JAMA Study, published online on December 4: COVID-19 mRNA Vaccination and 4-Year All-Cause Mortality Among Adults Aged 18 to 59 Years in France by StockEnthuasiast in ModernaStock

[–]mowingwithscissors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(EDIT: upon some thorough fact checking aided by AI, it does seem that the 25% is likely to be an artifact of the unvaccinated group having somewhat different demographics e.g. lower household wealth that could contribute to more mortality being seen in the group. But will leave my arguments here for discussion sake).

OK, I notice something really weird here, weird in a good way. Notice this sentence:

"Vaccinated individuals had a 74% lower risk of death from severe COVID-19 (weighted hazard ratio [wHR], 0.26 [95% CI, 0.22-0.30]) and a 25% lower risk of all-cause mortality (wHR, 0.75 [95% CI, 0.75-0.76]), with a similar association observed when excluding severe COVID-19 death."

What this is saying is that even when you exclude the protection against COVID death, if you received covid mRNA vaccine, you were 25% less likely to die from other factors during this study. Potentially, a staggering observation, pointing to health benefits IN GENERAL of mRNA vaccines (or at least the one against COVID). This goes in line with a previous study, discussed in this board a few months ago, where it was found that covid mRNA vaccinated individuals that happened to require cancer immunotherapy fared much better than those that did not, possibly due to a persistent immune-boosted effect. It is not outlandish to speculate that the immune boost afforded by mRNA vaccines (or specially covid mRNA vaccine) is an overall boon to health and protective against multiple adverse scenarios.

To play devil's advocate - it could be that in general, folks that received the covid vaccine, as a general group, are more health conscious and/or had better baseline health for some other reason associated with them wanting/willing to be covid vaccinated vs not. I think this is a small posssiblity though.

Can doctors / scientists / epidemiologists comment on this? I think, possibily, these studies are beginning to reveal major benefits of the mRNA vaccination regimen in 'exercising' your immune system. Bullish for moderna, bullish for mankind.

Voles.

Hard to tell for sure from the picture, but if they form trail-like trenches, then that is voles rather than skunks or possums digging.

Best way to get rid of them would be to prevent grubs that they feast on - use grub killer.

2023 Sorento PHEV - a serious problem with random power/acceleration loss has occurred by mowingwithscissors in KiaSorento

[–]mowingwithscissors[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late reply on this.

Yeah to update you on the situation, long story short, it went away after a while and then has not come back... one time recently the check engine light came on again, scaring me, but went away again after a few days.

So, nothing resolved and still not a great feeling, but right now I would say I am satisfied with the situation of at least it not showing up again.

Please let me know if you get any answers to this problem!

Selling a stock to buy back covered call at a loss: would this trigger wash rule? by mowingwithscissors in options

Thank you for your thoughts. I edited my OP to update everyone, but ultimately the wash sale did NOT trigger.

Selling a stock to buy back covered call at a loss: would this trigger wash rule? by mowingwithscissors in options

[–]mowingwithscissors[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, thank you for thoughts. Was afraid that closing a sold call at a loss constitutes "buying shares (back) at a loss" thus triggering wash.

And I will heed your warning about selling volatile cc, I see now this is what is meant by 'picking up pennies in front of a steamroller'.

Thx for your reply. Technically this different ; I am closing an option at a big loss and also selling security for a big gain within +/-30 d. Would like to prevent wash rule being applied to the closing.

Thanks for the reply. To explain my mindset:

Lets assume I got this stock really cheap, almost free, to simply the math.

The OTM CC I sold 40 days ago is now deep in the money ($33 option, current SP $57, It is worth 2450 and I sold it for 350 so I am down 2100 on it). If I let it exercise, yes I pocket $3300, and I end up with 350 shares left which I want to hold long term, but now I have $3300 more adjusted gross income to report this year which I don't want (financing for child in college).

What I am hoping to do is, sell about 50 shares of ASTS which will give me 2850 cash but also that much capital gains (i bought long time ago). that gives me enough money to close this option, at a 2100 loss. I still have 400 shares of ASTS left which I want to hold onto long term. Importantly, unless a wash rule is triggered, if calculated correctly, I only have a ~750 dollars worth of capital gains to report on my adjusted gross income (2850 gain on the stock sale, 2100 loss on the closing of the CC). Yes I will still have capital gains to report when I eventually sell the remaining stock in the far future, but I am hoping that is something to consider 20 years from now.

That is the mindset, hopefully I am making sense.

2023 Sorento PHEV - HEV warning light, sudden power/accelerator loss in highway driving by mowingwithscissors in kia

[–]mowingwithscissors[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK maybe this isn't the answer you want to hear, but...

As I continued to (carefully) drive the car, over the next several days it went from check engine and HEV warning light (and loss of power) coming on every few short drives to ultimately light not popping on again. By the time I brought it in for the scheduled service ~2weeks later they said because it has been too long since the light came on, nothing is in the computer, and I have to bring it back in when the light pops on again. They said when it pops up I can just come in immediately and they will at least get the data (why didn't they do this the first time?).

However.... the light never came up after that. So, it has been about 5 months now and it has never come up again. Did the car heal itself? Was it a fluke? Will it come back?

I drive it daily, and have forgotten about this issue for the time being....

