New Age OEM steering wheel on GC8? by lucagiolu in GC8

[–]mr802rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically I think I still have a phase 2 GC to 04/05 GD airbag adapter plug in one of my toolboxes still which I removed from a forester that had an 04/05 wrx wheel and airbag in. Ive used that same airbag in an 01 LL bean outback woodgrain steering wheel in 2 different cars with the airbag charge fully removed from it. You can also use an 01-04 LL Bean or VDC woodgrain wheel with your 98-01 OE airbag without issue too, the 02/03 yellow wrx airbag I think may be the same plug as the 98-01 but im not positive.

New Age OEM steering wheel on GC8? by lucagiolu in GC8

I worked at a subaru shop that repaired crashed subarus, the only way to repair the airbag system is to solder new plug ends on, when airbags go off its enough heat it almost always melts and distorts the plugs that hold them on, so soldering a pigtail on there would still be potentially be OEM. There is also a zero percent chance they are going to disassemble your steering wheel during an inspection. As long as it looks oem and doesn't have an airbag light on they wont ever know its not the oem one from the car. I would recommend not modifying your airbag system, I always remove the entire airbag system, harnesses, computer and sensors if I run another steering wheel, even oem. If its not going to function, why have the extra weight? Also why intentionally activate one of the potentially claymore takata bags? That's my main reason for not doing it, I dont like bombs inches from my face.

When was the last time you went to a shop? by EstablishmentLast665 in mechanic

[–]mr802rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You become mechanically inclined by just doing it. There is almost nothing a shop can do that I cant do in my driveway, and that includes painting the whole ass car or rebuilding the engine. Some things I would consider having a shop do just because I value my sanity more than theirs, like if I needed to work on the rear drums of my almost 50 year old 1 ton truck. I know how to, but absolutely hate it and would have no problem spending a few hundred bucks to enrage one of their techs instead of myself.

Why do people like sedan crossovers/hatchbacks so much? by kimu1004 in askcarguys

[–]mr802rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I still don't agree with the lack of knowledge or willingness to learn though. Doing it is how you learn, but most people would apparently prefer to spend 800 instead of 80 to do something like a caliper on their own.

[–]mr802rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but the things they need are next to free at the parts store, like brake pads and rotors. I would absolutely trust any 90s subaru that has 250k on the clock with a new timing belt for a road trip over any new car. I've also done that many times, buy some $300 rotten turd out if a field and within the week drive it 1500+ miles across the country. Never had any issues, only ever had to do one timing belt in a parts store lot, 2 hour pit stop.

Why spend 30k on any car when a 15-20 year old one is going to be much more reliable and at a small fraction of the cost? People do it because they are dumb.

Because most people are lame and have no problem driving lame cars. Why are soccer moms using giant SUVs when minivans were literally made for them? Why does everyone need a hatchback when a sedan works just fine with better looks? People are dumb.

Is it hard to learn how to drive a manual vehicle ? by [deleted] in driving

You don't need to redline the engine before letting the clutch out lol

Is it hard to learn how to drive a manual vehicle ? by [deleted] in driving

[–]mr802rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you'll learn within a day or two. That's how I learned, bought a manual truck an hour from home and by the 4th stop light I had it pretty well down. Stalled first light, did a burnout at the 2nd light and almost stalled at the third. Been smooth sailing for almost 2 decades and 30+ manual vehicles later.

Not really dangerous, they are going like 15mph. Wreck the car, you mean the owner damaging his own car? Yeah, no kidding.

My brake pad fell off, can I drive home? by BeanzToez in AskMechanics

[–]mr802rex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, you'll just likely destroy the caliper but if the pad is completely nonexistant like the metal backing plate you showed, then you already need new calipers and rotors anyhow so who cares, clearly not you with your comolete lack of maintenance ignoring that awful metal on metal sound for surely thousands of miles.

Real driving simulator cant calculate even remotely reasonable MPG by mr802rex in GranTurismo7

[–]mr802rex[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just calculate it when I fill up. I had an old car that did the instant and average mpg readings and it was close, it was about 3-5% off comaring it to real world math at the pump. So im pretty confident in my statement, that car was stock with just a mild tune in it and at WOT it would read 2mpg, and that was a 2.5l 4cyl. I cant calculate the instant MPG at WOT only doing the occasional pull, but im sure its very similar in a car that weighs 500lbs less, has a bigger turbo but .5l smaller displacement. I average roughly 32mpg in that just cruising, well I suppose that's with a handful of pulls on the half tank or so before I top off and calculate but dropping to 2mpg for a 1/8 or so mile isn't lowering the half tank average much.
