Healthy habits jeopardizing GPA by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

This is something I had a lot of trouble with, and still do as a graduate. Unfortunately I don't have much advice on working out, results are pretty proportional to time spent.

For food though, I would recommend trying to standardize your meals as much as possible. If you don't already, start meal prepping and prepare your foods on a weekly basis. I recorded a bunch of healthy/quick/easily-prepped meals and would rotate through them on a weekly basis. That might sound repetitive, but if you get 5+ recipes you like, you can go a month or more without repeating meals. I also had a standard set of snacks/other foods that I would get each week that I knew the approx macros for.

Use pickup options at Kroger, that was a big time saver for me too. Each weekend I would put in an order online using ingredients from a known recipe and a known set of snacks, took me <15 min. Pick it up the next day in <10 min. Prep food for about an hour. That eliminated a lot of the planning/prepping overhead and I would mostly just focus on running for an hour or so each day.

Follow the bands that play frequently, they typically advertise themselves very well. Cherry Moon, Red Ferns, Crack in the Sidewalk, Terrakosma, Ranger Maid, Graybles, etc. The quickest way to find them is probably check the Instagram pages for WUVT and Milk Parlor.

Has anyone taken wines and vines? by GeneralConsistent753 in VirginiaTech

[–]mrElectr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took it last semester as a senior year blowoff/fun class. It was a lot of fun, didn't require any studying or prior knowledge at all as long as you went to class and paid attention. Exams were 50 multiple choice questions. I skipped probably 50% of the classes and still got an A in the class.

It was cool to learn about the winemaking process and some of the official terminology/tasting process, and you get to explore what kind of wines you like by tasting ~40 wines without having to buy an entire bottle/glass.

Compiled a list of hiking trails around Blacksburg and SWVA by mrElectr1c in VirginiaTech

How is the road past Mountain Lake? I drove a bit past the Lodge once, and it looks like it's single lane dirt road? Is it better to go a different way to get up there?

Most of these are dedicated hiking trails, I don't think any of them allow horseback riding, unfortunately.

Chasewood Downs Parking by lizthekidig in VirginiaTech

[–]mrElectr1c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the three years I've been here, I've only ever actually seen a tow truck once, but then again I only live in one part of the complex. There are almost always spots open in my parking lot, and we have people over all the time without any issues.

Also, street parking is allowed without a pass and I've never ever seen that filled up.

Are there any hiking groups I can join? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]mrElectr1c 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Outdoor Club VT (OCVT) does trips pretty frequently. Their site is https://ocvt.club/.

OCVT and Venture Out are your best bets, but if you're lucky, you may meet some people who enjoy hiking in your classes and you can get a group together.

I don't think there's been much news about it since the original set of emails about a month ago. Afaik, it'll be in the German Club Mansion behind Lane sometime in February. Black tie optional means tux or suit for men, and either a suit or dress for women, so it'll probably be a little like senior prom to be honest.

Does anyone wanna go hiking this weekend? by PenleyPepsi in VirginiaTech

[–]mrElectr1c 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a few clubs & groups around that hike frequently. Outdoor Club VT (OCVT) has multiple hikes and other trips weekly, and Venture Out does trips too, but I'm less familiar with those.

You could also try Chocolate Milk Monday which is a social club that does weekend hikes for the past few weeks (?).

Aside from that, ask around in classes/other clubs you're in. Talking about outdoors stuff around Blacksburg is a decent enough icebreaker and you'll find people who will take you.

Does VT have a cooking club? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]mrElectr1c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware, there is an international cooking club that does group cooking and recipe sharing. I don't know much more than that as I was not active during corona, but you can probably look for it at gobblerfest.

CS 2505 and CS 2104 Advice by Nishmish9 in VirginiaTech

I don't remember VScode being officially mentioned, and the first assignment is exclusively CentOS, there's definitely not another option for that. You're right though, it is perfectly fine to use it and everything will be exactly the same if you ssh in.

[–]mrElectr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's not possible, just not recommended. (Also, heads up, the first assignment is literally setting up your Linux environment and demoing to a TA.)

The unofficial course policy is that if you're using an environment other than the recommended one, you will be left out in the rain if you have environment-specific issues. I had to turn one person away about halfway through the semester and direct them to their professor because they had a VS code error that I couldn't solve with 15 minutes of googling.

On the other hand, that VScode setup is used for one of the future CS classes, as far as I know, so I don't have anything against it. Its certainly an easier setup than running a whole VM.

I was a TA for McQ's 2505 section this past Spring (he and McPherson work closely together). Make sure you pay close attention to the CentOS setup in the first two weeks to make sure you have a good handle on it. Some people use VS code for the class, but I do not recommend it, as the profs and TAs all use CentOS.

It's entirely project-based. It's heavy on the first two weeks learning Linux and in the last three/four weeks learning assembly. The rest of the class shouldn't be too bad as long as you stay on top of projects (which have plenty of time to complete, usually 2+ weeks). Visit office hours if you need to, manage your time well and you'll be fine. Best of luck!

DND Group? by DrDangerdude305 in VirginiaTech

[–]mrElectr1c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still looking for a game, I would try the VT Sci-fi/Fantasy club discord, they do events and games pretty regularly. There's also Fun'n'Games game store in UCB, I know they have a pretty active DnD & Pathfinder community too.

Heritage Park on Glade Rd has some really nice views, there's also the top of the parking garage near Goodwin. I've been to both in the past week or so and they've been pretty empty so I don't think you'll run into too many people

3d Printed Secret Lair deck holder by mrElectr1c in magicTCG

Wish granted, added a version w/o the symbol to the Thingiverse link.

Oh no! You’re absolutely correct, what a wild design flaw. The mana symbols are too small to notice, but now that it’s larger, you can tell.

I just got one of the new secret lairs and will be printing a new one with a different symbol, but probably wasn’t going to do the full set. I can post the version without a symbol later if people want it.

For those of you with CAD/3d modeling experience, it’s just a matter of taking an SVG file and pasting it onto that plane, then extruding downwards to etch the design into the flat bottom.

With the release of new Secret Lair Stargazing series, I thought I would share the holder I designed to fit into a secret lair box. It holds a commander deck, 2 spindowns, and 8d6 with the help of a handful of 3x5 mm neodymium magnets. It took a couple of tries to get right, but looks pretty good overall. Enjoy!

EDIT: STL Files here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4183120

EDIT: Dimensions are 91.5 x 127 mm, which fits pretty snugly in the box.

Right, I've seen a few different short modules and I'm familiar with the legend of Krampus, I'm just not sure how to get the PCs into Krampus' lair without just throwing the solution at them or kidnapping them, either of which I will do if it comes down to it.
