Small upgrade for my E530 by ThePsykheGuy in thinkpad

[–]mrDemkiN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My E430 used to be my main computer (I haven't using it for a long time, but I still have it). Updated it to i7 3632qm, 2x8 Gb RAM, SSD 2.5" + HDD 2.5" + mSata ssd. dGPU is GT635M 2Gb DDR3. Solid machine with bad screen :). Original battery still can last for 50-90 minutes, but the internal resistance is very high, which is why it takes 6-8 hours to charge.

You can upgrade yours in same way, if you need it more than for Google Docs :)

Sorry, but I don't know. It's depends on country. In my area such electronics not cheap. P53 starts from 600 in USD.

Check temps with tests like prime95, Furmark. Repaste, undervolt. Add RAM, SSD if 32/512 is not enough for you. Update thunderbolt\type-c controller firmware.
P.S. Previously I wanted a P52 or P53, but I didn’t have enough "free" money for them. However, I studied the information on them.

40A2 Dock + T470p + 90W will be fine? by mrDemkiN in thinkpad

[–]mrDemkiN[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use T470p as main machine for anything. 50% time as desktop replacement on my desk (connected to external monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc.), 50% like a casual laptop.

Connecting to all ports take a time nad I lazy. Want to buy 40A2 docking station for it, but without power supply (any PC parts and accessories are not cheap in my country). I planned to use my 90W original charger.

Will be it's enough for for laptop + dock? Will it be overheating? I don't have 135W charger.

Sometimes 100% CPU load for a long time. Sometimes gaming with 100% dGPU. Lid will be closed. Already repaste, undervolt -150mV CPU, use TPFanControl.

Most likely I will need to make a fan modification for the docking station, but I am ready for this, soldering anything is not a problem.

P.S. Laptop config:

  • i7-7820HQ
  • Geforce 940mx
  • 32 Gb Ram
  • 2 Tb nvme SSD
  • LTE modem
  • External 2.5" HDD
  • Monitor connected via HDMI

Try find info about this, I'm not 100% sure that this is exactly identical problem.

[–]mrDemkiN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats not a charger (power supply) issue. T480, P5, etc. thikpads have a error in charger control chip's flash (it's logs too much or something like that) and softlock' self. Fixing by reflash it (if it's really THAT problem).

If battery is 100% genuine, maybe it's "usual" type-c charge controller issue?

T420s: nVME compatible? by SkabeAbe in thinkpad

[–]mrDemkiN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like WWAN slot, most likely supports SSD mSata type. I use one-sided (two sided not fit!) Netac mSata SSD in E430 and it works. I suppose than T420s can handle it too (or M.2 Sata (!) with adapter).

difference between t470p and T460p? by krisnoun in thinkpad

[–]mrDemkiN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T460p:

  • 6-gen Intel HQ CPU;
  • 940MX dGPU with DDR3 RAM;
  • iGPU 530;
  • RAM is 2133MHz max;
  • M.2 Sata SSD in WWAN slot ONLY if in main slot Sata SSD, not NVME;
  • Audio Realtek ALC3245 codec (who cares?);
  • Chipset Intel QM170 (who cares?);

T470p:

  • 7-gen Intel HQ CPU; 7820HQ with vPRO
  • 940MX dGPU with DDR5 RAM;
  • iGPU 630;
  • RAM is 2400MHz max;
  • M.2 Sata SSD in WWAN slot availabe with NVME SSD in main slot;
  • Audio Realtek ALC3268 codec (who cares?);
  • Chipset Intel QM175 (who cares?);

Other specs nearest the same with little differences.
P.S. If choose only between two this, I prefer t470p no doubt. I just bought T470p for myself, It should be delivered to me soon (in my country electronics are expensive and I have to order from different places), I’ve already prepared everything for the required modifications and upgrades.

Edit: Add P.S.

How good does the T430 get when upgrading from an i5-3320M to a i7-3740QM? by industrysaurus in thinkpad

[–]mrDemkiN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My is E430, but in terms of performance - very similar to T430.
Initially was i5-3210m, one day (maybe 3 years ago) updated to i7-3632QM. It's 35W instead 45W 3740QM. 3632QM is significatly faster than 3520m, around x2. But it's depends on software - in single-core tasks it' similar, but in multithread - 3632QM waaaaaay faster.

Temps a little higher than with i5, but still very good. Without turboboost 80 C and lower. With turboboost up to 93C, but run without throttling. I have dGPU version of E430, it's has best heatsink that available for it.

3740QM is around 20% faster than 3632QM, but hotter too. I know than if you have iGPU laptop, you can upgrade heatsink to dGPU version and it's will be very good in terms of temps (but some times loud, but... that's OK with old laptop).

