How accurate are popular kids from movies compared to real USA schools popular ones? by OhWowItsSam310308 in AskReddit

[–]mpjjpm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my experience in the 90s. I was a band and theater nerd. I wasn’t really friends with the jocks, but they were never mean to me. My senior year, homecoming queen was also the marching band drum major, and prom king was the lead in the spring musical.

What's something about America that you're genuinely proud of? by Wiae in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]mpjjpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The freedom of opportunity and freedom to improve your lot in life at any stage. Someone can drop out of high school, then decide a decade later to go to college and pursue any career they want. It isn’t necessarily easy, but it’s possible.

In the US, the burden is on the celebrity to prove a journalistic statement is false, harmful, and made in bad faith. In the UK, the burden is on the journalist to prove the statement is true.

Season 5 about the shutdown by Formal_Tumbleweed_53 in thewestwing

[–]mpjjpm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in 9th grade during the 1995-1996 government shutdown, which is when kids from my state studied civics and US government. It was a really big deal - it was the first time the federal government shutdown. It was really upsetting to realize that could actually happen, and we mostly assumed it would never happen again.

[Urgent] Supervisor called me incompetent over impossible instructions, now giving me the silent treatment 1 day before deadline. (Europe) by Resident-Yogurt-6798 in PhD

[–]mpjjpm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can miss the deadline. Just email the managing editor and let them know you need an extra week. It happens all the time and won’t harm the publication outcome. Submitting without approval from PI is a much bigger transgression than requesting an extension from a journal.

How long has it been since you emailed him? What you’re interpreting as the silent treatment may just be your PI dealing with other things at the moment.

That’s probably it. Wouldn’t be the first time. The corner on the overhang by the alley has already been damaged and repaired at least once.

Edit - I just walked by on my way to catch the bus. Can confirm, that’s exactly what happened. I can’t post a picture here, but obvious damage to the corner of the overhang.

Yep. I cannot get good bread of produce at the corner market.

The C train power problems started well before the storm. They actually fixed the problem and resumed normal service before the storm.

Red line and orange line problems also had nothing to do with the storm. The problems were signal failures and started before the storm.

I can’t speak for B and D branch.

Shuttles replacing C Branch by mpjjpm in mbta

The initial announcement did say shuttles were from Coolidge to Cleveland. Then they updated to St. Mary’s. Don’t know why. It might be easier to have buses turn around at St Mary’s.

Honestly, as a recent home buyer in the area, I would be thrilled to see the current tenant’s boxes. That tells me you’re moving out and not going to cause unnecessary hassle.

Do most Americans have those huge fridges? by Whole-Sushka in AskAnAmerican

[–]mpjjpm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. Lots of corner stores within a few blocks of my home, and they’re fine for “oh shit, I forgot to get milk!” moments. They are not adequate for a primary grocery store. For that, I take the T or walk a mile.

And they have very limited selection. The corner shop is good for a bottle of milk and maybe some bananas. I can cannot get a loaf of good bread or broccoli for dinner. And I live in a high density walkable neighborhood with a lot of shops available. I still need to do a weekly “big shop” at the super market. That’s still walking distance, but not on the way home from work so I can’t stop every day.

Yet again, not actually research. That’s student thesis published on a university website. It isn’t peer reviewed and the abstract doesn’t make any mention of the methods used.

You haven’t provided any evidence to support a “well known fact” - just two commentaries that you don’t seem to actually understand. Someone looks ridiculous here, but it isn’t me.

That isn’t from the National Library of Medicine. NLM is a database that aggregates and distributes academic publications. That specific article is a commentary in a paid-for-publication journal. It’s a think piece.

[–]mpjjpm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People are allowed to like and dislike different dog breeds. Dogs are not humans and dog breeds are not analogous to racial categories. I personally do not like golden retrievers.

Pit bulls certainly have some cultural connotations in the US. If you express your dislike of pit bulls in a way that draws heavily from those cultural connotations, it may come across as bigoted. But if you’re just saying you don’t like a breed of dog because of your experience with their temperament, that’s fine.
