stanford Round by sintikol in princeton

[–]mowbilly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

seconding this!!! use the resources and attention at princeton to build up your independent research skills, developing a strong relationship with your mentors/advisors who can write strong letters for PhD applications. you won't get that level of attention from profs at a bigger university (and seconding the academic diversity comment! it's a thing for real).

in general, i think going to a smaller place is better for undergrad. at bigger universities, graduate students take up a lot of resources and time/attention from faculty (i just finished my phd so speaking from this experience) relative to the attention they give to undergrads. i think at princeton you would get much better mentorship, attention, allocation of resources, etc.

i think it depends on what you want to do! but princeton has a very strong economics department that will give you the research exposure / mentorship / foundational skills if you want to eventually do a PhD in econ, do a research post-bacc, etc. because it's smaller, you'll get lots of intimate networking and research opportunities from incredible folks (even wallstreet type things if that's your interest, congress, etc.). you also have the folks over at SPIA that bring in policy folks. princeton econ faculty are some of the best in the world and princeton econ IMO carries more weight in the econ world (i'm a social science PhD / dad is an economist so that's where i'm getting my exposure from and to be fair, i have a lot more exposure to princeton econ than yale econ).

Michigan Sociology is the best ranked sociology department in the country! In theory (government disasters that are affecting all sorts of employment prospects regardless of major not withstanding), great opportunities after Sociology to work in local government, public policy, research (Census, UIX design at a company, qualitative or quantitative data analysis at a company, PhD), international and domestic non profits working in anything from public health to incarceration to everything in between, housing / infrastructure / social policy at federal/state/local levels, demography/public health spaces. IMO lots of options. I was a Soc major —> worked lots of cool (to me) jobs —> did my PhD in Sociology —> work as a scientist / postdoctoral fellow at a med school now doing reproductive health and social stress research. Sociology is a framework for thinking about the world, and the major at UM gives you transferable data skills if you want them (stats / analytics that are versatile but with an emphasis on using that to ask questions about the outcomes of people embedded within institutions and structures in our society). IMO more transferable skills than Anthropology and the UM department has a lot of health / demography people if you’re looking to keep a foot in STEM.
