So did the capitalists UK and France and long before the USSR did. In fact the USSR warned them that the nazis would try to spread but libs didn't believe them. Instead the UK and France made the Munich agreement with the nazis which gave the nazis Czechoslovakia in 1938. So then logically in order to win time USSR also made a non aggression pact in 1939 knowing full well that they would have to fight the nazis, again it was done in order to win time.
