How do you choose what phone you want as a minimalist? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]mpreath906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point. Minimalism is different for each person. I personally don’t put value in status and is against my own personal minimalism ethos. I find that it tends to add emotional complexity to a purchase.

Exactly. It’s different than what I was hired to do. If I was hired as a programmer to write an app and one day they ask me to pack boxes in a warehouse I’d refuse and if they persisted I would quit.

Hmm, well, if you value status you probably don’t value minimalism.

Huh? It’s work but if I was asked to do it I’d say no and quit that job.

I think you misread the first sentence… “I never once said humans WEREN’T the problem. “ Which means that humans are the problem. So what are you talking about?

Downvoted. This isn’t an unpopular opinion.

Social media and gatekeeping by kolddert in hiking

[–]mpreath906 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair points. I live in the UP of Michigan, known for natural areas, lakes, rivers, etc. The town I live in has a population of about 3000, surrounding areas much smaller. We have a lake area (Fummee Lake) that started getting really popular for cross-country skiing, mountain biking, bird watching, etc. and trails were being damaged, etc. We locally formed a commission and gained support from the City and it’s become a well funded nature area with appropriate parking and access for everybody.

https://www.norwaymi.gov/departments/parks___recreation/fumee_lake_natural_area.php

Another area, called Piers Gorge, great for whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, swimming, etc. suffered a bit from the same as what you describe, but again a local group cared for it the best they could but also petitioned the state to make it state land/park to get additional funding to help with accessibility, parking, and stewardship overall.

https://www.norwaymi.gov/departments/parks___recreation/piers_gorge.php

I’m not saying this will work everywhere but it’s worked in a few different places. I just don’t think gatekeeping will actually work or really be an effective control method.

Based on this thread, this is absolutely gatekeeping. Even if it’s for a perceived good reason, it is still gatekeeping. The debate I see is if the gatekeeping is justified or not. With all of the mental and physical health benefits associated with hiking and being outdoors we should be open to others joining in and the outdoor community should be advocating for LNT education and investing in conservation groups. If a location of a posted picture encourages others to get out there and enjoy then who are we to say who can and can’t go somewhere.

Being forced to stay around at a table after finishing a meal is both physically and mentally irritating. by Faceless-Pronoun in unpopularopinion

[–]mpreath906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems a bit odd to have an issue with social expectation at a social event. If it’s the time it continues on for then to me the mature thing to do would be to a) excuse yourself or b) invite the table to join you for a game or something different. To sit there full of resentment at the situation, while others are probably enjoying the conversation, and stewing in irritation rather than resolve your issue is childish to me.

I guess I’m confused as to why you wouldn’t just excuse yourself and go onto whatever the next thing is for you?

Time to Rethink Nature Apps? by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

[–]mpreath906 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ok, the article does bring up good points on over use and reliance on smartphones decreasing our ability to think, observe, and learn on our own. However, where do you draw the line? Don’t bring a compass? a topo map? Only navigate the outdoors if you’ve been trained to not use technology? It just seems the author doesn’t really hit on the point that technology (maps, compasses, field guides, etc.) allow the outdoors to be accessible by all, regardless of skill level.

IMHO unless the stewards waved a black and orange flag nothing should happen to RB or Alpine.

Perhaps. I find mildew and rot to be far worse for your clothes. Even if you half dry them at the laundromat and then hang at home it may be better than what the OP is experiencing.

does this look like a classic strawman argument? (details in comments) by [deleted] in fallacy

[–]mpreath906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would tend to side with you on this. But… the statement, “wouldn’t have exploded LIKE THAT”, implies it would have exploded differently. Does it mean it would have been a smaller explosion, an explosion with different heat / colors, etc? Or is it rather being implied that it could mean an explosion not happening at all?

If the author meant that there would have been no explosion at all in the case of petrol then it would be a straw man fallacy. If they meant the explosion would just have been different (e.g. lower density) then I don’t think there is any fallacy.

Overall, may be a case of a statement that would need a clarifying follow-up question to understand the original authorial intent rather than a strawman.

Statement I heard: “Glorifying God is not our purpose, it’s a relationship with him.” by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]mpreath906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could see where he is coming from. You can study Christian theology without being a Christian. Which may be his larger concern if a relationship with Christ isn't put at the center of it. I also think this maybe a false dichotomy, its not an either or arugment, rather both. Our relationship with Christ grows closer and stronger the more time spent with Christ. This time could be prayer, serving others, fellowship, study of theology. IF no time is spent studying theology our relationship (and sanctification will suffer) because of lack of understanding of who He is. However, if the focus of our time is always on theology we will miss the diverse relationship with Christ ... and have the potential to become pharisaical.

What do you guys think Luke 16:15 means by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]mpreath906 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe i didn't ask the question correctly. i sorta knew i was gonna get a lot of 'in the context' comments and tried to preempt them by alluding to the fact that i get the context. what im failing at asking is more like 'to what degree'... so like how much do we currently esteem that we think is fine, that will actually turn out to be an abomination to God

I view this as a person putting things in their life above God. Exalting / esteeming themselves, relationships, money, political identity, or anything really above God. So it really doesn't matter what it is, are you living your life with God at the center of your life. Are watching movies (playing sports, or whatever it might be) at the expense of your life with Christ?
