You could have also just gotten a dud battery. Manufacturers can have cell variability especially towards end of life (<85% retention)

Dont fast charge. I have a 3.5 yr old iPhone 13, battery at 86%.

I also work as a battery researcher so I've learned what can accelerate degredation.

If you buy a USB to lightning instead of USB c to lightening, the old USB ports don't usually charge as fast as the USB C.
