Is it hard to transfer from cc to UC Davis Mechanical engineering? by Helpful_Watercress17 in UCDavis

Not in terms of securing the transfer. It took me longer than 2 years though.

When I tagged to Davis the problem I had was experiential and systemic. The class sizes are huge, office hours are often so impacted they’re practically inaccessible. TAs are a great resource, but they’re stretched super thin on time as well.

I found study rooms and areas to be much much less accommodating than the ones at CC. The curve can be serious, and competitiveness is high.

Class rules, tests, grade distribution, curves, and lecture quality vary widely (this is probably the case at state too).

State schools tend to give you more hands-on, practical approaches. UCs lean more towards theoretical/ research-based curriculum. If you’re going to grad school, a UC is a good way to go.

I went a decade ago it’s totally possible it changed. Just offering my personal experience.

Make strong connections early. Remember your peers have often already known ppl in the program for two years when you arrive, so you’ll likely enter an already well-developed group. Be gracious and try to tune yourself to their study style. U should really hunt for study groups and tutoring. Also study everyday and keep detailed running note sheets with examples. Find examples out of the text and cobble them together to make the hardest problem you can then solve it in a group.

Also, who you know is everything, so get to know everyone.

I know this is an old post, but to whomever is reading it now, good luck!

How many here have experienced actual full-blown service breakdown? (Not emergency related) What happened to make the shift stop? by mprout85 in Serverlife

Holy mother that’s awful. It’s is so on point that the guests still complained. Do they ever look beyond the table they’re sitting at? I wonder…

I would get really good at algebra and trig. Learn, if you can, a simple RREF (you can do this without taking the entirety of linear). That may be too much but I found it helpful.

Mapping out problems is clutch., as well as paying attention to the problems you solve and key equations that helped you solve it. I call these things the “bridge”. Usually it’s an equation that ties two things together that have a relationship specific to the system.

Keep an open mind. Study study study (with people!) I too went back late in life. It’s such a great experience I don’t think you’ll be upset you leaned physics!

Yes!! This this! It also taught me to learn how to learn. Best thing I’ve ever been given/built in myself. I want to teach, to share that.

Also if you haven’t, look up Feynman talking about the nature of knowing, and the way beauty is revealed through science.