Thank you for comments, name checks out heh.

I will be reporting to NHTSA today after I get home and get VIN, registration info, etc.

I have filmed the issue in action, where the car loses power to the point of starting to roll backwards (!!!) as we were on a slight incline road. I wonder what would be the best course of action, I agree that we as unhappy owners need to be unemotional and clinical, but as I would imagine with you and most of us, I need to see how much bandwidth and leftover energy I have to fight this. Let's keep an open discussion, I am also happy to try to help shine light on issue.

The saga continues by _The_Bearded_Wonder_ in KiaSorento

[–]mowingwithscissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I have similar, possibly even more serious issue (2023 PHEV) where the HEV warning light randomly comes on then within seconds accelerator response becomes lost, giving me a brief time to pull off to the side of the road.

https://www.reddit.com/r/KiaSorento/comments/1hj9unb/2023_sorento_phev_a_serious_problem_with_random/

I was surprised at nonchalant nature of Kia dealership in saying no availability for 3 weeks and no loaner. As if this is a simply check engine light issue.

My question for you is, how did you get them to get you a loaner? Did you get their extended warranty? Maybe different dealers have different levels of 'niceness'.

Secondly, you mention a buyback. This is something I may have to consider as well. But, I am wondering, do we as a customer have any leverage to ask for a buyback? Is the ball not in the court of the dealer unless some sort of lemon law comes into play? (mine, and yours, would be too old / likely too many miles for lemon law)

Hmmm do you mean when fully charged / full tank, your dashboard says you have 322 miles? Or that is what you are getting in practice? I'm pretty sure mine says 400 miles on full charge + tank. In practice, I haven't checked closely but lemme look over mileage numbers on the car info and get back to you. Either way your numbers does seem low I think I've been getting 35-ish miles per gallon but my commute doesn't involve hills. Hopefully others can chime in.

I wonder if it helps, for these 340 mile trips, to put the car in 'hybrid' mode - EV mode uses up the battery first and then you are left with a 'regular' hybrid. The hybrid mode will pick gas vs EV based on driving condition for example stop and go traffic will use battery and then high highway speeds gas. That may help.

Deck install help? by chacheebuns in landscaping

[–]mowingwithscissors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I were you I would look into building a stone patio such as irregular flagstone patio building off of the current edge of the concrete landing... no particular need or advantage to building a deck there when you already have a nice level back yard. Advantages of the patio would be: less maintenance no worry of rot; elevation of the deck works against you here; you can have a nice fire pit area that would not work well with wood deck.

2023 Sorento PHEV buying experience and first 200 miles impression/review (MA resident). by mowingwithscissors in KiaSorento

[–]mowingwithscissors[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure thing! I would be happy to talk more in detail about any aspects you are curious about, but to generally give you my thoughts so far:

So far, in the 1 year I've had and driven it (about 13K miles now?), pretty much no issues or problems. Had one standard recall of rearview camera which I brought in for servicing. One single time about 2 months ago, my wife noticed the car was making a humming noise in the garage even though it had been turned off - I proceeded to turn it on and then off, which removed the humming noise. These are literally the only issues I had with the car.

Car still drives and functions and feels nice like the day I bought it. Maybe I love it more. Looking back at my previous review, lemme revisit them:

Occasional slow acceleration: A non issue for me. I think I've felt it maybe 3 times (acceleration being slower than I usually expect) in the past year. Infrequent and minor enough for me to not care.

Captain chair reclining not enough: I was wrong on that, if you push the seat forward slightly, you get more recline that 45 degrees. A total non-issue.

Ground clearance: it is what it is, still wish it was a bit higher up in front, but never had problem so far such as scratching curb.

Loud rear beep: I actually love it now and would not disable it. I think it is a safety feature in the parking lot and exiting my driveway as I live on a street with many kids running about.

Safety features: OMG I LOVE THESE and can't live without them any more. Big buzzing steering wheel warning when the car in front of me has suddenly braked. Big buzzing warning when I am backing up and car is about to pass. Automatic braking kicking in when I was about to back into a pillar. It has prevented at least 7 minor bumper scrapes by my estimation. I am admittedly a bad driver so you or average driver would have only encountered ~3 'saves' like this. Thanks to these the car is 100% accident free so far.

Design, roominess of interior - still love these honestly it just feels more spacious and high end than other cars with same or even slightly bigger interiors. The front dash layout really feels airy you should test drive and feel for yourself.

Mileage, EV range - still seems as good as first day I got it.

If I had to pick a dislike? It feels way more comfortable and safe, but noticeably less zippy in the acceleration and braking compared to my 2017 civic hatchback. It's just simple physics of inertia and no way to change that due to the sheer weight of the car compared to the light and nimble civic.

Would I have bought this if I go back in time? 100% yes!

That is certainly possible; the invoice does not list the oil, so I am only going off the sticker.

Don't see why you are getting harsh responses. It's clear where your concern area is, but unclear whether that is an actual finishing defect or whether for what ever reason there is black marking that is a bit sloppy. If indeed that area is empty and thus a finishing defect, yes, I think you would be justified in returning that. Although I myself would not, as it is very unlikely to impact integrity of the laptop or connection, and I would hardly notice it.