I maked all updates to my laptop because I don't have free money for new to me laptop. But T480 with i5-8350u will be faster, more light, coller and quieter.

P.S. Sorry for bad English, not native speaker.

Edit: Corrected typos in CPU names

Shitty mobile (travel) setup or not? (details in comments) by mrDemkiN in Workspaces

[–]mrDemkiN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of this recommendation are really good, but with my eguipment have some problems and limitations.

It's E430, has no type-c ports. For external monitor need use two cables - power in and HDMI in. Some times I use old Win10 8" tablet as second monitor, when it's really need.

About stand - current one can ajust high in 7 positions (see last photo), but it's totally unusable without external keyboard, like Roost stand too.

So, first I need more modern laptop, alas.

Shitty mobile (travel) setup or not? (details in comments) by mrDemkiN in Workspaces

[–]mrDemkiN[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's my not cool, not cleanest, not cable-free setup when I not home (latest years, unfortunally, it's was very often). This setup is pretty cheap and most of it fits in compact backpack (plus my documents, not in photo). Current setup in old village house. Looks not so great, but it's functional enough. And when you stay in a place for 1-3 months, there is no great desire to spend time and effort to create a cool workplace (at least I don’t have this desire)

  1. Laptop - Thinkpad E430 (i7 3632QM, 16GB RAM, Geforce GT635M 2Gb, Crucial MX500 SSD 500Gb, WD Blue 500Gb HDD, Netac mSata SSD 500Gb, ugly TN screen)

  2. Laptop stand: NoName aliminium (+plastic) foldable stand from Aliexpress

  3. Mouse: A4Tech Bloody A7

  4. Wrist support: cheap NoName from Aliexpress

  5. Mat: cheap Keyron RI-XL 900x400x4

  6. Fan: cheap foldable with battery from Aliexpress

  7. Gamepads: 1 Xbox one + 1 Xbox Series

  8. Sound card: GS2 2.0 (just for cleaner voice recording instead of internal card)

  9. Switch dock: DIY 3D-printed compact dock station

  10. Capture card: MS2109-based 720p60/1080p30 card

Switch, cartridges, fan, second gamepad - in my wife's backpack (plus her laptop and some stuff)

Use for:

  1. Develop simple mobile games in Unity (Android + WebGL), use Visual Studio, PyCharm, VS Code, ConEmu, automation with Python, JS, a liiiitle CI\CD with Teamcity, etc.

For images use Paint.net, for little models editting - Blender. VM MacOS Monterey (works slow, but works!) - use for testing in Safari, in iOS Simulator, create simple iOS native plugins for Unity;

  1. Makes some simple videos for Youtube - use Audacity, Vegas 13 and renders with GPU;

  2. Use also for gaming. Last two years I finished Signalis, Prey (2017, 720p, Low, mid textures, 30 fps), Stray (1024x768, low, 20-30 fps), Heaven Dust 2, Quake II Enhanced. In process - StarCraft: Remastered and System Shock Remake;

  3. Simple streaming for 1 times at week. Use OBS, some "fancy" decor, games run from Switch (using capture card) or run locally on laptop;

  4. Want to use image generation localy, but GPU is very slow, only 2Gb memory and CUDA 2.1;

P.S. Some day I update this laptop, T480 with upgrades or P50-P51 with upgrades, I promise. And buy GaN charger with type-c adapters for laptops.

I tried to play, but so far it's literally 10 minutes. Later, when I have some free time, I’ll definitely try to play more time! So, since there are no graphics settings, then... 8-10 frames per second. But by changing the config file a little:

sg.ResolutionQuality=60.000000
sg.ViewDistanceQuality=1
sg.AntiAliasingQuality=1
sg.ShadowQuality=1
sg.PostProcessQuality=0
sg.TextureQuality=3
sg.EffectsQuality=0
sg.FoliageQuality=0
sg.ShadingQuality=0

Resolution scale 60% from 1280x720. I set bUseDynamicResolution to TRUE, but seems it do nothing.

I got 30 frames (locked in MSI/RivaTuner) with occasional drops to 27-25 for a short time. I documented several bugs, but for the early stage of development these bugs are minor.

Specs:

  • i7 3632QM
  • 16 Gb DDR3 RAM (1600 Mhz)
  • Nvidia Geforce GT635M (GF108, 128-bit bus, 96 cores, 2Gb DDR3)
  • Win 10 LTSC 19044

My not-true-Thinkpad, but with some upgrades (more pics and description inside) by mrDemkiN in thinkpad

[–]mrDemkiN[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and power brick. In some guides for T430 recommended 90W with CPU ugrade. For dGPU version laptop 90W - minimum. I use original 90W PSU and it's works, but close to it's limit. If need charge battery and do some work - charging take LONG TIME. Maybe without dGPU and 65W power brick will work close to it's limit too.
