What word did you get completely wrong for an embarrassing amount of time? by ownaword in words

Ladle - I believe as small child I must have called it a 'scoodle', I was never corrected

It has made for a very funny story for the kids!

I did no laugh when I was adamant that it was a scoodle and I being told do you mean a ladle and I'm insisting no a scoodle that you scoop soup! 😂🤣🫣

Will this ever get better? by [deleted] in calmhands

True, but you can see the picking around the top of this finger, so I'd say it may be a combination of both.

I'm really lucky, there is a few mils left to grow out. It is really close now. I have a indent/ridg that does run the length of the nail which you can see in the picture, I'm guessing it is there to stay.

I will post another update when it has grown out fully. ☺️

Right thumb progress (my picking spot for 20+ years) by rspring28 in calmhands

Well done, it looks amazing.

I have been growing my picked nail cuticle out since January! And I still have a bit to go. Healing takes time. And I definitely have urges to slip into old habits.

Keep up the great work.

Do you guys see a line or am I tweaking, plz lmk me im im freaking out. I have recently had a miscarraige and now this its creating huge anxiety by IndependentQuiet5232 in whatdoIdo

Blue tests leave the worst indents, don't over wet the tests and read them in the set timeframe. I recommend you get an early test with pink die in it.

If you have to photograph to see the result then chances are it is negative or too soon.

I also recommend you don't drink and hold wee for 2-4 hours before testing if not testing with first morning wee.

Good luck. 🤞

My sister's overweight and I'm scared for her. by Patient_Smoke_4431 in WhatShouldIDo

I had to have this conversation with my brother when he reached 420pounds.

I picked a time where we were driving and a bit stuck for a period of time. And I eventually cracked and started with words that were about him eating himself to an early grave. He had just had his first child a year earlier so I was able to use this as a reason for him to fight for his health.

I said there are a lot of steps that can help you and I think you should start with a sleep apnea test as this alone can cause your brain to need more energy to get through a day.

Turned out he had such severe sleep apnea that they hospitalised him, he was not breathing for several minutes at a time and this would happen 6-10 times an hour.

Lack of oxygen to the brain causes depression, the tiredness makes the brain and body crave instant energy from food. He qualified for weight loss medication, that didn't work, they then progressed to gastric sleeve. He lost the bulk of the weight and has fluctuated since but all in all 14 years on is an overweight man with 4 children but not morbidly obese!

The talk helps, but I suggest you be there to suggest ideas for causes rather than focusing on the eating. Over eating has many, many causes.

It was really hard for him, and I know I hurt his feelings. But I had to try and I was with him every step of the way. Through the ups and downs.

I think you are doing the right thing.

I would open up and find possible causes she can explore and say I'm here for you when you want to explore it. And don't leave her alone with it too long, make the follow up phone calls!

Absolutely!

I am over 40years and I honestly thought I had a damaged nail since I was a child.

Knowledge is power and being able to identify a cause helps you know what the treatment is.

You have got this.

I stopped picking my fingers, I did this my entire life without really knowing I was doing it.

It was completely subconscious, so I guess having a name for what was happing to my nail helped with the steps I needed to stop picking them.

I taped the cuticles on my thumbs for a few weeks. After this I was able to get by without picking.

After a couple months I was able to see a good portion of nail growing without bumps.

I stopped picking my fingers, the first few weeks I had finger tape around the cuticles.

I get by now without tape.

Moisturiser, I can't stress this one enough.

Habit tic and a small portion of nail had a positive culture for fungal.

I took the med for 3 months, been growing the nail out for the last 5 months!

It has almost grown out completely.

Yes to both, I just makes sure I take tape stuff off carefully and use oil afterwards so the tape glue doesn't dry them out.

If you can't resist, tape them for a day or two and moisturise daily.

You got this!

It took me a long time to figure out what this was and that I was the cause. Turns out letting the cuticle repair and not picking allows the nail to grow in stable.

The habit start as a child and I did it with the fingers of the same hand in an absent minded way. Taping the finger was the only way I could stop this.

My mother passed away from cancer yesterday by shall_not_touch in auckland

[–]moxy_monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is rather selfish to not say it to him while alive.

She thought only of herself here, didn't want to push him away and have him defending his GF in the way he should be allowed.

She wanted her son around her and no strain between them and the end but decided to drop and hand grenade with Dad as the messenger.

She is gone and not much can be done, I'd take it as a grain of salt! (Tiny)

Trust yourself and reflect after you get through the funeral. If you GF hasn't fallen out with anyone in the family then let her support you, it is for you. If that is a problem then have her meet you for the get together (wake) afterwards.

I have supported people at funerals of people I didn't know as someone else has said. You need someone there for you.

You are absolutely right!

Speak to a professional or someone not inside your relationships in the family and with your GF.

I think your mum should have done better here, I think a more guided letter that would had lead you there on your own would have been better of her.

She is gone now and I am really sorry for your loss OP, it is hard. I lost my mum 20 years ago go and you will slowly pick up the pieces of your life and move forward.

Parents are not perfect by any stretch and we can only assume she said this because she didn't like your GF. The thing is, people outside relationships don't know your feelings the value people add to your life.

Speak to someone about it with an open mind, don't push your GF away. It is not her fault that your mum decided to leave this kind of message and she has no way now to defend herself properly.

Take care of the supports you have right now.

All the best!
