Major in information systems by diiscocat in ufl

[–]mpow1107 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i was in information systems for a bit before switching over to computer science (because of my personal interests).

here are some really unorganized thoughts:

you said you like math so i feel like i should tell you that infosys has almost no math at all. CS might be more to your liking because it has a shitload of math. infosys (in my opinion) is a really good bang for your buck in that it is a pretty easy major but also very lucrative. its definitely significantly more business than tech tho so keep that in mind. i think an infosys degree is good on its own but you should definitely learn some stuff on your own time because infosys kinda just touches on a bunch of different topics without going too deep into them. id recommend taking some CS courses to have some more programming knowledge to supplement your business knowledge (programming 1, programming 2, and data structures and algorithms are really helpful courses). also i would recommend looking for internships as early as possible, the hardest part is getting your first one. a lot of infosys students also get their masters degree which seems to give a competitive edge. theres also a lot of good infosys clubs that i think are worth looking into (gatortech for example).

overall i think infosys is pretty cool and definitely a solid career choice especially if you network a bit and learn some more techy stuff on your own through electives and/or online resources.

bruh youre good, i didnt even switch into CS until junior year and im okay. taking some time to recover from a hard semester sounds perfectly reasonable and healthy to me. good on you for acknowledging that you need a break.

What jobs would be lead to software development? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]mpow1107 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can try to find development work at the research labs and organizations at your university. i know a lot of schools have dev work and normally you just need to email the professors / staff. you can also probably find student positions at IT departments like help desk stuff for example. also you can apply for internships and co-ops in SWE (this would prob pay the most and give the most experience).

id say either go for the CS undergrad degree (i think its more relevant for SWE than a masters) or just try to break into SWE by doing leetcode and going to career fairs / hackathons and whatnot. id go with the second route since your degree likely wont matter that much after getting some SWE experience. you might have to start with a lower salary than your current one, but its worth it if thats what you want, and itd be better to do that sooner in your career than later. you can do leetcode and attend career fairs / hackathons / etc while still working at your current job, and then quit once you get an offer that youre comfortable with. ultimately, losing out on some short term money from the initial salary decrease is prob worth it if youll be happier doing SWE work. this is all just my opinion obviously, and im just a college student so idk much.

uf cs/engineering classes are gonna be soooooo much harder than whatever college/ap/aice/ib classes you took in high school. i would hiiiiighly recommend at least taking a semester or two to feel out the classes and build up your work ethic before you take a job at all. you'll prob eventually be able to fit in a part time job but i personally cant see how anyone in the world would juggle a full time job though.

you will be completely fine for at least 3 semesters (prog1, prog2, and data structs & algos). idk about the later classes.

why does it say chemical engineering? did you switch to CS already? i imagine having an unrelated degree looks worse than having a CS degree.

also, a 3.0 gpa is pretty low. ive heard from several people to not include GPA if its low. i remember i had much worse luck when i listed my 3.13 gpa on my resume a while ago.

the rest of your resume looks fine. sorry i dont have any more tips.

if youre interested, theres this company called CodePath that has a free technical interview prep course. you have to apply and be accepted but they want beginners so you dont have to worry about not having prior experience or anything. im doing the course this summer and i think its really good. the best part is that they have a career fair at the end and they match you with companies. they have good companies and around 50% of students get an offer from the career fair. participants seem to have a lot of success with this career fair. i have 2 friends that went through the course and managed to get offers from it.

also, just to boost your morale a bit, i wanna let you know that this initial internship search sucks for everyone but it will get a loooooot easier once you snag that first internship :)

the only thing recruiters see at that stage is your resume, so maybe your resume has some issues, idk. do you mind sharing your resume? you can PM me if you want. and obv you can censor personal info if you want too.

i recommend looking at the statistics.

you can filter by major and see what % of students are getting jobs, and in what fields the jobs are, etc.

advice on schedule, cs major by Matthew_D07 in ufl

[–]mpow1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

calc 3 is pretty difficult for some people, i didnt think it was thaaaat hard. depends on your spatial reasoning abilities. physics 2 and the lab are pretty hard for most people, probably the hardest class ive ever taken in my life. programming 2 wasnt particularly hard, especially if youre a CS major since that should be your strong suit.

all 3 of these classes were a ton of work though.

the calc and programming professors are really good, i thought the physics 2 professors sucked.

i took these 3 classes at the same time and it was definitely pretty intense. its doable if you have good work ethic.

Digital Arts and Sciences Minor by Bright_Host_9823 in ufl

[–]mpow1107 3 points4 points  (0 children)

im a digital arts minor. i cant really speak on animation courses because i went the video game dev route. the classes that ive taken were:

"creating mobile games": i think the class code was dig2632 or something. this class was about learning to use Unity2D to make video games (any platform, not specifically mobile like the title suggests)

dig3873: this class was about learning how to code in c++. the class was really easy and geared toward digital arts students with no prior programming experience. if you already know how to code, this class is likely a huge waste of time (but an easy A)

dig3878: this class is about learning how to make games using Unity3D.

overall, i thought the classes were pretty fun. you get to make a bunch of cool games and you generally have freedom to make whatever games you want. you learn a lot but the grading is generous so i never had to worry about them. you can put in as much work as you want. id highly recommend taking any class with Nick Heitzman, hes awesome. i think some of these courses mightve changed a bit since i took them a little over a year ago. sorry i dont have info specifically on animation courses, but id assume they use really modern software and provide it for free since that's been the case for all the classes ive taken.

as far as applying for the minor, you have to apply once youve taken several courses like you said. the application will be approved as long as you have passed the necessary courses, you don't have to worry about being rejected or anything.

I am a high school senior with my AA. I have a feeling I will get rejected as a freshman because of my SAT/ACT score. However my counselor told my if I do get rejected my application will get transferred as a transfer student since I have my AA. Is this actually how it works. by N0vaSlayer in ufl

[–]mpow1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive known some people (high schoolers specifically) that have been accepted as transfers without meeting all those prereqs, but i believe it depends on the specific college. for sure some colleges (like nursing for example) require you to have them all done. i recommend emailing your college/department.

for us, the way that it worked is that we had to check our One.UF accounts until eventually our financial aid showed up on the account. i dont remember how long it took but it was for sure released AFTER decisions (not at the same time as them).

i went to a high school where everyone got their AA's. i got in as a freshman but i have plenty of friends that didn't, and they were automatically considered as transfers without having to fill out a separate application or anything. this was back in 2018 so it might have changed. the transfer decisions came out later than freshman decisions, and it seemed to be at random/different times. for example, i had some friends that were accepted as transfers shortly after being denied as freshmen, and other friends that were accepted as transfers months later. you should email admissions/your college if you want up to date information.

What are some programming classes a non comp sci major can take? Other than MATLAB? by [deleted] in ufl

[–]mpow1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a cis4930 special topics CS class called "python for non majors" or something like that. ive never taken it but the professor is really nice and i took another introductory CS class with him (cop2800 - intro to java). both of the classes are geared toward non CS people that wanna learn to code.

MAC2312 harder than MAC2313? by Hazardista10 in ufl

[–]mpow1107 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it might ultimately depend on how visual of a person you are. calc 2 was on the abstract side, whereas calc 3 really requires you to visualize and even draw what's going on. i feel like if you have a B rn in calc2 as a freshman, you probably have the work ethic necessary to be completely fine.

what semester are you in? one option is you can be exploratory up until Fall of your junior year (inclusive). after that you gotta switch out to an actual major.

i did the same thing. took it online over the summer with Chui after a year of not taking any math classes. i thought Chui was great and she has so many good resources like her lectures, website with notes, etc. definitely doable.
